But will it beat nearby <strong>Danville<\/strong> to the punch? \u201cPending a positive outcome on <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-24516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Terre-Haute-casino-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Terre-Haute-casino-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Terre-Haute-casino-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Terre-Haute-casino.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>the referendum, I believe we will be ready to be aggressive with our timeline and ready to partner with the state &#8230; and the chosen casino operator to move forward quickly,\u201d said Terre Haute Mayor <strong>Duke Bennett<\/strong>. \u201cOur gaming commission is not going to be preoccupied with trying to license casinos in [other cities]. There\u2019s just one casino on the table,\u201d agreed <em>Indiana Gaming Insight<\/em> Publisher <strong>Ed Feigenbaum<\/strong>, alluding to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tribstar.com\/news\/local_news\/danville-claims-lead-in-casino-effort-but-terre-haute-officials\/article_c5fd0fa1-23b7-549a-97a6-a7574cf28a54.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the scrumdown of casinos and racinos<\/a> rushing for approval in the Land of Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vermilion Advantage<\/strong> CEO <strong>Vicki Haugen<\/strong> says as many as six casino operators could vie for Danville, but she&#8217;s got to brush up on her casino history: <strong>Chicago<\/strong>, she said, would be sought by &#8220;the real big guys, the <!--more--><strong>Harrah\u2019s<\/strong> [and] the <strong>Bally\u2019s<\/strong>.\u201d While a cash-hungry <strong>Illinois<\/strong> government is trying to rush to get shovels in the ground, applications aren&#8217;t due until Oct. 28 and could take as long as a year to approve. Says Feigenbaum, \u201cIf you get a casino in Danville at all, without even looking at what\u2019s happening in Vigo County, it\u2019s going to be a very small facility.\u201d Indeed, the two seem at risk of canceling each other out, budgeted at $100 million and creating 400 jobs to (in Danville&#8217;s roseate projection) twice that number. As would-be operators prepare their paperwork, it would behoove them to forecast conservatively.<\/p>\n<p>* Horseracing in <strong>Virginia<\/strong> comes in a box, as &#8216;historical racing&#8217; is the new leisure craze. \u201cVirginia is boring,\u201d complained retiree <strong>Annie Randolph<\/strong> as she and a thousand others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/virginia-news\/boring-no-more-virginia-has-already-begun-embracing-casino-style-gaming\/2019\/07\/07\/79477f62-9db1-11e9-85d6-5211733f92c7_story.html?utm_term=.743f60b5b942&amp;wpisrc=nl_sb_smartbrief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">queued up for the opening<\/a> of <strong>Rosie&#8217;s Gaming Emporium<\/strong> in <strong>Richmond<\/strong>. Despite having 90,000 race videos upon which to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24517\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Bagby.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Bagby.jpeg 183w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Bagby-100x150.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/>draw, the machines at Rosie&#8217;s can easily be reconfigured to display cherries and sevens, and all the other iconography we associate with slot play. A 600-machine Rosie&#8217;s at <strong>New Kent<\/strong> grossed $58 million in its first month, so there&#8217;s some serious money to be made while the Lege agonizes over full-fledged casinos. \u201cI\u2019m afraid of us doing too much, and it appears the locations are predominantly African-American areas that are close to impoverished communities,\u201d frets Del. <strong>Lamont Bagby<\/strong> (D, <em>left<\/em>). Whenever something is perceived as undesirable, it&#8217;s the black communities that get stuck with it. What else is new? Meanwhile, fattened by &#8216;historical racing,&#8217; real-life horseracing resumes at <strong>Colonial Downs<\/strong> next month.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>&#8216;s lust for gambling revenue knows no end. Not one of the five satellite casinos has opened and yet the Lege is already panting for another round of auctions (even though the haul from the first round was disappointing). There&#8217;s a legal limit, however, to how much the market can be stretched. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/business\/pennsylvania-gambling-mini-casinos-market-new-licenses-20190710.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Look at the map<\/a> and see how little real estate is still casino-eligible.<\/p>\n<p>* Obscure <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> operator <strong>Gulfside Casino Entertainment<\/strong> aced out <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9669\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Flag_of_Arkansas.svg_.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Flag_of_Arkansas.svg_.png 250w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Flag_of_Arkansas.svg_-150x100.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><strong>Warner Gaming<\/strong> and several tribal heavyweights when it came to getting endorsement from officials to build a casino in <strong>Pope County<\/strong> in <strong>Arkansas<\/strong>. However, Gulfside is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkansasonline.com\/news\/2019\/jul\/07\/agency-to-hear-casino-s-appeal-20190707-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still a very long way<\/a> from the finishing line, especially since Pope County voters have shown themselves to be adverse to casino gambling.<\/p>\n<p>* Meanwhile, gray-market video-gambling machines in <strong>Nebraska<\/strong> are being ogled as a source of\u2014what else?\u2014tax dollars. &#8220;These machines are thinly disguised slot machines,&#8221; opined former state Sen. <strong>Loran Schmit<\/strong>, who thinks the state could realize $200 million to $300 million in property-tax relief via a levy on video gambling. You will see a massive increase in those machines in Nebraska and tens of millions of dollars will be moved through those <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>machines,&#8221; he says. Schmit would know: &#8220;I operated legal video lottery machines in the state 35 years ago,&#8221; before the machines were outlawed. &#8220;It&#8217;s not a question of whether we have gambling or not,&#8221; Schmit opines. &#8220;It is a question of whether we will have untaxed, uncontrolled, unregulated gambling or whether Nebraska will have legal, taxed, regulated and controlled gambling. I have met gamblers who stopped gambling because of losses. I have never met one who stopped gambling because of excessive taxes.&#8221; <em>Touch\u00e9<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Mohegan Gaming &amp; Entertainment<\/strong> has a lot of irons in the fire, from <strong>South Korea<\/strong> to <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>, and just added one more. It has entered into a joint venture to pursue a casino-resort license at the former <strong>Hellinkon<\/strong> airport, in <strong>Greece<\/strong>. MGE is also narrowing its <strong>Japan<\/strong> focus to\u00a0<strong>Tomakomai<\/strong>, budgeted as high as $4.5 billion. Closer to home, MGE reiterated its commitment to <strong>East Windsor<\/strong>, despite some recent flirtation with the <strong>Bridgeport<\/strong> city fathers.<\/p>\n<p>* Sign of the apocalypse? Online casinos have taken over from offshore call centers are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-07-10\/online-casinos-to-overtake-call-centers-as-manila-s-top-tenant?srnd=markets-vp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">largest tenant of office space<\/a> in the <strong>Philippines<\/strong>. They&#8217;re also employing 138,000 expat Chinese. The <strong>Internet<\/strong> casinos &#8220;are expanding aggressively and they pick locations faster while the outsourcing industry is stalling,&#8221; reports <em>Bloomberg<\/em>. Well, if there&#8217;s one industry we don&#8217;t mind seeing hit the shoals, it&#8217;s offshore call centers. There&#8217;s nothing worse than trying to dispute charges on your credit card with someone who doesn&#8217;t speak your language.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>T-Rex racing<\/strong> may never displace the Sport of Kings but it&#8217;s catchy as hell and you give your spirits a lift as you wrap up another hard-fought week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Full House Resorts and Spectacle Entertainment are jostling for position in Terre Haute\u2014provided that Vigo County voters approve a casino for the city.
