First off, <strong>China<\/strong>&#8216;s gross domestic product has slowed to growth rates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-18\/china-economic-growth-unexpectedly-slows-to-6-in-third-quarter?cmpid=BBD101819_OUS&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=191018&amp;utm_campaign=openamericas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">not seen in almost 30 years<\/a>. In fact, the R-word (&#8220;recession&#8221;) was invoked. Slow investment growth was blamed, as was the trade war with the <strong>U.S.<\/strong> \u201cChina\u2019s economy is grappling with both external and internal headwinds,\u201d economics researcher <strong>Frederic Neumann<\/strong> told <em>Bloomberg<\/em>. At least the jobless rate remains low, at 5%.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, passenger traffic into <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-18\/cathay-s-traffic-drops-7-1-in-september-as-troubles-deepen?cmpid=BBD101819_OUS&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=191018&amp;utm_campaign=openamericas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">continues to fall<\/a>. One carrier, <strong>Cathay Pacific<\/strong>, was moved to cut earnings forecasts.\u00a0\u201cOur expectation is that rest of <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-22288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Macau-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Macau-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Macau-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Macau-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Macau.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>2019 will remain incredibly challenging for the airline,&#8221; said its chief customer and commercial officer, <strong>Ronald Lam<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cThe mainland China market has been hit especially hard. Intense competition together with an increasing reliance on transit passengers over the short term has continued to apply additional pressure on yield.\u201c The airline is also <!--more-->cracking down on employees who voice support for pro-democracy forces in Hong Kong.\u00a0\u201cThe status quo for Cathay has changed forever after the protests,\u201d airline analyst\u00a0<strong>Shukor Yusof<\/strong> told <em>Bloomberg<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cThe question now is about their survival. The Chinese will want to send a very clear message.\u201d Message sent.<\/p>\n<p>* One news report implies that outgoing <strong>Encore Boston Harbor<\/strong> President <strong>Robert DeSalvio<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-16\/wynn-replaces-boston-casino-president-four-months-after-opening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">was pushed<\/a>, rather than jumping. It points to successor <strong>Brian Gullbrants<\/strong>&#8216; experience opening original-flavor <strong>Encore<\/strong> in 2008. For support it leans on <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> President <strong>Jay Snowden<\/strong> (not an uninterested party), who says,\u00a0\u201cAt the high end of our database, no question that Encore would like to have those customers.\u00a0Their slot business I think has not hit what they forecast. They\u2019re spending a lot of money on slot marketing right now.\u201d We&#8217;ll bet Penn is too.<\/p>\n<p>As for the dreaded Penn National Effect (overoptimistic revenue forecasts), it\u00a0appears to have hit <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>. The <em>Boston Globe<\/em> called last month&#8217;s <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13926\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Mathis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"110\" \/>gaming receipts &#8220;lackluster.&#8221; Added <strong>Boston College<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Richard McGowan<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cI would imagine we\u2019ve pretty much plateaued.\u00a0Basically, this market is not going to grow anymore. If anything, it\u2019s going to shrink.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/business\/2019\/10\/15\/september-was-another-lackluster-month-for-state-casinos\/Ieiv4y8eC8qhc1Wmr5gevI\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one hope he held out<\/a> was sports betting. Meanwhile, <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong> continues to find out that <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> and <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> are stronger forces than it reckoned.\u00a0\u201cWe continue to maintain strong volumes and visitation despite increased competition,\u201d President <strong>Michael Mathis<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>pictured<\/em>) said defensively, even though the &#8220;Big E&#8221; expo failed to deliver substantial gambling revenues.<\/p>\n<p>The one company not feeling the Penn National Effect was &#8230; Penn. Slot play at <strong>Plainridge Park<\/strong> was a robust $308\/slot\/day. Opined <strong>LaSell University<\/strong> academic <strong>Paul DeBole<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re still cleaning everybody\u2019s clock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* We&#8217;ve been ambivalent about covering the <strong>Mike Postle<\/strong> poker scandal, in part because it&#8217;s so damned difficult to explain. Poker players following Postle&#8217;s exploits on a live stream were flummoxed by his ability to make the right call an uncanny number of times. It defied normal odds. This not only raised the suspicion of cheating but of an inside job, since Postle played with radio-frequency-identification (RFID) cards at <strong>Stones Gambling Hall<\/strong>, the theory being that someone else with knowledge of the cards was relaying untoward information to Postle. Stones has ceased using RFID cards for the time being. Sometimes the old methods are the best.<\/p>\n<p>* In <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> and got a parking ticket? The city will comp your citation in return <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/10\/16\/us\/las-vegas-parking-ticket-food-donation-trnd\/index.html?utm_source=MXSW+daily&amp;utm_campaign=ec03b7e2f8-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_09_03_04_54_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_9a4e267260-ec03b7e2f8-332659257\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for a food donation<\/a> (this only applies to tickets issued October 16-November 16). The cutoff date for donations is Dec. 16, timing partly dictated by the purpose of the initiative, which is to help the indigent over the Christmas holidays. According to <strong>CNN<\/strong>, &#8220;the non-perishable food items must be of equal or greater value to the ticket fine.&#8221; Duly noted. And kudos to the city for a creative solution to two enduring problems.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> has a branded entrance to <strong>Allegiant Stadium<\/strong>. The <strong>San Manuel Band of Mission Indians<\/strong> will see that and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/stadium\/raiders-california-tribe-sign-stadium-partnership-1870420\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raise it a luxury box<\/a> and &#8220;at least&#8221; signage.
