It&#8217;s even gathering <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Macao-Cathedral-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Macao-Cathedral-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Macao-Cathedral-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Macao-Cathedral.jpg 407w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>poll data on how the money should be spent, even before it&#8217;s collected. Wouldn&#8217;t the Macanese city fathers being wanting to <em>incentivize<\/em> tourism? Apparently not. They&#8217;d rather bite the hand that feeds them.<\/p>\n<p>Pacific Rim casino moguls might be given pause by a report from <strong>Union Gaming Securities<\/strong> that wonders if the critical economic mass exists to support <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/us65bln-pipeline-to-lead-to-asian-casino-glut-union-gaming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$65 billion in new casino development<\/a>. Observed the report, &#8220;Approximately two-thirds of this pipeline is in <!--more-->existing gaming jurisdictions, while the remaining one-third is in a solitary, green-field jurisdiction&#8221; i.e., <strong>Japan<\/strong>. Given the amount of cash flow required to buttress all that investment &#8220;the amount of new supply is simply too much over too short a period.\u201d <em>GGR Asia<\/em> reports, &#8220;numerous projects and even whole companies could fail. The current volume of projects was more suited to a 15-year timeframe, rather than the next five years, wrote analysts <strong>Grant Govertsen<\/strong> and <strong>John DeCree<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Leaving Japan aside, they say that the current timetable of development requires cash flow in <strong>Asia<\/strong> to double, even though <strong>China<\/strong> has probably peaked <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/venetian-macao-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/venetian-macao-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/venetian-macao-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/venetian-macao-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>economically and &#8220;as so many of Asia\u2019s wealthy individuals have already been captured.\u00a0The math simply doesn\u2019t work from a GDP perspective (excepting Japan).\u201d Leaving Japan aside, planned casino investment requires double-digit GDP increases through 2025 to be sustainable.\u00a0\u201cWe think 6.5 percent is a more realistic, if not somewhat ambitious, Asia-wide annual GDP growth forecast,&#8221; Govertsen and DeCree wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long Asia has been an unbelievably forgiving place to be a casino operator, thanks primarily to China\u2019s rise. Even in Macau we think history can no longer be a guide, with blanket 20-percent-plus returns for all.&#8221; This means more emphasis will have to be placed on VIP play, even as casino companies are trying to improve their mass-market appeal.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Sands Bethlehem<\/strong> fell a fair measure short of what it promised to the citizens of <strong>Bethlehem<\/strong> and to <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> regulators. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1868\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Sands-Beth-300x178.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Sands-Beth-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Sands-Beth-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Sands-Beth.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Prospective new owner <strong>Wind Creek Hospitality<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/expo.lehighvalleylive.com\/news\/g66l-2019\/05\/14750ee2075743\/a-water-park-in-a-bethlehem-steel-building-how-the-plan-compares-to-kalahari-and-others-near-the-lehigh-valley.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">making up for that<\/a> by purchasing an abandoned machine shop and proposing to repurpose it as a giant, indoor water park. Expect 105,000 square feet of aquatic rides, plus zip lines and other amusements. Wind Creek has budgeted $250 million for the water park, plus $90 million in improvements to the Sands Bethlehem hotel, which then-COO <strong>Michael Leven<\/strong> finished in quick-and-dirty fashion. The water park better be up to snuff: The <strong>Poconos<\/strong> are chock-full of them, some exponentially bigger than what Wind Creek is pitching.<\/p>\n<p>* Kudos to <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong>, named &#8220;Casino of the Year&#8221; in the <strong>Country Music Awards<\/strong>, large-venue category.
