Indeed, <strong>White House<\/strong> retaliation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/11\/us\/politics\/trump-china-trade.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">may already be teed up<\/a> like a golf ball at <strong>Mar-A-Lago<\/strong>. According to <em>HotelsMag.com<\/em>, &#8220;<strong>Marriott International<\/strong> is now facing the possibility that the [2014-18] hack <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-23082\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Xi-Jinping-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Xi-Jinping-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Xi-Jinping-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Xi-Jinping-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Xi-Jinping-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Xi-Jinping.jpg 1096w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>may be attributed to Chinese who potentially may have been using the data for the country\u2019s government intelligence services and the military, according to multiple sources.&#8221; Passport data was among the information plundered during the long-undiscovered hack. Investigation of the hacking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/12\/06\/clues-in-marriott-hack-are-said-to-implicate-china.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has found similarities<\/a> to other Chinese data raids, although <strong>China<\/strong> may have been only one of several culprits.\u00a0&#8220;Think of the depth of knowledge they could now have about <!--more-->travel habits or who happened to be in a certain city at the same time as another person,&#8221; said former <strong>FBI<\/strong> official <strong>Robert Anderson<\/strong>.\u00a0&#8220;It fits with how the Chinese intelligence services think about things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One clue pointing to a government attacker is the amount of time the intruders were working quietly inside the network,&#8221; added <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6566\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Donald-Trump-Apprentice-2011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Donald-Trump-Apprentice-2011.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Donald-Trump-Apprentice-2011-150x131.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><strong>Michael Sussmann<\/strong>, late of the <strong>Department of Justice<\/strong>&#8216;s cyber-security branch.\u00a0&#8220;Patience is a virtue for spies, but not for criminals trying to steal credit card numbers.&#8221; Federal options for payback include &#8221;\u00a0an executive order intended to make it harder for Chinese companies to obtain critical components for telecommunications equipment,&#8221; according to the <em>New York Times<\/em>. Why Starwood? &#8220;<strong>Marriott<\/strong> is the top hotel provider for American government and military personnel,&#8221; reports the <em>NYT<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barack Obama<\/strong> thought he&#8217;d turned off the data spigot in a 2015 agreement with President Xi but the Chinese have kept on merrily siphoning information. According to former Obama advisor <strong>Lisa Monaco<\/strong> &#8220;passport information would be particularly valuable in <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3953\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/obama_-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/obama_-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/obama_-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/obama_.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>tracking who is crossing borders and what they look like, among other key data.&#8221; Part of the incentive to do so is to identify American spies &#8212; or perhaps to turn vulnerable citizens into Chinese intelligence assets. To add insult to injury, Marriott is refusing to foot the bill for passport replacement, preferring to sit unconcerned atop its mountain of tainted profits. Ironically, the Chinese would be stealing data from themselves had the Obama administration not discouraged\u00a0<strong>Anbang Insurance Group<\/strong> from purchasing Starwood in 2015. While we hope Trump exacts a pound of flesh from Xi, Starwood and eventual buyer Marriott are ultimately at fault for leaving valuable data vulnerable to theft for five years.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a02019 is looking much better for <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> than 2018, according to <strong>Credit Suisse<\/strong> analyst <strong>Cameron McKnight<\/strong>. This is due to an 11% upsurge in convention bookings for the first half of the year. &#8220;Our forward convention data is strongly correlated with Strip RevPAR growth,&#8221; McKnight writes. So expect to pay more for a hotel room next year. Success comes at a price.<\/p>\n<p>Other indicators favor Las Vegas, including the rate of people quitting their job, up to 5% in October.
