Only the hasty re-signing of <em>Xtreme Magic<\/em> left the Trop with a show in the house. Over time, Butera&#8217;s people added a slew of second- and third-tier acts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lvrj.com\/neon\/construction--may-keep-tourists-away-61022567.html\">Too much<\/a>,&#8221; said some. Those &#8220;some&#8221; would appear to include new CEO <strong>Alex Yemenidjian<\/strong>. Virtually unpublicized <strong>Beatles<\/strong> tribute act <em>Penny Lane<\/em>? Gone. Impressionist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/vacationplanner-showdetail.cfm?ShowID=498\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>Rich Natole<\/strong><\/a>? Going soon. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/vacationplanner-showdetail.cfm?ShowID=412\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>Bobby Slayton<\/strong><\/a>? Going a little later, perhaps. (<strong>Anthony Cools<\/strong>&#8216; track record as a producer is looking dire.) Although I&#8217;ve heard good things about the new venue created for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/vacationplanner-showdetail.cfm?ShowID=366\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Soprano&#8217;s Last Supper<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/vacationplanner-showdetail.cfm?ShowID=429\"><em>Hypnosis Unleashed<\/em><\/a>, apparently they will be relocated elsewhere within the Trop.<\/p>\n<p>To no one&#8217;s surprise, <strong>Dirk Arthur<\/strong> will yield the prime-time slot (where he was, in all honesty, a placeholder) to incoming <strong>Wayne Newton<\/strong>. The Wayner will keep the <strong>Tiffany Theater<\/strong> warm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lvrj.com\/neon\/newton-signs-pact-with-tropicana-61022602.html\">until a Trop-owned show<\/a> replaces Newton&#8217;s morbidly titled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/vacationplanner-showdetail.cfm?ShowID=530\" class=\"broken_link\">Once Before I Go<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Harmon Theater<\/strong>&#8216;s ill-publicized <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegascitylife.com\/articles\/2009\/08\/13\/ae\/stage\/iq_30533792.txt\"><em>Tickled Pink<\/em><\/a> has also closed and it sounds as though that place is experiencing cash-flow problems. Normally, I&#8217;d be sanguine that departing acts would soon find new homes elsewhere in town. However, in these desperate times, entertainment has been one of the first items on the chopping block, so the evicted performers can probably use all the positive vibes they can get.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Casino explosion in Ohio?<\/strong> Not only will Buckeye State voters get to say &#8220;aye&#8221; or &#8220;nay&#8221; to Gov. <strong>Ted Strickland<\/strong>&#8216;s creation of racinos, the state could get as many as 11 gambling venues &#8212; not the seven Strickland envisions. Another ballot measure (pushed by <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>) would authorize four casinos in four major <strong>Ohio<\/strong> cities. Minimum capital investment will be $250 million and the tax rate would be set at &#8212; <em>Ouch!<\/em> &#8212; 33%. Somehow, I doubt that will scare anybody away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And they&#8217;re off!<\/strong> Congratulations to <strong>Ocean Downs<\/strong>, the first racino approved in <strong>Maryland<\/strong>.
