{"id":2319,"date":"2010-02-22T09:42:07","date_gmt":"2010-02-22T17:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=2319"},"modified":"2010-03-03T13:51:59","modified_gmt":"2010-03-03T21:51:59","slug":"viva-elvis-its-here-and","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/viva-elvis-its-here-and\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Viva Elvis&#8217;: It&#8217;s here and &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lasvegascitylife.com\/cityblog\/2010\/02\/20\/viva-elvis-review-earache-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\">one giant, steaming heap<\/a> of <em>merde<\/em>. <strong>Cirque du Soleil<\/strong> is clearly just doing this one for the bread and it shows. <em>Desert Companion<\/em> Editor <strong>Andrew Kiraly<\/strong>&#8216;s baneful summation of Cirque&#8217;s <em>oeuvre<\/em> as &#8220;arid pretension&#8221; never seemed more appropriate. Congratulations, <strong>CityCenter<\/strong>, you now have the theatrical counterpart to <strong>Crystals<\/strong>: pompous, overpriced, dysfunctional and largely empty. MGM Mirage CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> is to be congratulated for sticking with <em>The Lion King<\/em> when Cirque coveted the <strong>Mandalay Bay<\/strong> showroom. Now, if only he&#8217;d go one step farther and rethink MGM&#8217;s exclusive &#8220;content provider&#8221; relationship with his clown-shoed business partners from <strong>Montreal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>More interesting than the show itself is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lvrj.com\/news\/priscilla-testy-over-redhead-in-_viva_-84839182.html\" target=\"_blank\">the degree of veto power<\/a> that <strong>Priscilla Presley<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/blogs\/kats-report\/2010\/feb\/20\/history-piece-cirques-viva-elvis-bears-some-explan\/\" target=\"_blank\">exercised over the stage presentation<\/a>. At least there are no contortionists<!--more--> in <em>Viva Elvis<\/em>. I seriously doubt the Widow Presley would have been down with that staple of Cirque <em>grotesquerie<\/em> and for that I am thankful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>P.S.:<\/strong> The after-party was terrific, not only in terms of the food but the very imaginative set spun by the DJs (including a <strong>Shirley Bassey<\/strong> cover of <strong>The Doors<\/strong>&#8216; &#8220;Light My Fire&#8221; that made it sound like the ultimate <strong>James Bond<\/strong> title track). Celeb-spotters could at least console themselves with the sight of <strong>Andrew Dice Clay<\/strong> eschewing a VIP booth in favor of the <em>hoi polloi<\/em> on the dance floor. <strong>Aria<\/strong> should present the after-party twice nightly and scrap <em>Viva Elvis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>P.P.S.:<\/strong> Barring proof to the contrary, I&#8217;m calling B.S. on the &#8220;tripped an alarm&#8221; story for why the opening number of <em>Viva Elvis<\/em> ground to an ignominious halt. Something was clearly amiss during the song &#8212; it later turned out that the ginormous blue suede shoe missed its cue &#8212; and then the sound system abruptly cut out, while a suddenly enfeebled band played on a bit more. That there was <em>some<\/em> huge snafu was obvious but the official explanation didn&#8217;t jibe with what we heard and saw.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; it&#8217;s one giant, steaming heap of merde.
