{"id":24023,"date":"2019-04-26T07:48:46","date_gmt":"2019-04-26T15:48:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=24023"},"modified":"2019-04-26T07:48:46","modified_gmt":"2019-04-26T15:48:46","slug":"boyd-churchill-downs-garner-raves-indiana-governor-seduced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/boyd-churchill-downs-garner-raves-indiana-governor-seduced\/","title":{"rendered":"Boyd, Churchill Downs garner raves; Indiana governor seduced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> got a good review on <strong>Wall Street<\/strong> today, lauded both for slightly surpassing revenue expectations and for moving quickly to deleverage in the wake of the <strong>Valley Forge<\/strong>, <strong>Belterra<\/strong> and Ameristar <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8157\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/goldcoast-pic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/goldcoast-pic2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/goldcoast-pic2-150x96.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>acquisitions. <strong>Downtown<\/strong> continues to be Boyd&#8217;s bastion of strength, 8% above expectations, while corporate expenses were 2% less than modeled. &#8220;Management highlighted that performance at <strong>Gold Coast<\/strong> has been solid and share gains made last year during construction of competing properties (i.e., <strong>Palms<\/strong> and <strong>Palace<\/strong> [<strong>Station<\/strong>]), have largely maintained,&#8221; wrote <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong>. Continued dominance of the <strong>Hawaii<\/strong> trade and a long-term comeback in Downtown also aided <!--more-->Boyd. The company&#8217;s five new casinos and <strong>Lattner Entertainment<\/strong> slot routes in <strong>Illinois<\/strong> contributed $213 million in revenue and that was during a period of severe weather, so there&#8217;s no telling how they&#8217;ll perform when the sun shines.<\/p>\n<p>Greff&#8217;s sidekick, <strong>Daniel Politzer<\/strong>, reviewed <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong>&#8216; first quarter and reported that historical racing at <strong>Derby City<\/strong> &#8220;is ramping <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-21268\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>nicely and should see further upside as 100 add\u2019l machines come on line next month and new titles\/manufacturers are added.&#8221; Wall Street hopes for good weather for the <strong>Kentucky Derby<\/strong> (as do the horsemen, I assume), especially with Japanese thoroughbred <strong>Master Fencer<\/strong> sparking interest among bettors. <strong>Fair Grounds<\/strong> in <strong>New Orleans<\/strong> and <strong>Ocean Downs<\/strong> in <strong>Maryland<\/strong> helped drive a much-better-than-expected racino haul. With the addition of <strong>Miami Valley Gaming<\/strong>, CHDN has its bases covered on both sides of the <strong>Ohio River<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>* Getting a jump on completion of <strong>Circa<\/strong>, magnate <strong>Derek Stevens<\/strong>\u00a0is opening a Circa-branded sports book at the <strong>Golden Gate<\/strong>. While it\u00a0doesn&#8217;t look large, it is handsome and doesn&#8217;t bespeak improvisation. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-770x1024.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>We&#8217;ll never forget when <strong>South Point<\/strong> wanted to add a poker room that wasn&#8217;t in the casino design and ended up putting it under a stairwell, a sorry afterthought.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens has lured sports book director <strong>Matt Metcalf<\/strong> away from the <strong>Westgate Las Vegas<\/strong> book (no small achievement), who will hold down the fort while Circa&#8217;s massive, multi-tier, stadium-style book is built.\u00a0 \u201c<strong>Circa Sports<\/strong> will take people back to old-school <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> hospitality, where our guests and oddsmakers interact closely in a friendly and fun environment,\u201d promises Stevens. The Golden Gate book will have 18 TV screens and two betting windows. It&#8217;s located near valet parking, for even greater convenience. And, in keeping with the times, mobile wagering will be part of the offerings.