{"id":24589,"date":"2019-07-29T08:33:10","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T16:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=24589"},"modified":"2019-07-31T08:06:58","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T16:06:58","slug":"tribes-brush-off-stitt-mgm-riles-jewish-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/tribes-brush-off-stitt-mgm-riles-jewish-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Tribes brush off Stitt; MGM riles Jewish community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Oklahoma<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Kevin Stitt<\/strong>&#8216;s proposal to levy higher exclusivity fees on the Sooner State&#8217;s 134 tribal casinos continues to go over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tulsaworld.com\/news\/local\/indian-gaming-official-says-tribes-united-in-opposition-to-compact\/article_b45f4fbc-ebc8-5fc9-ae32-d9e82d557dd8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">like a lead balloon<\/a>. The guv finds himself in receipt of a letter from all of the state&#8217;s gaming-enabled tribes, essentially saying that Stitt&#8217;s initiative is spinach and to hell with it. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stitt.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stitt.jpeg 183w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stitt-100x150.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/>Stitt, for his part, is playing chicken with the tribes, threatening to shut all their casinos on Jan. 1 if they don&#8217;t dance to his tune.\u00a0\u201cWe believe Gov. Stitt has been misinformed about how these compacts work.\u00a0We believe this is a correct fee structure. Either it\u2019s the same deal, or he wants to offer a better deal to the tribes,\u201d\u00a0<strong>Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association<\/strong> Chairman <strong>Matt Morgan<\/strong>\u00a0said. He counterproposed adding \u00a0new revenue streams like Class III table games and sports betting. Furthermore, he stated that an &#8220;evergreen&#8221; clause in the compact had already turned over, giving the tribes 15 more years of exclusivity.<\/p>\n<p>In our view, Stitt is confusing apples with oranges when he calls for double-digit exclusivity fees, perhaps in excess of <!--more-->20 percent. He&#8217;s confusing states with limited competition to the wide-open Oklahoma industry, where there&#8217;s so much competition that profit margins will be narrow. We hope that the tribes can educate him to a more enlightened stance.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Casino Reinvestment Development Authority<\/strong> will have a few million to spend at its discretion this year, now that it is no longer subsidizing the <strong>Miss America<\/strong> pageant. As for the latter, it has shaken the dirt of the Boardwalk from its pumps and set up business at <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong>, trading one casino town for another.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Phil Ruffin<\/strong>\u00a0has augmented <strong>Treasure Island<\/strong>&#8216;s marketing power. He&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radissonhotelgroup.com\/media_press-releases&amp;article=treasure-island---ti-hotel-casino-in-las-vegas-joins-radisson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">inked a deal<\/a> incorporating the resort into <strong>Radission Hotel Group<\/strong>. It&#8217;s also a big win for Radisson\u2014its first hotel on the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>. Radisson prexy <strong>Kevin Greene<\/strong> dubbed the pirate place &#8220;one we&#8217;ve been keen to offer to our loyal guests for quite some time.&#8221; Since Radisson is now allied with a trophy property and Ruffin has hooked up a new spigot of guests, we&#8217;re going to call this nothing but win.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> is undergoing a teachable moment after the six-pointed stars (on yellow jerseys) on its security uniforms caused some umbrage. Their resemblance to the Star of David moved one guest to write <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em> and complain that \u201cIt\u2019s a <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-22176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MGM-Resorts-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MGM-Resorts-1.jpg 277w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MGM-Resorts-1-150x99.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/>real trigger. You see something like that and you stop in your tracks \u2026 It\u2019s something we directly associate with a time, a place and a tragedy.\u201d The incident in question took place not in Sin City <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/mgm-changing-security-uniforms-after-holocaust-imagery-complaint-1809896\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">but at newly lion-ized<\/a> <strong>Northfield Park<\/strong> in <strong>Ohio<\/strong>. Consumer annoyance, for once, brought a prompt response: MGM will retire the offending badges. \u201cWe appreciate this being brought to our attention,&#8221; spokeswoman <strong>Debra DeShong<\/strong> told the <em>R-J<\/em>. \u201cWe regret anyone was offended \u2014 it was certainly not our intention. We are committed to ensuring that everyone feels welcome on our properties. Diversity and inclusion is at the core of our company\u2019s values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>California<\/strong>&#8216;s tribal casinos <a href=\"https:\/\/m.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/San-Francisco-underground-dice-scene-exposed-14188244.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won&#8217;t like this<\/a>. It&#8217;s hard enough to squelch banked games in card rooms. Imagine trying to eradicate gray-market, underground dice games in bars. Dice games are the sole prerogative of Class III tribal casinos, so we imagine the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>&#8216;s expos\u00e9 will cause no amusement\u00a0in Indian Country. Said one player,\u00a0&#8220;Don&#8217;t start. It&#8217;s a slippery slope. You&#8217;re playing a one-dollar game, pretty soon it&#8217;s 20 dollars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Where do North Koreans go when they want to kick back? <strong>Macao<\/strong> will be the answer as soon as <strong>Air Koryo<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/north-korea-macao-air-koryo-intl-hnk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">begins direct flights<\/a>.
