Luck was with the casinos in the highly volatile game, which <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/The-Strip-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/The-Strip-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/The-Strip-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/The-Strip.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>saw the house win 5.5% more on 17% higher wagering. Players avoided other table games, with wagering 10% lower and the house losing 13.5%. Slot handle and revenue were flat, for a total of $275 million, out of an overall Strip gross of $482 million. In locals markets, slot win was flat on 1.5% higher handle. <strong>Downtown<\/strong> nosed up 2% to $62 million, <strong>North Las Vegas<\/strong> was flat at $27 million, the <strong>Boulder Strip<\/strong> was also flat at $78 million, as was uncategorized <strong>Clark County<\/strong> at $102 million, while <strong>Laughlin<\/strong> slipped 3% to $45.5 million. <strong>Reno<\/strong> had a springlike 3% upswing ($49 million) but the bloom didn&#8217;t extend to <strong>Lake Tahoe<\/strong>, plunging 12.5% to $13 million. <strong>Elko<\/strong> and <strong>Carson Valle<\/strong>y were flat at $25.5 million and $9 million respectively.<\/p>\n<p>* Forty years pass in a whirlwind if you&#8217;re the <strong>El Cortez<\/strong> and it&#8217;s time to <!--more-->redo the 1980 hotel tower. $6 million has been budgeted to redo four floors comprising 64 rooms. Disruption begins early next month. Don&#8217;t say you weren&#8217;t warned.<\/p>\n<p>* Having failed to beat <strong>Detroit<\/strong> through its <strong>Ohio<\/strong> casinos, <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> will join them with a $1 billion bet on <strong>Greektown Casino-Hotel<\/strong>. Penn is picking up three-tenths of the tab, with landlord <strong>Vici Properties<\/strong> paying the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-22939\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Greektown-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Greektown-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Greektown-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Greektown.png 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>rest. Penn is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crainsdetroit.com\/mergers-acquisitions\/whats-next-after-1-billion-sale-greektown-casino-hotel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">making all the right noises<\/a>, promising &#8220;no drastic moves&#8221; and saying it will &#8220;talk with all the different departments and learn from anyone there.&#8221; Since Penn is new to the market, there&#8217;s no need to reinvent the wheel\u2014or is there? Greektown has been mired in last place through several changes of ownership, even after its quaint original casino was superseded with a 21st century casino and hotel. We&#8217;ll see some capex on the gaming floor, where Penn traditionally replaces a seventh of its games every year. Floor employees&#8217; jobs appear safe but corporate ones at <strong>Jack Entertainment<\/strong> (HQed in Motown) are soon to be rendered redundant, so there may be some fallout at the upper end.<\/p>\n<p>* In a last-minute scurry, <strong>Illinois<\/strong> lawmakers are trying to make casino expansion a <em>fait accompli<\/em> by linking it to legalization of sports betting, a <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-12558\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Robert-Rita-187x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Robert-Rita-187x300.jpg 187w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Robert-Rita-93x150.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/>something-for-everyone move. So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rrstar.com\/news\/20190528\/plans-for-rockford-casino-revived-linked-to-sports-betting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">hastily drafted<\/a> was the bill (by usual suspect state Sen. <strong>Robert Rita<\/strong> [D]) that a dry-land casino in <strong>Rockford<\/strong> was listed as a riverboat. Other vessels would go in two <strong>Chicago<\/strong> suburbs, one in Chicago proper, one in <strong>Danville<\/strong> and one in <strong>Williamson County<\/strong>.\u00a0State Sen. <strong>Dave Syverson<\/strong> (R) predicts $300 million a year from new casinos, which seems rather optimistic. He dismissed opposition as existing casinos &#8220;who have monopolies [<em>sic<\/em>]. But enough is enough.&#8221; The bill, should it pass, is expected to receive Gov. <strong>Jay Pritzker<\/strong>&#8216;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0Don&#8217;t appreciate the mechanical bartenders at <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong>? Then take your drinking shoes over to <strong>Encore Boston Harbor<\/strong>, where cocktail stations are promised to be manned by &#8220;physical bartenders.&#8221; Besides, how is Encore to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/casinos\/2019\/05\/encore-boston-harbor-approved-to-serve-alcohol-service-until-4-am-on-casino-floor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">monitor alcohol dispensation<\/a> between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. if it abdicates the task to androids?\u00a0\u201cI do understand international business. I do understand the need to compete with other casinos in the region, but I needed to be assured that everyone was taking this really seriously,\u201d said gaming commissioner <strong>Gayle Cameron<\/strong>, although the competitive issue is perhaps overemphasized, given the geographical spread between <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>&#8216; three casinos. As for Wynn Resorts&#8217; hope that it could sell Encore to <strong>John Henry<\/strong>, baseball boss,\u00a0<strong>Everett<\/strong> Mayor <strong>Carlo DeMaria<\/strong> has a two-word message for Wynn: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2019\/05\/21\/everett-mayor-carlo-demaria-enough-is-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nothing doing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Sometimes it&#8217;s better to be lucky than smart, as was the case with the <strong>Michigan<\/strong> man who parlayed a pay bonus into both a $300 casino jackpot and a $300,000 lottery win\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Odd_News\/2019\/05\/23\/Man-wins-at-casino-scratch-off-lottery-ticket-on-the-same-day\/2551558636098\/?mpse=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the same day<\/a>. The lucky man&#8217;s reaction? &#8220;My house is paid for!&#8221; It&#8217;s good to see he&#8217;s got his priorities in order.