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0A warm\u00a0<em>S&amp;G<\/em> thank-you goes out to <strong>Jeopardy<\/strong> winner and Las Vegas gambler <strong>James Holzhauer<\/strong>, who surprised the <strong>Las Vegas Natural History Museum<\/strong> with a $10,000 gift.\u00a0\u201cWe think the museum is an amazing resource for the Las Vegas community and we can&#8217;t wait to see how our donation helps it move forward,\u201d Holzhauer said. Added his wife Melissa,\u00a0\u201cWe enjoy bringing our child to the museum and seeing her face light up when she sees the animal exhibits (oh those chicks last week!). Your turn, Big Gaming.<\/p>\n<p>* Now that the rubber is hitting the road in states that have approved sports betting, politicians are discovering that reality <a href=\"https:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2019\/apr\/24\/handful-of-us-states-are-poised-to-legalize-sports\/?_ga=2.83484190.947258478.1556023890-1890692149.1527085026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is somewhat grimmer <\/a>than blue-sky projections of tax revenue. This is the case in <strong>Rhode Island<\/strong>, <strong>West Virginia<\/strong>, <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> and <strong>Pennsylvani<\/strong>a. Sports-Betting bills have faltered in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> and <strong>Maryland<\/strong>. Still, <strong>Montana<\/strong> appears to be on the verge of legalization, as does <strong>Iowa<\/strong>\u2014although Gov. <strong>Kim Reynolds<\/strong> may be swayed otherwise by adverse public-opinion polls. Two states that you&#8217;d think would be pay dirt\u2014<strong>California<\/strong> and <strong>Florida<\/strong>\u2014are stymied by tribal opposition. The tribes don&#8217;t want card rooms to have it in California and nobody seems to have the stomach for renegotiating tribal compacts to accommodate sports wagering.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0Casino expansion in the <strong>Indiana<\/strong> Lege was so convoluted that sponsor Rep. <strong>Todd Huston<\/strong> (R) wound up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/04\/24\/bill-legalizing-sports-betting-approving-casino-heads-gov-holcomb\/3560618002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">voting against his own bill<\/a>. The final product was a bill that inhibits competition by lifting the ownership cap from two casinos to six casinos and racings. Also standing to benefit are two <strong>Spectacle Entertainment<\/strong> moguls, who couldn&#8217;t buy Pence when they were running <strong>Centaur Gaming<\/strong> but found Gov. <strong>Eric Holcomb<\/strong> (R, <em>pictured<\/em>) more tractable, especially to letting himself be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/03\/28\/indiana-casino-boss-treated-gov-eric-holcomb-to-private-flights\/3166074002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">ferried around on corporate jets<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIf they haven\u2019t stepped over the line with this\u00a0they\u2019ve gotten awfully darn close,&#8221; said <strong>Common Cause Indiana<\/strong> Policy Director <strong>Julia Vaughn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the final legislation, Spectacle gets to move its <strong>Majestic Star I<\/strong> license to a better location in <strong>Gary<\/strong>, while it surrenders its second license, which goes up for bid in <strong>Terre Haute<\/strong> (not that Spectacle couldn&#8217;t win <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Indiana.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Indiana.png 253w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Indiana-150x117.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/>the auction). Spectacle will still be taxed as if owns two riverboats but will be able to consolidate the gaming positions from both vessels into its new, onshore location. In another win for Spectacle, its fee for relocation will be slashed from $100 million to $20 million, a deal that Rep. <strong>Ben Smaltz<\/strong> (R) said &#8220;is going to come back and haunt us in the future.&#8221;\u00a0<strong>Hammond<\/strong>, <strong>East Chicago<\/strong>, <strong>Michigan City<\/strong> and the <strong>French Lick<\/strong> resort all get tax rebates to make up for the new competition in Gary and Terre Haute.<\/p>\n<p>Terrestrial and mobile sports betting were also legalized. The bill passed both houses of the Lege by comfortable margins. Holcomb could still veto them but, due to his closeness to Spectacle, that appears unlikely.
