They want it eliminated in favor of a city manager. Difficult to argue with that one. Except for <strong>Don Guardian<\/strong>, we haven&#8217;t seen one A.C. mayor we&#8217;ve liked. The office is almost synonymous with corruption, and definitely <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-22938\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/boardwalk-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/boardwalk-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/boardwalk-150x83.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/boardwalk.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>synonymous with gridlock and cronyism. Not only is <strong>Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong> owner <strong>Morris Bailey<\/strong> contributing heavily to a referendum to phase Hizzoner out, more importantly, the city&#8217;s unions are lending their muscle to the effort. (Don&#8217;t mess with the unions in Atlantic City.) There would actually still be a mayor, under the reform proposal, but he or she would be chosen from among a downsized city council.\u00a0<strong>Unite Here<\/strong> <strong>Local 54<\/strong> President <strong>Bob McDevitt<\/strong> needs 2,472 signatures to get the question on the ballot and says he&#8217;s got them.<\/p>\n<p>The union prexy has been on a media blitzkrieg, telling <em>The Press of Atlantic City<\/em>,\u00a0\u201cThe only people that are [opposed]\u00a0are those who <!--more-->are part of the cartel.\u201d Buttonholing <strong>NJTV<\/strong>, he added, &#8220;we should have less people running a government. I think it\u2019s more efficient and it makes sense for a community this size. No major city that has the kind of hospitality industry that we have has a main drag with the kind of undesirables and buildings that should be torn down.\u201d As for charges of racism, McDevitt shot back,\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve raised five children in this city. I\u2019ve lived here since 1995. If I was a racist, I wouldn\u2019t live here.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtlanticCity911\/posts\/atlantic-city-councilman-george-tibbitt-abusing-privilege-6abc-investigation-cou\/660538590755494\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taking a page<\/a> from <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>, Councilman <strong>George Tibbitt<\/strong>\u00a0(D) refused to abide by the results of the election: &#8220;It&#8217;s a scam.\u00a0And even if they pass it, we\u2019re going to give them a good, old-fashioned butt-whooping.&#8221; Mayor <strong>Marty Small<\/strong> (D), meanwhile, continues to try and shake down the casinos for sports-betting money. It&#8217;s about time they returned the favor.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>J.P. Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong> reports that <strong>Macao<\/strong> gaming &#8220;stocks are setting up nicely to own heading into 2020, after a tough and volatile 2019.&#8221; Hedge funds and long-term investors, though, are steering <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Studio-City-1-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Studio-City-1-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Studio-City-1-117x150.jpg 117w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Studio-City-1.jpg 389w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/>clear, perhaps scared off by aforementioned volatility. Greff said he had &#8220;a tough time thinking all the negative things thrown at Macau this year (U.S. <strong>China<\/strong> trade tensions, downside macro surprises, <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong> SAR protest disruption) will recur in 2020.&#8221; He likes <strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>, <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> and <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>, with the caveat that the latter is more of a <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>-centric investment play.<\/p>\n<p>December will be a very difficult revenue comparison, made worse by a state visit from that notorious party pooper, President <strong>Xi Jinping<\/strong>. When the calendar turns over, comparisons get much easier. As far as troubles that Greff hopes are in the rear-view mirror, he notes &#8220;U.S.\u2013China trade tensions flared up in May, resulting in renewed fears of a global economic slowdown. In 3Q, Macau stocks declined further as concerns grew over Hong Kong SAR protests interfering with Macau visitation (this has more so been the case with mainland China visitors).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Not only are the <strong>Arizona Cardinals<\/strong> a rotten football team but defensive back <strong>Josh Shaw<\/strong> has been betting on games. That has earned him a suspension for the remainder of this season and all of the next. Harsh! (Heck, it&#8217;s not even legal in <strong>Arizona<\/strong>.) This is Commissioner <strong>Roger <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15124\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/NFL.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/NFL.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/NFL-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Goodell<\/strong>&#8216;s way of drawing a hard line in the sand and warning <strong>NFL<\/strong> employees that their jobs are on the line if they wager on the league. &#8220;This includes betting on game outcome, statistics, score, performance of any individual participant, or any other kind of \u2018proposition bet\u2019 on which wagering is offered,\u201d read a memo obtained\u00a0by <strong>ESPN<\/strong>. There&#8217;s something of a double-standard at work here, by which team owners (among others) can own shares of any company that &#8220;generates less than a third of its revenue from gambling-related operations.\u201d Remember, <strong>Robert Kraft<\/strong> wanted to go into the casino biz but <strong>Foxborough<\/strong> voters nixed that idea. <strong>Miami Dolphins<\/strong> owner <strong>Stephen Ross<\/strong> owns a chunk of sports-betting service <strong>Action Network<\/strong>, which we hope is performing better than his NFL franchise. <strong>Jerry Jones<\/strong> has invested in <strong>DraftKings<\/strong>. Goodell&#8217;s message seems to be that it&#8217;s hunky-dory to profit from sports betting so long as you don&#8217;t place one measly wager. Way to go, Rog.<\/p>\n<p>* So long, <em>Glory of Rome<\/em>. The <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> riverboat casino <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs4indy.com\/2019\/12\/01\/southern-indiana-casino-prepares-to-move-to-land-based-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">closes Dec. 12<\/a> and operations move to a new, land-based casino. (Thank you, <strong>Mike Pence<\/strong>.) Reversing one of <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong>&#8216;s many blunders, the casino will be re-renamed <strong>Caesars Southern Indiana<\/strong>.
