Factors propelling Las Vegas into the #5 spot included &#8220;nightlife options per capita&#8221; (#1), &#8220;music venues per capita&#8221; (#1) and, not to be gainsaid, &#8220;legality of fireworks&#8221; (#1). Vegas was #4 in restaurants and #6 when it came to &#8220;Luxury Shopping &amp; Gourmet-Food Stores per Capita.&#8221; It scored badly (#41) on ticket affordability and an abysmal #55 for walkability. Look on the bright side, Las Vegas: <strong>Reno<\/strong> was #52 overall and <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> didn&#8217;t even make the list.<\/p>\n<p>* Faced with disappointing early numbers at <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong>, the casino is reaching out to <!--more--><strong>Connecticut<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/business\/hc-biz-mgm-springfield-buses-20181206-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with economy-priced bus service<\/a>. The ride <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mgmspringfield.com\/en\/casino\/bus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will cost you $20<\/a> but you get $20 in free play and $10 in comped food once you arrive. Frankly, this sounds remarkably like the kind of marketing ploy Atlantic City casinos use to lure day trippers. MGM is saturating the <strong>Hartford<\/strong> area &#8212; right where <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> and <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> casino plan to build a satellite casino of their own. (MGM is also busing in customers from <strong>New Hampshire<\/strong> and elsewhere in <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>.) The two big tribal casinos also offer discounted bus service but, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/mohegan-adds-paramount-park-flags-delay-for-korea-resort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">faced with declining profitability<\/a>, it remains to be seen whether they up the marketing ante.<\/p>\n<p>* We don&#8217;t know the magic formula for winning a casino license in <strong>Japan<\/strong> but preparing to flood the job market with 20,000 migrant workers may be one way to do it. <strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>CEO <strong>Lawrence Ho<\/strong> says he did the same thing in the <strong>Philippines<\/strong> and it&#8217;s a necessary way of getting expertise on the ground. Furthermore,\u00a0\u201cAs part of Prime Minister [<strong>Shinzo<\/strong>] <strong>Abe<\/strong>\u2019s reform packages, labor immigration is a key one,\u201d Ho told a Japanese newspaper.\u00a0\u201cThe bulk of employees will be Japanese,&#8221; somewhere down the road,\u00a0\u201cBut at the same time it is unrealistic to say so from the beginning, as the industry does not still exist in Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A declining birth rate in Japan has left the country with a superannuated work force. However, opposition-party politicians are sure to react badly to Ho&#8217;s planned wave of immigration. Abe seeks to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Shinzo-Abe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Shinzo-Abe.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Shinzo-Abe-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Business\/Companies\/Melco-counts-on-Japan-s-immigration-bill-to-meet-casino-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bring in\u00a0345,150 foreigners<\/a> over the next five years. Those classified as trainees would be indentured to their employer for three years. So, Japanese hoping to work for Melco had better take a number. At the moment, Nipponese companies other than <strong>Sega Sammy<\/strong> are keeping their powder dry about casino bids. Opined <strong>Takashi Kiso<\/strong>, CEO of the <strong>International Casino Institute<\/strong>, \u201cCasino has [the] reputational risks of gambling addiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0Like the <strong>Dallas Cowboys<\/strong>, the <strong>Seattle Seahawks<\/strong> are partnering with a tribal casino as a sponsor. The\u00a0<strong>Snoqualmie Casino<\/strong> has been tapped as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardplayer.com\/poker-news\/23459-nfl-s-seattle-seahawks-find-partner-in-snoqualmie-casino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">the Seahawks&#8217; go-to casino<\/a>.
