That&#8217;s what <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> and <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/calvinayre.com\/2019\/01\/31\/casino\/connecticut-tribal-casino-jv-gets-name\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are going to call<\/a> their joint venture in <strong>East Windsor<\/strong>, <strong>Connecticut<\/strong>. The duo has already spent $14 million on the $300 million project. Both of the tribes involved are <a href=\"https:\/\/calvinayre.com\/2019\/01\/31\/casino\/connecticut-tribal-casino-jv-gets-name\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not concealing their ire<\/a> at <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21897\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/East-Windsor-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/East-Windsor-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/East-Windsor-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/East-Windsor.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>the <strong>Department of the Interior<\/strong> for not signing off on the project, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/business\/2019\/01\/tribal-winds-east-windsor-casino-project-has-new-name-new-push-from-foxwoods-and-mohegan-to-compete-with-mgm-springfield.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">is pending\u00a0approval<\/a> by the state Lege, or at <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>, which they feel has laid a heavy thumb on the scales of justice. \u201cHeavy lobbying by MGM in the last 48 hours prior to those approvals is what halted it,\u201d says <strong>Mohegan Tribal Nation<\/strong> Chairman <strong>Kevin Brown<\/strong>. (Compact changes with Mohegans have been approved, those with the <strong>Mashantucket Pequots<\/strong> not.) This has prompted area lawmakers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalinquirer.com\/connecticut_and_region\/tribes-tout-ew-casino-jobs-cash-new-name\/article_f05e836c-23e4-11e9-9db6-c31e35ee5e4b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">push for a state-level workaround<\/a>. The quickest path would be to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpost.com\/local\/article\/Proposed-East-Windsor-casino-to-be-named-Tribal-13568074.php#photo-16839895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amend the 2017 law<\/a>\u00a0allowing Tribal Wind<a href=\"https:\/\/tribalwinds.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">s<\/a> by removing its mandate for federal approval. Former Interior secretary <strong>Ryan Zinke<\/strong> faces scrutiny over the possibility that he may have lied to investigators when asked about Tribal Winds. In the meantime, state lawmakers are tempted to revisited the Nutmeg State&#8217;s tribal compacts, swayed by MGM&#8217;s promise of billions in investment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpost.com\/local\/article\/Will-Bridgeport-casino-plan-finally-come-up-a-13581993.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">should a casino concession<\/a> in <strong>Bridgeport<\/strong> be approved. MGM&#8217;s pitch has lost some of its persuasiveness as competition from <!--more--><strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong> has been less than feared. The latter is also badly lagging its gaming-revenue projections, having only accrued $101.5 million of its Year One revenue target of $412 million. Tribal Winds is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardplayer.com\/poker-news\/23601-u-s-department-of-interior-stands-between-connecticut-and-its-third-casino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">projected to garner\u00a0$75 million<\/a> annually for the state.\u00a0\u201cThey&#8217;re talking about thousands of jobs and certainly more revenue for the state, so we are pleased about that and glad we are being talked about,&#8221; said East Windsor First Selectman <strong>Bob Maynard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Solons were bracing themselves for a 25% drop in Connecticut casino revenue, but only a 9% slippage has materialized. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, meanwhile, have missed their start date by several months and, not having submitted an application to build, <a href=\"https:\/\/westfaironline.com\/110661\/tribal-winds-is-the-new-name-for-stalled-east-windsor-casino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">will lose one more<\/a>, at least. A local lawsuit has been filed, challenging the project. In the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-19480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>meantime,\u00a0<strong>Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council<\/strong> Chairman <strong>Rodney Butler<\/strong> is telling lawmakers that litigation from MGM &#8212; &#8220;our friends from the north&#8221; &#8212; is inevitable, lest the Lege open upon competitive bidding from fear of the lion&#8217;s wrath. MGM was not shy about repeating its sales pitch through the media. The tribes also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fox61.com\/2019\/01\/30\/mmct-officials-launch-renewed-push-for-tribal-winds-casino-in-east-windsor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">got little comfort<\/a> from Bridgeport state Sen. <strong>Dennis Bailey<\/strong>, who said, \u201cI don\u2019t know if that will still stand. We are looking at those things to make sure that whatever was done in the past is transparent and open and creates the progress that we want.&#8221; State Rep. <strong>Joe Verrengia<\/strong> described the tribal\/MGM situation as a stalemate under which <a href=\"https:\/\/we-ha.com\/tribes-say-east-windsor-casino-is-viable-and-necessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gaming expansion could not proceed<\/a>. Gov. <strong>Ned Lamont<\/strong> has also characterized\u00a0himself as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcconnecticut.com\/news\/local\/Mashantucket-Pequot-Mohegan-Tribes-Announce-Name-of-New-East-Windsor-Casino-504968831.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">being open to the MGM pitch<\/a>. The minimal impact of MGM Springfield is dulling the urgency of the East Windsor issue, too. The tribes&#8217; best ally for the moment is state Sen. <strong>Cathy Osten<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theday.com\/article\/20190128\/BIZ02\/190129430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">who is carrying the ball<\/a> for amendment of the 2017 legislation. At present, it looks like she&#8217;s got a tough row to hoe.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0Chances of a recession next year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelbusiness.com\/hb-on-the-scene-industry-outlook-on-2019-is-more-of-the-same\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">stand at 40%<\/a>. That&#8217;s among the takeaways from the latest <strong>American Leisure Industry Summit<\/strong>. Other opinions aired included &#8220;There are a lot of antiquated products in the market today.&#8221; We hope casino companies with risky-dink resorts get that memo.<\/p>\n<p>* For the first time since 2004, all <strong>Nevada<\/strong> casino markets saw revenue increases last year. The Silver State <a href=\"https:\/\/vegasinc.lasvegassun.com\/business\/gaming\/2019\/jan\/31\/nevada-casinos-win-119b-in-2018-up-from-2017-reven\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">generated $11.9 billion<\/a> in gambling revenue. That&#8217;s 3% better than <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7868\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/AC-slots-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/AC-slots-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/AC-slots-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/AC-slots.jpeg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>2017 and 65% driven by slot machines. The all-time high-water mark is 2007&#8217;s $12.8 billion. That&#8217;s just before the tide went out, leaving the industry high and dry for several years. &#8220;We are only 7.2 percent below the peak right now. That&#8217;s the closest we&#8217;ve been since the recession,&#8221; said the <strong>Nevada Gaming Control Board<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Michael Lawton<\/strong>. That reliable barometer of fiscal health, <strong>Wendover<\/strong>, was up 6.5% (to $201 million). The <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> was relatively quiet, rising only 2% but sports books had a record take &#8212; $5 billion of handle, of which the house kept $301 million. Customers were also spending more freely, as the near-record numbers were achieved in a year that saw flat visitation levels.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0<strong>Macao<\/strong> got 2019 off to a downward start, off 5%. This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/macau-casino-ggr-down-5pct-in-january-govt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was not unexpected<\/a>, given the 14% growth levels seen last year &#8212; 36% in January of last year.\u00a0\u201cWe are encouraged by the January results and view the market as being more robust than it gets credit for, especially given the [earlier] timing of Chinese New Year this year,\u201d said <strong>Union Gaming Group<\/strong> analyst <strong>Grant Govertsen<\/strong>. Although the holiday falls on Feb. 5, it is credited with creating some anticipatory play in Macao. The numbers were also taken to mean that the effects of the smoking ban in Macanese casinos have been less deleterious than anticipated.
