Penn plans to unroll a Barstool-branded line of sports books, online applications and mobile-wagering services. Barstool, in turn, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/29\/penn-national-stock-soars-on-gaming-partnership-with-barstool-sports.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will promote Penn until 2060<\/a> &#8230; infinity in casino years. &#8220;The stake is a big play for the regional gaming company <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo.jpg 274w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/>to expand its exposure in sports betting, which will reduce its marketing costs and the price of customer acquisition. Penn is hoping it lures younger gamblers into its retail and online offerings as well,&#8221; reported <strong>CNBC<\/strong>, which also disclosed that Barstool&#8217;s core audience members are known as &#8220;Stoolies,&#8221; which sounds rather cloacal to us.<\/p>\n<p>Penn CEO <strong>Jay\u00a0Snowden<\/strong> described his company as &#8220;scrappy&#8221; and said Barstool was a kindred spirit in that respect. <strong>Wall Street<\/strong> certainly loved the marriage.\u00a0\u201cThe $450 million valuation implied by this agreement builds in future growth enabled by Penn. This deal will clearly raise Penn\u2019s profile in sports betting with the returns on investment demonstrated over time,&#8221; said <strong>Jefferies Gaming<\/strong> analyst <strong>David Katz<\/strong>. Barstool itself generated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/1\/29\/21113130\/barstool-sports-penn-national-deal-dave-portnoy-chernin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as much as $100 million in revenue<\/a> last year, &#8220;with the majority coming from podcasts, merchandise sales, and gambling deals.&#8221; Also making out like a bandit <!--more-->is <strong>Chernin Group<\/strong>, which bought into Barstool for $25 million and is seeing an exponential return on its investment. <strong>Vox.com<\/strong> opines that, in Penn, Barstool &#8220;has found an owner that is unlikely to be worried about its brand and content, which is both popular and oftentimes intentionally abrasive.&#8221; Ironically, Vox cites the unwanted <strong>Tropicana Las Vegas<\/strong> as Penn&#8217;s best-known casino.<\/p>\n<p>It will be interesting to see whether Penn&#8217;s plurality stake equals a reversal of Barstool founder <strong>Dave Portnoy<\/strong>&#8216;s aggressive anti-union tactics. Barstool <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/daily-labor-report\/barstool-sports-settles-with-labor-board-over-anti-union-tweets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has already been spanked<\/a> for this once. <em>Forbes<\/em> also cautions that the deal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/danielmarcus\/2020\/01\/29\/barstool-sports-makes-penn-national-deal-official-at-450-million-valuation\/#4af818383761\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">is not to be read<\/a> as a valuation-lifter for all sports-betting companies. Barstool &#8220;has been willing to leverage its\u2019 rabid and loyal fan base into other revenue opportunities outside of the traditional advertising model &#8230;\u00a0Whereas other media brands\/companies attempt to make a shift towards premium content, subscription-based models and the like when growth plateaus, Portnoy tested and demanded his audience\u2019s loyalty on a regular basis &#8211; and each time his audience rose to the occasion.&#8221; Such is the power of the Barstool brand that Penn is already planning to leverage it into a freestanding pizza-parlor chain. Now the question is whether the brand equity is so great that Barstool can vie with the <strong>FanDuel<\/strong>s and <strong>DraftKings<\/strong> of this world.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0<strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> has evidently gotten past President <strong>Rob Goldstein<\/strong>&#8216;s public qualms about the return on investment in <strong>Japan<\/strong>. It dispatched <strong>Marina Bay Sands<\/strong> prexy\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Japan-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Japan-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Japan-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Japan.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>George Tanasijevich<\/strong> to tell Nipponese reporters that the government must &#8220;make sure that we reduce misconceptions about our industry and its impact on the market.\u201d His views were seconded by those of <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> President of Development <strong>Chris Gordon<\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/japan-casino\/casino-operators-woo-wary-japanese-public-after-bribery-scandal-idINKBN1ZS1W8?il=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spun the recent arrest<\/a> of lawmaker\u00a0<strong>Tsukasa Akimoto<\/strong> as a plus, saying,\u00a0\u201cWe want to compete in a market where it\u2019s really well-regulated.\u201d And in case any casino applicants were even <em>thinking<\/em> about putting a thumb on the scales, the Akimoto bust puts them on notice\u2014so we guess it <em>is<\/em> a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> can&#8217;t make up its mind about <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>. Five years after selling <strong>Playground Pier<\/strong> to <strong>Bart Blatstein<\/strong>, it is buying the retail complex back &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2020\/jan\/28\/atlantic-city-pier-sold-return-of-gambling-to-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for an undisclosed price<\/a>. Blatstein will presumably use the money to finance his dream of returning casino action to the Showboat. While demurring that &#8220;nothing has changed&#8221; on the casino front, Blatstein told reporters,\u00a0\u201cI&#8217;m very happy because I&#8217;m completely focused <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Showboat_Atlantic_City-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Showboat_Atlantic_City-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Showboat_Atlantic_City-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Showboat_Atlantic_City.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>on the Showboat. Now there&#8217;s no distraction from what I&#8217;m going to do at Showboat. More than ever, I am extremely bullish on Atlantic City.