Mind you, it&#8217;s still a $2.5 billion business. But the quickie-wedding trade may be hurting and that wouldn&#8217;t be a bad thing. Not only does it demean the institution of marriage, it gives Vegas a bad name. (Not for nothing did my wife and I go out of state to tie the knot.) Says County Clerk <strong>Lynn Goya<\/strong>, \u201cWe can\u2019t afford to take our number-one status for granted.\u201d Reports the <em>Boston Globe<\/em>, &#8220;it\u2019s no secret that marriage rates in the <strong>United States<\/strong> have dwindled significantly in the wake of <!--more-->the 2008 financial crisis, and that shifting social values coupled with the burdens of student debt have made tying the knot for millennials unfeasible or unappealing, and sometimes both.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Las Vegas is responding to the challenge by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/news\/nation\/2019\/10\/12\/clonk-goes-wedding-bell-quickie-marriages-slow-down-vegas\/xkzwfvAlGSx6zOC9grztNL\/story.html?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">promoting the spiritual opposite<\/a> of the quickie wedding: the vow-renewal ceremony. Says <strong>Viva Las Vegas<\/strong> officiant-in-chief <strong>Ron Decar<\/strong>, \u201cPeople want to do something fun the second time around &#8230; when you\u2019re renewing, the pressure\u2019s off. It\u2019s all about fun.\u201d It&#8217;s not, however, about the boost that gay marriage was expected to have given Sin City. That ship would appear to have sailed.<\/p>\n<p>* Details are emerging on what <strong>Terry Caudill<\/strong> has planned atop <strong>Backstage Bar &amp; Billiards<\/strong>. A 40-story tower would contain 200 &#8220;live-work spaces&#8221; and 200 hotel suites. The project, which has many more facets, would be called <strong>The Central<\/strong> and encompass a 50,000-square-foot convention center, giving <strong>Downtown<\/strong> a potent new draw.<\/p>\n<p>* Speaking of attractions, <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong> continues to expand, <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2019\/9\/19\/20873305\/chick-fil-a-saltgrass-steak-house-opening-golden-nugget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adding a food court<\/a>. That&#8217;s not all. Showing his confidence in <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13839\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Tillman-Fertitta-hs_rgb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Tillman-Fertitta-hs_rgb.jpg 125w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Tillman-Fertitta-hs_rgb-113x150.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/>the appeal well-cooked beef, <strong>Tilman Fertitta<\/strong> is bringing one of his many <strong>Saltgrass Steakhouse<\/strong>s to the Nugget, providing a wallet-friendly alternative to <strong>Vic &amp; Anthony&#8217;s<\/strong>. He&#8217;s also reaching out to madly popular <strong>Chik-fil-A<\/strong>, in place of <strong>Claim Jumper<\/strong>. How Tilman will accommodate Chik-fil-A&#8217;s drive-up-based business model remains to be seen but we&#8217;re sure he&#8217;ll think of something. He always does.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Kentucky<\/strong>&#8216;s gubernatorial race is turning into a proxy fight over gambling. Attorney General <strong>Andy Beshear<\/strong> (D) takes an expansive view, favoring i-poker, sports betting and even casinos. Incumbent Gov. <strong>Matt Bevin<\/strong> (R) is a stick in the mud, favoring only sports betting\u2014maybe\u2014and only at racetracks.<\/p>\n<p>* How do you get away with price increases? If you&#8217;re <strong>Wynncore<\/strong> you stop posting minibar prices and wait for the subsequent sticker shock to sink in, according to <em>Vegas Message Board<\/em>. Take two aspirin and call <strong>Marilyn (Winn) Spiegel<\/strong> in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>* Speaking of price-gouging, we now know whom to blame for the confiscation of slot change for charity: <strong>Everi<\/strong> (formerly <strong>Shuffle Master<\/strong>). It developed the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/everi-making-change-for-charity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Everi Cares Giving Module<\/a>. It &#8220;has generated more than $700,000 in donations while also providing our operators the benefit of less coin on the floor, saving our 32 participating casinos from having to handle more than 19 million coins to date,\u201d said CEO <strong>Michael Rumbolz<\/strong>, cutting to the chase. Asks <strong>Frank Legato<\/strong>, &#8220;Does that player really want three quarters jangling in the pockets?&#8221; Why yes, maybe they do!<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Cirque du Soleil<\/strong> canceled shows that were scheduled for the <strong>Bellagio<\/strong> fountain last weekend.
