And since they would use different tracks, they are not mutually exclusive. One project that appears to be dead and <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5419\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/harry-reid-shooting-rifle-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/harry-reid-shooting-rifle-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/harry-reid-shooting-rifle-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/harry-reid-shooting-rifle.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>buried is <strong>American Magline<\/strong>, deserted by both Rep. <strong>Dina Titus<\/strong> (D) and then-Sen. <strong>Harry Reid<\/strong> (D), who took $45 million in federal funding with him. As the most expensive of the three rival trains\u2014$12 billion\u2014the maglev proposal always had the steepest grade to climb. Another project, <strong>Xpress West<\/strong>, previously known as <strong>Desert Xpress<\/strong>, was bought by <strong>Florida<\/strong>-based Brightline, which in turn was invested in\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Sir Richard Branson<\/strong>, who will market the company as\u00a0<strong>Virgin Trains<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Brightline\u00a0applied earlier this month <a href=\"https:\/\/vegasinc.lasvegassun.com\/business\/tourism\/2019\/aug\/02\/vegas-california-passenger-rail-project-secure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for tax-exempt<\/a> bonds in <strong>Nevada<\/strong>. The $200 million in bonds, if approved, would enable <!--more-->Virgin to leverage $1.2 billion. Simultaneously, it applied in <strong>California<\/strong> for $600 million in bonds, which it could use to raise another $2.4 billion in debt. (California Treasurer <strong>Fiona Ma<\/strong> is a fan of Brightline: \u201cI was very impressed with Virgin\u2019s transformation of the existing ho-hum passenger rail experience to one that is now cool and hip.\u201d ) That doesn&#8217;t get the project to the finish line, as the <strong>Victorville<\/strong>-to-Vegas leg is expected to cost $6.9 billion. That&#8217;s where <strong>Palmdale<\/strong> comes in.<\/p>\n<p><em>Palmdale?!?<\/em> Virgin\/Brightline is starting with the easy part, the $1.5 billion Palmdale-to-Victorville link, which would connect Xpress West with <strong>CalTrans<\/strong> and, circuitously, <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cBoth the executive director of <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Hofbauer.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Hofbauer.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Hofbauer-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>the bank and the bond manager hearing officer commented that they couldn\u2019t remember a hearing with such a large show of support,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avpress.com\/news\/city-supporting-high-speed-rail-bond\/article_8e16a9fe-c6fb-11e9-aab2-f753e5a46187.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Palmdale Mayor <strong>Steve Hofbauer<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cEveryone realizes the magnitude and importance of this project to the long term economic and quality of life future of our region.\u201d Doing the Palmdale leg first would seem counterintuitive but it makes plausible getting aboard a train in Victorville for a 75-minute trip to Las Vegas. Having to drive most of the way, then park and ride Xpress West never made sense.<\/p>\n<p>While the former Desert Xpress is looking up, so is the former <strong>X Train<\/strong>, now <strong>Las Vegas Xpress<\/strong>. It has gone back to its initial plan of paying <strong>Union Pacific<\/strong> for priority on the rail lines for L.A. to Sin City. (Xpress West would travel on newly lain track on the right of way parallel to I-15.) According to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8067\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/plaza-pic.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/plaza-pic.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/plaza-pic-150x104.gif 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>the <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/traffic\/amtrak-las-vegas-xpress-in-talks-over-planned-luxury-rail-project-1827432\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discussions are underway<\/a> between the train&#8217;s backers and <strong>Amtrak<\/strong>, with hopes of 10-car Amtrak service to Vegas. Although train impresario <strong>Michael Barron<\/strong> says he&#8217;s ready to get rolling next year, Amtrak wouldn&#8217;t comment on the talks. One thing Barron will need is a station in Las Vegas. Land originally set aside behind the <strong>Plaza Hotel<\/strong> is now <strong>Core Arena<\/strong>. Barron toyed with dropping passengers off on <strong>Craig Road<\/strong> way out in <strong>North Las Vegas<\/strong> but that didn&#8217;t fly. There&#8217;s been muttering about a station near <strong>Mandalay Bay<\/strong>, which would seem ideal, especially if the <strong>Las Vegas Monorail<\/strong> ever connects to MBay. (Barron&#8217;s train would service Las Vegas on Fridays through Sundays.)<\/p>\n<p>This is all progress. The question remaining to be settled is, Are two trains one too many?
