The would-be <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17303\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colorado-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colorado-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colorado-150x118.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colorado.jpg 817w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>law has to survive three more votes in the House before moving along to the state Senate. However, it has powerful bipartisan backers in Majority Leader <strong>Alec Garnett<\/strong> (D) and Minority Leader <strong>Patrick Neville<\/strong> (R). With two weeks left until adjournment, though, it may be a nip-and-tuck affair. The bill would juice existing casinos into sports-betting concessions while horse track <strong>Arapahoe Park<\/strong>, ironically, <a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.com\/news\/colorado-sports-gambling-passes-first-legislative-hearing\/article_b8cd65a8-655c-11e9-adfc-9f0bd6b77751.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">would be on the outside looking in<\/a>. The <strong>Department of Revenue<\/strong> would regulate and a percentage of the proceeds would go to treat problem gambling.<\/p>\n<p>Garnett says, &#8220;we\u2019ve gotten to a place where everyone is in a pretty good place, including <!--more-->the owners of the track. We wanted to be respectful of the intent of the voters when it comes to where brick-and-mortar establishments already exist to allow betting to occur.\u201d The bill, however, faces a full-court press from the <strong>Denver Nuggets<\/strong>, <strong>Denver Broncos<\/strong>, <strong>Colorado Rockies<\/strong> and three other pro teams that oppose it. They want to opt out of being bet upon, if possible.\u00a0\u201cWith the appropriate integrity provisions, the teams would support legalized sports betting in the state; as currently drafted, we do not believe that bill provides sufficient protections for the sports or consumers or fans,\u201d they wrote to the committee, although their pleas fell upon deaf ears.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>PokerStars<\/strong> can&#8217;t stop stepping in it. The company has been fined <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-12477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Internet-casino-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Internet-casino-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Internet-casino-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Internet-casino.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>$10,000 in <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> for taking action on college games. It took 216 wagers on a <strong>Rutgers<\/strong>\/<strong>Eastern<\/strong> <strong>Michigan University<\/strong> basketball tilt and one on a <strong>Monmouth University<\/strong>\/<strong>University of Pennsylvania<\/strong> tipoff. PokerStars just can&#8217;t seem to straighten up and fly right. No wonder states like <strong>California<\/strong> hesitate to license it.<\/p>\n<p>* The former owners of <strong>Centaur Gaming<\/strong> are back in business as <strong>Spectacle Entertainment<\/strong>, owner of the two <strong>Majestic Star<\/strong> riverboats in <strong>Indiana<\/strong>. They want to move the business ashore and the Indiana Lege just made it more affordable for them. Although the <strong>House Public Policy Committee<\/strong> recommended $100 million, the <strong>General Assembly<\/strong> slashed that to $20 million, seemingly clearing the way for Spectacle to build a $300 million casino onshore in <strong>Gary<\/strong>. Spectacle general counsel <strong>John Keeler<\/strong>, feeling his oats, said his company &#8220;can live with&#8221; $20 million (I bet they can) and the final sum was &#8220;much more reasonable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24003\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Holcomb.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Holcomb.jpeg 201w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Holcomb-120x150.jpeg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>Much now depends on whether Gov. <strong>Eric Holcomb<\/strong> (R) signs off on the move, which would come with a doubling of Majestic Star I&#8217;s gaming capacity. (The other boat would be phased out in favor of auctioning off a casino license in\u00a0<strong>Terre Haute<\/strong>.) HB 1o15, which is in the process of being merged into its Senate counterpart, also legalizes sports betting with a 9.5% tax rate.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone is a happy camper. Referring to the co-owner of Spectrum, <strong>Hammond<\/strong> Mayor <strong>Thomas McDermott Jr<\/strong>. went into <strong>Eeyore<\/strong> mode, grumbling that &#8220;<strong>Rod Ratcliff<\/strong> played it like a master. All the steak dinners, all the airplane flights, all the convention center work, it all paid off for him.\u00a0The Legislature got bought out, the governor got bought out, the speaker of the House got bought out, everybody got a piece.\u00a0A $100 million transfer fee goes down to $20 million. Rod Ratcliff saved $80 million.\u00a0The whole thing is very shady. The whole thing is very corrupt.\u201d <em>Casino.org<\/em> reports that McDermott wasn&#8217;t the recipient of any Ratcliff campaign contributions, which could have something to do with his choler.<\/p>\n<p>* The late <strong>Ralph Engelstad<\/strong> used to be an outlier in the hotel industry, eschewing bathtubs in his hotel rooms, lest customers soak in<br \/>\npreference to being soaked on the casino floor. However, Engelstad<br \/>\nwere merely ahead of his time. <em>Marketplace<\/em> reports that the hotel <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9009\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ImperialPalace_31-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ImperialPalace_31-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ImperialPalace_31-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ImperialPalace_31.jpg 469w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>industry is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2019\/04\/22\/business\/why-hotels-are-installing-fewer-bathtubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cutting back on bathtubs<\/a> for lack of use. \u201cWe have a lot of clients and a lot of brands who are saying, &#8216;get rid of the bathtub. The bathtub is a thing of the past. Tear them out of our old hotels and put in big, beautiful, glass- enclosed walk-in showers,&#8217;\u201d says architect <strong>Michael Suomi<\/strong>. His view is not an isolated one: Bathtub-less hotel rooms now comprise 25% of all U.S. inventory, a threefold increase across the last couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>This is kind of a shame. Both the <strong>Hard Rock Hotel<\/strong> in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> and <strong>Silver Legacy<\/strong> in <strong>Reno<\/strong> have marvelous bathtubs, to cite but two. Whether a guest chooses to use that amenity or not may have to do with how appealingly presented. But, says travel expert <strong>Joe Brancatelli<\/strong>, \u201cHoteliers say, \u2018Wait, I can give customers what they want, give the impression of being stylish and use less space, which means I can squeeze more hotel rooms into the same sized building.\u2019\u201d That&#8217;s a powerful motivator. There will, however, always be holdouts, particularly hotels like <strong>Circus Circus<\/strong>\u00a0that target\u00a0the family trade.
