The key questions <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/brockton-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/brockton.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/brockton-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>are whether the market can support such a casino and would the state benefit from it? <strong>Rush Street Gaming<\/strong> will be all gung-ho for the move, as it&#8217;s still pushing a $677 million project in <strong>Brockton<\/strong>. Still, Rush Street attorneys confessed to impatience, writing,\u00a0\u201cWe ask that whatever else you do\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0you recognize that the ongoing delay comes at a tremendous human and financial cost.\u00a0We ask that you move the process forward quickly.\u201d Oh, the humanity. Still, as the <em>Globe<\/em> puts it, &#8220;regulators are now facing an increasingly <!--more-->complex and uncertain gambling landscape,&#8221; none of the three existing casinos having performed up to projections.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do regulators worry about a fourth, tribal casino in <strong>Taunton<\/strong>\u2014although it looks like a very long shot at this point\u2014putting a private-sector casino in Brockton or elsewhere nearby is not going to thrill <strong>Wynn <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6975\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/neil-bluhm-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/neil-bluhm-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/neil-bluhm-150x105.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/neil-bluhm.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Resorts<\/strong> and <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>, both of whom are likely to resent the competition. Commissioner <strong>Enrique Zuniga<\/strong> thinks that the interest of an operator as successful as <strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong> (<em>pictured<\/em>) implies that the Brockton market is viable.\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s somebody with the experience of operating in other competitive areas that thinks they can make money here.\u00a0That\u2019s about as good an indication as we\u2019re going to have.\u201d Yes, indeed, and Bluhm wants to risk his money why stop him, especially with\u00a0Mayor-elect <strong>Robert F. Sullivan<\/strong> being noncommittal on the casino issue? Instead of opening a can of worms by tinkering with the casino-enactment law, which could wreak havoc on <strong>Deval Patrick<\/strong>&#8216;s grand scheme, why not give Bluhm a shot? Have we asked enough questions?<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0<strong>Hokkaido<\/strong> Gov.\u00a0<strong>Naomichi Suzuki<\/strong> may have pulled his prefecture out of the running for a casino megaresort but <strong>Hard Rock International<\/strong> isn&#8217;t taking no for an answer. &#8220;I\u00a0really don\u2019t understand [the Governor\u2019s decision] and I feel it\u2019s a bit of a waste,\u201d complained <strong>Hard Rock Japan<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11564\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/japan_flag_01-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/japan_flag_01-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/japan_flag_01-300x300-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/>President\u00a0<strong>Ado Machida<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cAn IR was expected to help drastically mitigate the problems of population decline, the declining birthrate, an aging population and the tax decline that comes with that.\u201d I don&#8217;t get the declining-birthrate part. I mean, yeah, casinos are sexy but still &#8230; Machida promised that his company &#8220;will continue our efforts for a future IR bid in Hokkaido.\u201d <strong>Mohegan Gaming &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>, meanwhile, is looking for a new place to nest, as is <strong>Rush Street Japan<\/strong>. Considering that Suzuki&#8217;s decision was made based on environment concerns we would advise Hard Rock to tread lightly, lest it be perceived as a bunch of Ugly Americans. However, with $5 billion in Hard Rock bucks being dangled before him, Suzuki hasn&#8217;t completely ruled out a reversal of his reversal somewhere in the hazy yon.<\/p>\n<p>* The path of the <strong>Pamunkey Nation<\/strong> toward a <strong>Virginia<\/strong> casino just got easier. Rather than jump through a series of federal hoops to establish a sovereign nation within <strong>Norfolk<\/strong> city limits, the city and tribe are going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wavy.com\/news\/local-news\/norfolk\/norfolk-nixes-plan-for-indian-nation-in-city-limits-instead-asks-pamunkey-tribe-to-open-commercial-casino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">pursue a commercial casino<\/a>. Of course, that opens the door to sundry potential competitors but it speeds up the Pamunkey&#8217;s eligibility quite a bit. The proposed casino is being downscaled from $700 million to $200 million (meaning 2,500 fewer jobs). Meanwhile, there&#8217;s still the small matter of casino gambling not being legal in Old Virginny yet, although a bill to put casinos in five\u00a0southern-tier cities is currently before the Lege.
