The inescapable <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> said &#8220;ten Las Vegases&#8221; would not sate demand, But\u00a0<strong>Union Gaming<\/strong> analysts <strong>Grant Govertsen<\/strong> and <strong>John DeCree<\/strong> think that $65.5 billion in <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-23599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Japan-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Japan-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Japan-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Japan.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>oncoming casino projects is four times too much. And that&#8217;s a list that <strong>Muhammad Cohen<\/strong>, our favorite gaming columnist, says \u00a0&#8220;errs on the side of caution.&#8221; As Govertsen and DeCree write,\u00a0\u201cThe reality is that the current pipeline in just the existing markets (forget about <strong>Japan<\/strong> for now) requires [cash flow]\u00a0in <strong>Asia<\/strong> to literally double, even as the boom years in China GDP growth are behind it, and as so many of Asia\u2019s wealthy individuals have already been captured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crunching the numbers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/muhammadcohen\/2019\/09\/24\/asian-casino-glut-forecast-contradicts-sheldon-adelsons-ten-las-vegases-vision\/#6a5823bc6889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">see here<\/a>), the Union Gaming analysts assume a roseate <!--more-->20% return on investment and still find the revenue projections aggressive. Consider that <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> has committed on several occasions to investing $10 billion for a single megaresort in Japan, $1.5\u00a0billion more than it spent on all of <strong>CityCenter<\/strong>. Other Japanese suitors (like <strong>Lawrence Ho<\/strong>) have been still more reckless. At least Nippon is a safe bet, say the analysts, because it is &#8220;highly localized&#8221; and Japanese citizens are not big contributors to other Pacific Rim casino markets.<\/p>\n<p>When one turns to evolving markets, like <strong>Cambodia<\/strong> (where U.S. investors are leery), it gets more complicated still.\u00a0\u201cFor too long Asia has been an unbelievably forgiving place to be a casino operator, thanks primarily to <strong>China<\/strong>\u2019s rise,&#8221; write DeCree and Govertsen.\u00a0\u201cWith a supply glut on the horizon, factors like the quality of management and physical plant have never been more important.\u201d True, but can U.S. companies deliver that without giving away the store?<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0Injury reports in collegiate sports are an illicit commodity. That, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2019\/sep\/24\/grip-sports-powers-be-bury-their-heads-sand-colleg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">argues one columnist<\/a>, makes the data highly coveted by bookies and gamblers, setting up the <strong>NCAA<\/strong> for a betting scandal. We agree to the extent that the league should display an abundance of caution and adopt <strong>NFL<\/strong>-style injury-report rules.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of injury reports, don&#8217;t tear your rotator cuff while mousing to the Web site of Dr. <strong>David Chao<\/strong>, who is offering real-time analysis of pulled hamstrings and such, to help you make <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-15124\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/NFL.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/NFL.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/NFL-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>more informed fantasy and real-world sports bets. Not only is Chao a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, he was team doctor to the <strong>San Diego Chargers<\/strong> for 17 years (and Lord knows how many <strong>Philip Rivers<\/strong> temper tantrums). &#8220;Dr. Chao has become a sought-after and dependable resource for fans and media by quickly using game video to provide an opinion on the type and severity of a player\u2019s injury \u2013 as well as the short- and long-term impact for that athlete and his team.
