Pride and joy <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Desert-Diamond-2-300x165.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Desert-Diamond-2-300x165.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Desert-Diamond-2-150x83.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Desert-Diamond-2.jpeg 303w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>of the\u00a0<strong>Tohono O&#8217;odham Nation<\/strong>, Desert Diamond was the bane of Gov. <strong>Doug Doucey<\/strong>&#8216;s existence, as well as that of other nearby tribal casinos. The T-Os, as they are known, cannily exploited a loophole in the <strong>Indian Gaming Regulatory Act<\/strong> to plant their flag in the greater <strong>Phoenix<\/strong> area. After much agitatation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/glendale\/2017\/05\/17\/desert-diamond-casino-west-valley-las-vegas-style-tohono-oodham-nation-arizona-end-legal-battle\/326585001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">everybody bowed to the inevitable<\/a> and Desert Diamond became a reality. It will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ddcaz.com\/careers-open-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">create 1,300 new jobs<\/a>, and offer 1,136 slot machines and 48 blackjack tables.<\/p>\n<p>The T-Os are betting heavily on poker, with 36 tables worth on hand. There will also be <!--more-->a 400-seat bingo room and two restaurants, plus a sports bar. There&#8217;s also a high-limit, VIP gambling lounge, in case any high rollers drop by. Other resort amenities are planned but as yet unscheduled. Job well done, T-Os.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Mandalay Bay<\/strong>\u00a0killer <strong>Stephen Paddock<\/strong> has claimed another victim from beyond the grave. <strong>Kim Gervais<\/strong>, who had been paralyzed by Paddock&#8217;s bullets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/news\/nation\/2019\/11\/19\/woman-who-survived-las-vegas-shooting-dies\/eSe2mcPzE9nLLimv5aDCjJ\/story.html?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">died last Friday<\/a>. The cause of death has yet to be <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Mandalay-Bay-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Mandalay-Bay-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Mandalay-Bay-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Mandalay-Bay.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>ascertained by having been hit with bullets cannot have helped. Gervais is described as &#8220;a country music fan, small-business owner, and mother of two girls.&#8221; It baffles me that an attack that claimed 59 lives and caused 869 injuries has not led to a ban on assault rifles but that is the case. With cruel irony, Paddock cued his massacre to the strains of &#8220;God Bless America.&#8221; As Gervais herself asked \u201cWhy would one person do something like this to people? If you\u2019re that unhappy with your life, why hurt others?\u201d We are still waiting for the answer.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Joel Robuchon<\/strong>, tax dodger? The <a href=\"https:\/\/montreal.eater.com\/2019\/11\/18\/20967112\/atelier-de-joel-robuchon-montreal-tax-evasion-luxembourg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appears to be the case<\/a> following the revelation that his <strong>Montreal<\/strong> branch of <strong>L&#8217;Atelier de Joel Robuchon<\/strong> is registered in notorious tax haven <strong>Luxembourg<\/strong>. (You know who else is <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/flag_canadian_maple_leaf-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/flag_canadian_maple_leaf-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/flag_canadian_maple_leaf-150x111.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/flag_canadian_maple_leaf.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>registered there? <strong>Tamares Group<\/strong>.) As <em>Eater Montreal<\/em> puts it, &#8220;nobody sets up a company headquartered in Luxembourg just for the fun of it.&#8221; To complicate matters further, Robuchon&#8217;s eatery is a public\/private partnership with <strong>Loto-Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong>\u2014and you didn&#8217;t think there was a gambling angle, did you? Loto-Qu\u00e9bec had already been under fire for bringing in a carpetbagging restaurateur instead of showcasing someone with local roots and subsidizing the doing so. Understandably, Loto-Qu\u00e9bec has clammed up about this snafu.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Ellis Island Casino &amp; Brewery<\/strong> is upping its game with the Dec. 6 opening of its <strong>Front Yard<\/strong> outdoor\/indoor annex. The new venue &#8220;features a second-floor atrium with unobstructed views of the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>. Retractable ceiling shades, expansive windows, rich wood fixtures, exposed steel, low lighting, and <strong>Instagram<\/strong>-worthy garden walls present a lush outdoor atmosphere.&#8221; We presume the excellent Ellis Island food will remain the same, as will the best root beer in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> (or anywhere).<\/p>\n<p><em>Jottings<\/em>: Assuming that the <strong>Florida<\/strong> Lege can ever get its act together, it will have the chance to legalize sports betting in the next session. State Sen. <strong>Jeff Brandes<\/strong> (R) has introduced a trio of bills that would legitimize sports betting in the Sunshine State as a means of funding education. The licensing fee would be $100K and sports wagering would be taxed at a usurious 50%. (We didn&#8217;t say the legislation was perfect.) Meanwhile, Gov. <strong>Ron DeSantis<\/strong> (R) has left gambling revenue out of his latest budget, a wise move &#8230; The <strong>University of British Columbia<\/strong> has issued a study that reveals\u2014brace yourselves\u2014that it&#8217;s a bad idea to gamble when drunk. In the study, inebriated players were more likely to chase losses. Somebody should tell <strong>Terrence K. Watanabe<\/strong> &#8230; Speaking of chasing losses, <strong>Fashion Show Mall<\/strong> hopes to tantalize shoppers with free table-games instruction &#8230; <strong>MGM Growth Properties<\/strong> is going to do a little Black Friday shopping of its own. It&#8217;s selling 24 million shares to fund future purchases &#8230; The <strong>Philippines<\/strong> could be out $52 million a year after a ruling that offshore casinos cannot be taxed &#8230; A request for proposals for a <strong>Yokohama<\/strong> megaresort drew seven bids, including ones from <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> and <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>.
