Speaking to the\u00a0<strong>House Committee on Natural Resources Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States Oversight<\/strong>, Sharp poked them <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11565\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/United_States_Capitol_west_front-300x155.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/United_States_Capitol_west_front-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/United_States_Capitol_west_front-150x77.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/United_States_Capitol_west_front.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>about a lack of action on the 2018 <em>Broken Promises<\/em> report. The latter chronicles failed financial commitments that stretch across the <strong>George W. Bush<\/strong>, <strong>Barack Obama<\/strong> and <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> administrations. In addition to heading the NCAI, Sharp is also president of the\u00a0<strong>Quinault Indian Nation<\/strong>. <em>Broken Promises<\/em> is a 2018 follow-up to\u00a0\u201cA Quiet Crisis: Federal Funding and Unmet Needs in Indian Country,&#8221; a 2003 report by the\u00a0<strong>U.S. Commission on Civil Rights<\/strong>. It determined that funding for Native American populations was\u00a0\u201cdisproportionately lower than funding for services to other populations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Broken Promises<\/em> reads, in part, &#8220;Federal programs designed to support the social and economic well being of Native Americans remain chronically <!--more-->underfunded and sometimes inefficiently structured, which leaves many basic needs in the Native American community unmet and contributes to the inequities observed in Native American communities.&#8221; Added Sharp,\u00a0\u201cTribal nations seek only those things promised to them and their citizens <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-25503\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/sharp-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/sharp.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/sharp-150x85.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>by the solemn treaties and agreements reached between tribal nations and the United States. When tribal nations agreed to cede millions of acres of land, the federal government promised to safeguard their right to govern themselves, and to provide them adequate resources to deliver essential services effectively &#8230; Over the past several years, the United States has continued to fall short of meeting its treaty obligations as appropriations cuts, sequestration, government shut-downs, inflation and other factors impede the federal government\u2019s ability to meet its trust responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sharp is motivated, to say the least. In a sit-down with <em>Global Gaming Business News<\/em>, she said,\u00a0\u201cI felt I was called at this time to advance tribal self-determination. I knew at the age of 12 what treaty abrogation was.\u201d The Quinault have been besieged with struggles over fishing rights, among other issues. A former <strong>Washington State<\/strong> tax judge, Sharp <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15718\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Capitol-Hill-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Capitol-Hill-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Capitol-Hill-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Capitol-Hill.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>reflects,\u00a0\u201cThere are root causes for behaviors and injustices. Oftentimes attorneys don\u2019t bring the full spectrum of the law into a courtroom, but a judge is free to look at all sources of law, to seek justice as sought by attorneys. Would-be resort developer <strong>Robert F.X. Sillerman<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/obituaries\/2019\/12\/01\/robert-sillerman-built-entertainment-empires\/jygBge5raDzlYpyxZr9w6K\/story.html?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is dead at age 71<\/a>. Sillerman&#8217;s brainchild for the area, a high-end, <strong>Elvis Presley<\/strong>-themed megaresort was a casualty of the Great Recession. Sillerman, despite his control of the Presley estate, was never able to parlay that intellectual property into a significant <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> venture &#8230; or indeed any at all. Sillerman was the indirect father of <strong>Live Nation<\/strong>, bane of concertgoers everywhere. He was less successful in the electronic-dance-music market but backed the musical version of <strong>Mel Brooks<\/strong>&#8216; <em>The Producers<\/em> to considerably lucrative results. In recent years, buffeted by financial adversity, he had been living as a recluse and ends his Strip career more as a footnote than a headline.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> has been a popular stock among hedge funds, none more so than <strong>Steven Cohen<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Point72 Asset Management<\/strong>, which snapped up a significant percentage of MGM shares just as the stock was enjoying a 16% runup. While Cohen likes consumer-discretionary stocks, his track record is one of only holding them for relatively brief periods of time, so expect him to have moved on to other pastures by this time next year. The Cohen portfolio is a veritable who&#8217;s-who of gaming stocks: <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>, <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong>, <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>, <strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong> and <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong>. MGM is in good company, pardon the pun.<\/p>\n<p>* Count <strong>Hokkaido<\/strong> out of the casino race in <strong>Japan<\/strong>, at least for now. Gov. <strong>Naomichi Suzuki<\/strong> held out the possibility that he would enter a second round of bidding, if such a thing should happen. Suzuki&#8217;s remarks may send <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> and <strong>Hard Rock International<\/strong> back to the drawing board.<\/p>\n<p>* Tourists who waited until Sunday afternoon to head back for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"caret-color: #000000;\"><b>California<\/b><\/span><\/span>\u00a0got a rude surprise: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxla.com\/news\/las-vegas-to-california-traffic-backup-tops-20-miles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A 21-mile traffic jam<\/a> heading as far back as <strong>Jean<\/strong>, if not farther. That gave drivers plenty of time to absorb the soon-to-be <strong>Las Vegas Raiders<\/strong>&#8216; 9-42 humiliation at the hands of the <strong>Kansas City Chiefs<\/strong>. Who&#8217;d have thought Billings would be vying for the crime capital of America? &#8230; <em>VitalVegas<\/em> reports that <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> is shopping for a buyer. The likeliest scenario would see the real estate going to a REIT while the <strong>Fertitta Brothers<\/strong> continue to operate the casinos. This also might be one way to thwart <strong>Culinary Union<\/strong> organization, fobbing the problem off on a new owner &#8230; <strong>Derek Stevens<\/strong> is exploring adding a seven-story hotel tower to <strong>The D<\/strong>. It would go on mostly underused land but would also displace the valet-parking\/registration area.
