{"id":24653,"date":"2019-08-07T08:18:15","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T16:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=24653"},"modified":"2023-01-26T04:57:14","modified_gmt":"2023-01-26T12:57:14","slug":"maryland-just-fine-next-stop-hartford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/maryland-just-fine-next-stop-hartford\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland just fine; Next stop, Hartford?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gaming revenues were up 2% last month in <strong>Maryland<\/strong>, good for $149 million. $61 million of that was won by <strong>MGM National Harbor<\/strong> (+4%). <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Maryland-flag.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Maryland-flag.png 240w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Maryland-flag-150x100.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Market share was dominated by MGM (41%) and <strong>Maryland Live<\/strong>\u00a0(33%). The <strong>Cordish Gaming<\/strong> property grossed $49 million, a 3% uptick. <strong>Horseshoe Baltimore<\/strong> ($19.5 million) continues to fade, down 5%. Among outlying casinos, <strong>Ocean Downs<\/strong> grossed $8 million (-5.5%) while <strong>Hollywood Perryville<\/strong> gained 6% for a $6.5 million finish. <strong>Rocky Gap Resort<\/strong> was flat at $5 million. In <strong>West Virginia<\/strong>, casino revenues fell 7%, driven by a 26% plunge in table winnings. It was worse than average at <strong>Charles Town Races<\/strong>, falling 11% as table-game revenues went into a 37% tailspin.<\/p>\n<p>* More trouble for <strong>Crown Resorts<\/strong>. Aussie roundballer <strong>Ben Simmons<\/strong> says he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/ben-simmons-crown-casino-racial-profiling-australia-sixers-melbourne-nba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">denied entry<\/a> to <strong>Crown Casino<\/strong>, along with two other <!--more-->black men, in <strong>Melbourne<\/strong>. Crown &#8220;strenuously&#8221; disagrees, saying the group was admitted after producing appropriate identification. (We wonder if they&#8217;d been carded were their skins lighter.) Our sympathies are with Simmons, even if his new, $170 million contract with the <strong>Philadelphia 76ers<\/strong> will buy a lot of salve.<\/p>\n<p>* Endless foot-dragging on <strong>Tribal\u00a0Winds Casino<\/strong> could pay off big-time for <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> and <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong>. In an attempt to break the casino<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24124\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Lamont.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Lamont.jpeg 183w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Lamont-100x150.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/>deadlock in his state, Gov. <strong>Ned Lamont<\/strong> (D) is proposing to make over <strong>XL Center<\/strong> in <strong>Hartford<\/strong> as a casino and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/politics\/hc-pol-gambling-east-windsor-20190804-x6z2ujmdzbcbvebbyd4kzu3l24-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sell it to the tribes<\/a>. The latter are said to be resisting, even with Lamont dangling the lure of sports betting before them. Internet gambling would also be on the table. It would also get <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> off Lamont&#8217;s back, as MGM has offered to drop its litigation against the state in return for scrapping of Tribal Winds, putative rival to <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cI feel very strongly that if we come up with the right deal, they would not sue,\u201d the governor said, adding,\u00a0\u201cI wanted something that made sure we didn\u2019t get stuck in a legal ditch for the next five years &#8230; I wanted something that allows us to get going with sports betting and internet gambling.\u00a0Those aren\u2019t things that I do or care particularly about, but that\u2019s part of the 21st century. Our neighbors are beginning to do it, and I want to get going on it. I just worry that if we have a partial solution that leads to another round of litigation, we\u2019re not going to be any better off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With sports betting legal in <strong>Rhode Island<\/strong>, <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> and <strong>New York<\/strong>, Lamont <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Osten.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Osten.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Osten-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>is in a pincer, fearful of losing revenue to his neighbors. Evincing some impatience, the governor vented,\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll revive any [gambling] idea that lets us get off the dime, and I don\u2019t have to sit around and talk about gambling for the next three years \u2014 because in terms of my priorities, I\u2019m not sure it\u2019s in the top 20.\u201d State Sen. <strong>Cathy Osten<\/strong>\u00a0(D) is pushing for a special session to legalize sports betting in time for the <strong>Super Bowl<\/strong> but the GOP is resistant. The latter may have a point: East Windsor has been in a two-year holding pattern and isn&#8217;t going anywhere soon.<\/p>\n<p>* Trade bellicosity between <strong>China<\/strong> and the <strong>U.S.<\/strong>, plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/05\/chipmakers-retailers-and-apple-set-for-big-losses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">currency devaluation<\/a>, drove gaming stocks lower this week. Unrest in <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong> isn&#8217;t helping <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Sands-Parisian-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Sands-Parisian-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Sands-Parisian-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Sands-Parisian.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>either, although record levels of visitation to <strong>Macao<\/strong> at least bode well for mass-market play. But, <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analysts write,\u00a0\u201cVIP demand deteriorated sharply toward the latter half of July with no obvious reason, in turn suggesting it could be a short-term blip amid heightened media attention on Hong Kong, given escalated protests, and junkets.\u201d Another market-chilling factor was <strong>Beijing<\/strong>&#8216;s clampdown on junketeers who are dabbling in (illegal) online gambling, curbing VIP traffic.<\/p>\n<p>* E-sports isn&#8217;t just for pimply teenaged boys anymore. Teams are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-wales-49208457?intlink_from_url=&amp;link_location=live-reporting-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">starting to make outreach<\/a> to female players, who already make up a large part of the e-sports constituency. Yes, but can they\u2014having been cultivated\u2014be converted into casino gamblers?<\/p>\n<p>* Elsewhere in the <strong>British Isles<\/strong>, the latest problem-gambling-deterrence PR campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2019\/08\/05\/warning-slogan-gambling-ads-has-little-effect-efforts-influence-behaviour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has laid an egg<\/a>.