&#8221; We&#8217;re glad someone is. His lack of transparency hints at Blatstein taking a bath on the real estate, into which he had sunk $52 million, to little avail. (Scant parking and circuitous access were blamed for The Playground&#8217;s failure.) Caesars, which will soon quadruple down on the Boardwalk with the addition of <strong>Tropicana Atlantic City<\/strong>, also said it was upbeat on the city&#8217;s future.\u00a0\u201cCaesars remains committed to Atlantic City, and the future development of our brand through job growth and capital investment,&#8221; it stated.\u00a0\u201cWe are also dedicated to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to position the city as a leading gaming and entertainment destination here on the East Coast.\u201d After all the Debbie Downer talk from <strong>Tilman Fertitta<\/strong> and <strong>Jim Allen<\/strong>, that kind of confidence is welcome.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong> is having second thoughts about that hotel thing. It&#8217;s entering talks with <strong>Red Lion Inn<\/strong> owner <strong>Main Street Hospitality Group<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2020\/01\/red-lion-inn-owner-exploring-deal-with-mgm-springfield-continues-work-on-paramount-theater-massasoit-house-renovation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">about &#8220;exploring&#8221; a hotel project<\/a> in <strong>Springfield<\/strong>. The news comes on the heels of a management shakeup at the casino, which posted its worst-ever revenues in December. The casino does have 250 hotel rooms but scrapped a glass-curtain-wall tower early in the development stage (local politicians didn&#8217;t take it well) and may be thinking better of the move. Main Street has extensive local ties, which would make it a logical partner for MGM, which has been trying to synergize with area businesses.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0<strong>ACS<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>PlayOn<\/strong> hardware is expanding past <strong>The D<\/strong> and <strong>Golden Gate<\/strong>, making the leap to <strong>The Strat<\/strong>, the <strong>Palms<\/strong> and sundry other <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> properties.\u00a0\u201cSometimes the time you <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7096\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Strat-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"122\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Strat-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Strat-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Strat.jpeg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 122px) 100vw, 122px\" \/>spend finding an ATM and coming back to the table disrupts your flow. Plus, you don\u2019t have to risk losing your spot,\u201d said <strong>Golden Entertainment<\/strong> veep <strong>Jay Fennel<\/strong>, in defense of the product. While PlayOn can be used on slots, so far there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/cashless-gaming-available-at-strat-palms-d-las-vegas-1945564\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no apparent plans to deploy it<\/a> in that fashion. The <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> has Golden&#8217;s back.\u00a0\u201cOur focus has been on customer choice and introducing more opportunities in terms of how they pay for that experience,\u201d said Senior Vice President for Strategic Communications <strong>Casey Clark<\/strong>. \u00a0He added that the devices could provide insight into problem gambling by their tracking of player spending habits:\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s greater opportunities for bettors to set limits, both time limits and monetary limits.\u201d Or lose impulse control. The <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong> people mover won&#8217;t be finished boring until next year. Vegas being Vegas, we predict an unseemly, last-minute rush to get <strong>Allegiant Stadium<\/strong> open by its date-certain of July 31. Wags on Twitter are likening its appearance to the &#8220;<strong>Death Star<\/strong>, a slow-cooker appliance, a hockey puck or maybe a big <strong>Roomba<\/strong> vacuum.&#8221; <strong>Resorts World Las Vegas<\/strong> continues to muddle along toward a mid-2021 debut as does the <strong>Madison Square Garden<\/strong> sphere behind <strong>Venelazzo<\/strong>. (Imagine <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>&#8216;s disembodied head projected across thousands of feet of video screens.) The cone of silence has re-descended over <strong>The Drew<\/strong>. Could <strong>Steven Witkoff<\/strong> be having problems drumming up the money? Resorts World has the look of a white elephant, which can hardly make investors want to pony up billions to finish what used to be pale pachyderm <strong>Fontainebleau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0Don&#8217;t expect much from a sports-betting bill being debated in the <strong>Washington State<\/strong> Lege. It would preclude betting on in-state collegiate teams, wagering via the Internet or via mobile devices. At least tribal casinos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2020\/jan\/28\/house-considers-legalized-betting-on-some-sporting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">would have exclusivity<\/a> on the action but the setup is seemingly designed to bring in as little money as possible or\u00a0\u201cfigure out a slow and steady way to kind of enter into this new arena of gambling,\u201d as\u00a0<strong>House Commerce &amp;\u00a0Gaming Committee<\/strong> Chairman <strong>Strom Peterson<\/strong> put it.\u00a0\u201cThese are some interesting conversations we\u2019re going to have to have,\u201d he added, when it was noted that some of the bans could play hob with March Madness wagering, should a Washington team make it to the tourney.<\/p>\n<p>Saying\u00a0\u201cyou\u2019ll do nothing to stop the illicit gambling in the state,\u201d <strong>Maverick Gaming<\/strong> owner <strong>Eric Persson<\/strong> protested the idea of tribal exclusivity. Speaking for the state&#8217;s aboriginals,\u00a0<strong>Puyallup Tribe<\/strong> Chairman <strong>David Bean<\/strong> rejoined, &#8220;You know us. You trust us. We invest our resources in the state of Washington.&#8221; As for allowing sports betting in card rooms (where it would surely boost business), Persson testified,\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s what the consumer wants.\u201d The usual worries about underage gambling were voiced, with Persson reassuring the Lege that, given the choice, people will opt for safe, legal betting. Persson backs mobile wagering, the tribes do not. In whatever form, the horse tracks want in too.
