{"id":25173,"date":"2019-10-23T09:12:46","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T17:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=25173"},"modified":"2022-03-04T15:30:12","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T23:30:12","slug":"big-brother-challenged-in-joliet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/big-brother-challenged-in-joliet\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Brother challenged in Joliet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If rampant facial recognition is such a good thing, how come music festivals like <strong>Coachella<\/strong> and <strong>SXSW<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/evangreer\/stop-facial-recognition-music-festivals-concerts?link_id=0&amp;can_id=ac8286c9356d49a98902d7311d1f12ca&amp;source=email-victory-facial-recognition-banned-from-music-festivals&amp;email_referrer=email_646597&amp;email_subject=victory-facial-recognition-banned-from-music-festivals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are banning it<\/a>? The casino industry could take a hint from this, especially as the rejection seems to be coming from much-coveted Millennials. As <em>BuzzFeed<\/em> puts it, &#8220;If we accept ubiquitous biometric monitoring, and normalize the idea of getting our faces scanned to get on a plane or pick up our kids from school, the experiment works and our fate is sealed. But if we organize\u2014if we refuse to be lab rats in a digital panopticon\u2014we can avert a future where all human movements and associations are tracked by artificial intelligence algorithms trained to look for and punish deviations from authoritarian norms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some are already fighting back. Two <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Joliet<\/strong> customers are suing the casino for <!--more-->going all biometric on them. The complaint <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/joliet\/joliet-harrahs-casino-faces-class-action-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zings Harrah&#8217;s for doing it<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;without creating and following a written policy, made available to the public.&#8221; <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Very naughty. (<strong>Hollywood Casino Joliet<\/strong> has been <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/joliet\/2nd-facial-recognition-suit-names-hollywood-casino-defendant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hit with a similar lawsuit<\/a>.)\u00a0&#8220;Each time plaintiffs gambled at defendants&#8217; Harrah&#8217;s Joliet casino, defendants facial recognition technology scanned plaintiffs&#8217; facial geometry and compared those scans against stored facial geometry templates in defendants&#8217; databases,&#8221; reads the complaint. It accuses Harrah&#8217;s of flouting the <strong>Biometric Information Privacy Act<\/strong>, passed in 2008 and well-promulgated since.\u00a0&#8220;As a result, defendants&#8217; violations of the Biometric Information Privacy Act were reckless, or in the alternative, negligent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In case you think that what happens in <strong>Joliet<\/strong> stays there, Surveillance Manager <strong>Bill Doolin<\/strong> bragged on camera that\u00a0&#8220;As other properties which belong to that network catch somebody [cheating], they send a report that goes to all of the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Empress-Joliet-fire-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Empress-Joliet-fire-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Empress-Joliet-fire-150x90.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Empress-Joliet-fire.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>other casinos in the network.\u00a0Within an hour or two of them catching someone, maybe in <strong>Nevada<\/strong> or in <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>, all of the casinos in that network will have that information available to them.&#8221; Reassuring, huh? The lawsuit, to which <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> has yet to respond, accuses the company of not getting advance permission to collect data, failing to inform customers in writing of the surveillance and not setting a date for destruction of the biometric data, among several other charges. Both plaintiffs are members of <strong>Caesars Rewards<\/strong>, which tells you something about how the casinos treat their &#8216;valued&#8217; customers. The gentlemen probably won&#8217;t be getting any comps anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Encore Boston Harbor<\/strong>&#8216;s public image is all wet after, as we previously noted here, rainwater <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcvb.com\/article\/leak-opens-up-at-multi-billion-dollar-encore-boston-harbor-casino\/29521172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flooded the resort&#8217;s poker room<\/a>. Newspapers and Web sites have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2019\/10\/18\/encore-boston-harbor-poker-room-evacuated-friday-following-water-leak\/mRonLoRQytOAr8mDSZbhyO\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quick to note<\/a> that Encore is five months old and the poker room even newer. Wrote one blogger, &#8220;the newness of the facility almost certainly infers a construction issue that will result in an insurance settlement from one of the casino\u2019s construction contractors.&#8221; $2.6 billion doesn&#8217;t buy what it used to.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Results from three different <strong>Nevada<\/strong> hotel-casinos failed to support the popular notion that poker rooms drive business to the slot and table game areas of the casino floor.&#8221; That&#8217;s what <strong>University of Nevada-Las Vegas<\/strong> Professor <strong>Anthony <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-25013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/rockford.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/rockford.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/rockford-150x95.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Lucas<\/strong> wrote five years ago. No telling whether <strong>Hard Rock International<\/strong> execs read that or were simply impressed\u00a0by the costly failure of the <strong>Hard Rock Hotel<\/strong>&#8216;s poker room in 2010 (a debacle for <strong>Warner Gaming<\/strong>, not Hard Rock). Either way, Hard Rock&#8217;s proposed <strong>Rockford<\/strong> casino will open with 0% poker. Zip, none, nada.\u00a0\u201cA typical <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> casino poker room with 20 tables generates about $3 million a year in operating profits,\u201d Lucas told the <em>Rockford Register Star<\/em>, adding that slot machines in the same space would produce quintuple the profit. And, having guaranteed Rockford at least $7 million a year, Hard Rock will need all the profit it can muster.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Oklahoma<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Horse Racing Commission<\/strong> approved parimutuel meets and continued racino operation for 2020 last week, seemingly knocking the props out from under Gov. <strong>Kevin Stitt<\/strong>&#8216;s argument that tribal compacts sunset at the end of 2019. Look for that contention to made strongly in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>* Gaming establishment in <strong>Japan<\/strong> continues to creep forward. A casino management commission has been authorized to take office on Jan. 7. The five members of the panel, once confirmed by the Diet, will serve five-year terms. Other than being authorized to fight gambling addiction, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/japan-casino-commission-to-be-established-in-january\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their remit will be familiar<\/a> to American observers of casino regulation.
