Now, as discovered by <strong>Scott Roeben<\/strong>, MGM is instigating an <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalvegas.com\/gift-shop-excalibur-surge-pricing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insidious &#8220;surge pricing&#8221;<\/a> for sundries like water and toothpaste (not cheap to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/excalibur-pic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/excalibur-pic2.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/excalibur-pic2-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>begin with), with prices escalating in direct ratio to hotel occupancy. The more people who stay, the more you pay. This is an abomination and yet another indication that Big Gaming thinks you are a bunk of marks who are to be taken for everything they&#8217;ve got. Mind you, if the geniuses behind this idea chafe at the sight of patrons bringing pallets of bottled water to their room, just wait, it&#8217;s only going to become more prevalent. MGM is test-flying this odious new concept at the bottom of its food chain, i.e., <strong>Excalibur<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Roeben thinks this is the latest manifestation of infamous <strong>MGM 2020<\/strong> and we&#8217;re\u00a0not <!--more-->about to disagree. We&#8217;d love to see how CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> spins this. Writes Roeben, &#8220;MGM Resorts has been scrutinizing every aspect of its business to increase profits, and we suspect they\u2019ve done market research showing tourists don\u2019t particularly care if their sundry store dental floss is $3 or $4 when they\u2019re on vacation. If they don\u2019t seem to care, why commit yourself to the lower price when demand goes up?&#8221; Sounds like typical MGM logic to us.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-12614\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/web1_cromwell_rendering_web_1-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/web1_cromwell_rendering_web_1-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/web1_cromwell_rendering_web_1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/web1_cromwell_rendering_web_1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>* In the same spirit, <strong>The Cromwell<\/strong> has removed its fifth- and seventh-floor complimentary coffee stations. Yes, the nickel-and-diming spirit in Las Vegas crosses company lines.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0A guest at <strong>Aria<\/strong> wanted to take a shower but was put off by the chocolate-brown water issuing from every tap in the hotel bathroom\u2014not even the chalky-white &#8220;water&#8221; to which Las Vegans are inured. <strong>KTNV-TV<\/strong> has the video. It&#8217;s yet another sign that the penny-pinching at MGM has gone too far.<\/p>\n<p>* How do you follow <strong>Donny &amp; Marie<\/strong>? If you&#8217;re <strong>Flamingo Las Vegas<\/strong>, a residency by <strong>Paula Abdul<\/strong> is what the doctor ordered. Mind you, Abdul&#8217;s singing career took a nosedive once she left the comfort of the recording studio in favor of live performance and was exposed. But then, Caesars Entertainment did wonders for Mariah Carey in terms of backing tracks and other electronic wizardry, so there&#8217;s no telling what it can do for Abdul.<\/p>\n<p>* All that preliminary hype about <strong>Japan<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Master Fencer<\/strong> in the <strong>Kentucky Derby<\/strong> may have been for naught. Online wagering site <strong>Kentucky Derby Online Bet<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t even put Master Fencer in the top five, favoring <strong>Omaha<\/strong> Beach to win the run for the roses.<\/p>\n<p>* In <strong>Macao<\/strong>, while <strong>Sociedade de Jogos de Macau<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/sjm-holdings-1q-profit-up-17pct-on-mass-ggr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was markedly profitable<\/a> in 1Q19, its flagship Grand Lisboa lagged the enclave in hotel occupancy. It filled 95% of rooms, compared to a 97% average for Macao as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>&#8216;s minions at the <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em> have been sent forth with the memo that declining visitation to <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> (March was down again) isn&#8217;t due to resort fees and paid parking. Yeah, right. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/business-columns\/inside-gaming\/fees-arent-driving-force-behind-las-vegas-strip-revenue-decline-1651904\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whatever you say<\/a>, Sheldon. (<strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> has the highest resort fees in Sin City.)<\/p>\n<p>* In case anyone was nostalgic about <strong>Japan<\/strong>&#8216;s occupation of <strong>Singapore<\/strong> during <strong>World War II<\/strong>, there will be a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/resorts-world-sentosa-to-stage-japanese-themed-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">festival of Japanese culture<\/a> at <strong>Resorts World Sentosa<\/strong> (built over the site of a WWII prisoner-of-war camp).
