Santarelli&#8217;s opposite number at <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong>, analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong> countered that &#8220;There&#8217;s value for those who are patient.&#8221; He began by noting a 16% falloff in shares of <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>, <strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>, <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> and <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>. He observed that &#8220;a very harsh [cash flow]\u00a0impact is already being reflected at current levels, and thus we have some level of reasonable confidence that there are values to pick through in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/casino-stocks-take-a-beating-as-spread-of-coronavirus-leads-to-travel-bans-2020-01-27?mod=investing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the recent carnage<\/a>.&#8221; In other words, Buy Now. (Especially Melco.)<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, Melco has taken the smallest cash-flow hit (15%) and MGM the worst (41%). While MGM stock has only slid 12%, compared to <!--more-->20% for Melco and 17% for Wynn, &#8220;the downward move for MGM as particularly punitive &#8230;\u00a0though the company is being given an opportunity here to buy back a sizable chunk of its own stock.&#8221; With exquisite <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Grand-Lisboa-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Grand-Lisboa-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Grand-Lisboa-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Grand-Lisboa.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>understatement, Greff observed that &#8220;Chinese New Year visitation to Macau has not been encouraging.&#8221; Why? New Year tourism &#8220;has historically not been closely correlated&#8221; with gross gaming revenue. &#8220;We note that ~1\/3 of Golden Week visitation to Macau occurs during the latter four days of the week, so we will stay tuned for further updates (though it\u2019s hard to imagine the data is likely to positively inflect in the next four days).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The consensus opinion, generally speaking, is that we&#8217;re unlikely to have a rerun of the SARS epidemic, if only because the government of <strong>China<\/strong> was quicker to react this time around and has handled the matter with greater transparency. But while the Chinese government has tried to curb the movement of its citizens, particularly out of &#8220;hot zone&#8221; <strong>Wuhan<\/strong>, carrier <strong>Air China<\/strong> decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikeboyd\/2020\/01\/27\/sudden-free-fall-chinaus-air-traffic\/#7be35c33208c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">bust out a weekend flash sale<\/a>: $399 for a round-trip from <strong>JFK International<\/strong> to <strong>Shanghai<\/strong>. Yes, please, fly me to a coronavirus-infected city, so long as I can get a good price for it.<\/p>\n<p>So far Macao casinos have avoided forced closure, although Chief Executive <strong>Ho Iat Seng<\/strong> repeatedly brandishes the threat, adding that in the case of a coronavirus outbreak\u00a0no one would go to a casino anyway.\u201d (Wanna bet?) Seng has gone so far as to order casino staff to wear surgical <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7167\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/wynn-pic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/wynn-pic.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/wynn-pic-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>masks, which must be a rather ghoulish sight. The virus has been a boon to mask manufacturers, who are seeing prices skyrocket. Chinese officials have ordered 20 million of them, which is going to make somebody very rich. Macao&#8217;s loss may be <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>&#8216; gain. It&#8217;s reported that Chinese players are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/tracking-the-virus-outbreak-s-impact-on-business-and-travel-1.1380083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heading for Sin City instead<\/a>. According to Wynn Resorts,\u00a0\u201cAlthough as of this date there are no reported cases of the coronavirus in Las Vegas that we are aware of, we will be in close contact with the <strong>Southern Nevada Health District<\/strong> who is monitoring the situation along with the [<strong>Centers for Disease Control<\/strong>].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In spite of the Chinese government getting out in front of the coronavirus problem, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/01\/economic-impact-coronavirus-likely-top-40-billion-1202841980\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">economic impact is feared to be $40 billion<\/a>, the same as in the SARS crisis. Gambling economies dependent on Chinese VIP play, like <strong>Singapore<\/strong> and the <strong>Philippines<\/strong> are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/news\/world\/2020\/01\/27\/china-extends-holiday-expands-efforts-fight-virus\/f9pkXuv66z68dagR7qtwZL\/story.html?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fearing the coronavirus pinch<\/a>, as the disease continues to spread like wildfire. Countries reporting cases now number\u00a0<strong>Thailand<\/strong>, <strong>Taiwan<\/strong>, <strong>Japan<\/strong>, <strong>South Korea<\/strong>, <strong>Vietnam<\/strong>, Singapore, <strong>Malaysia<\/strong>, <strong>Nepal<\/strong>, <strong>France<\/strong>, <strong>Canada<\/strong> and <strong>Australia<\/strong>. Here at home, coronavirus has been reported in <strong>Washington State<\/strong>, <strong>California<\/strong>, <strong>Chicago<\/strong> and <strong>Arizona<\/strong>. The virus is a &#8216;gateway disease&#8217; to pneumonia and, as a former two-time pneumonia sufferer I can tell you that&#8217;s one life-threatening diagnosis you don&#8217;t want to get.<\/p>\n<p>* Several leading casino companies are tipped as potential buyers of <strong>DraftKing<\/strong>s, even as the sports-betting giant continues to lose money hand over fist. With incoming CEO <strong>Tom Reeg<\/strong> talking about shedding Internet <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17142\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Draft-Kings-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Draft-Kings-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Draft-Kings-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Draft-Kings.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>casinos and sports-betting operations, <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> appears to be out, as is MGM, which has plenty of sports-betting irons in the fire already. However, Las Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts have plenty of cash on hand to finance a DraftKings takeover. Given Sands&#8217; lack of diversification, the match might not make much sense but if <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> ever gets around to legalizing sports betting, Wynn is indecently well positioned to capitalize.<\/p>\n<p>* The horsey set is up in arms about the prospect of Class III casinos in <strong>Virginia<\/strong>. Not because it would threaten the tracks, but because it would rechannel revenue from tracks&#8217; &#8216;historical racing&#8217; parlors, with their slot-<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13755\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse.jpg 241w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse-150x130.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/>like betting on old races. Huffed <strong>Colonial Downs<\/strong> COO <strong>Aaron Gomes<\/strong>, \u201cColonial Downs Group and <strong>Peninsula Pacific Entertainment<\/strong> have been in the gaming industry for over 20 years and in our experience, no state has ever expanded gaming without giving consideration to an incumbent gaming operator, especially one who has invested $300 million, delivered tens of millions in tax revenues to the state and its localities and created more than 1,000 new jobs.\u201d If historical-racing parlors crumple under casino-based competition it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldcourier.com\/news\/colonial-downs-seeks-inclusion-in-casino-talks\/article_14942b85-9a8c-5031-a0af-545e4b05a891.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">represents an existential threat<\/a> to racetrack subsidies, which are part of the 22.5% tax rate paid by the racinos, and you can expect a hue and cry whenever the underwriting of the Sport of Kings is menaced.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Betfred USA<\/strong> is a sports-betting operator on the move. In one week it has inked deals with <strong>Wind Creek Bethlehem<\/strong> and now with <strong>Grand Falls Casino &amp; Golf Resort<\/strong>. It&#8217;s now eying <strong>Colorado<\/strong>, newest state to approve sports wagers and where Betfred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinobeats.com\/2020\/01\/27\/betfreds-grand-falls-casino-sportsbook-set-for-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already has a pact<\/a> with <strong>Saratoga Casino Black Hawk<\/strong>. It&#8217;s a company to watch.<\/p>\n<p>* Americans like to patronize casinos (2.5 times a year) but not as much as they <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/284009\/library-visits-outpaced-trips-movies-2019.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">go to the library<\/a>. Women are more literate than men, but the latter go to casinos more often (3.4X a year) than do the ladies (1.7X).
