(The deal would still need the approval of the Lege, which has balked at Gov. <strong>Gina Raimondo<\/strong>&#8216;s <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/web1_WEB-IGT-LOGO-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/web1_WEB-IGT-LOGO-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/web1_WEB-IGT-LOGO-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/web1_WEB-IGT-LOGO.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>20-year, no-bid juice job for IGT.) The new company will be split 60\/40 in IGT&#8217;s favor and be contracted to provide slot machines and electronic lottery terminals to the state. For its part, Twin River <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/e266d6149cbeb791aa344aacd24fff85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">would put $100 million into upgrades<\/a> to its casino in <strong>Lincoln<\/strong>. Regulation will continue to reside with the\u00a0<strong>Rhode Island Division of Lotteries<\/strong>, which rides herd on the $400 million\/year industry. Raimondo was noncommittal, saying through a spokesman,\u00a0\u201cWe look forward to reviewing this new proposal as it makes its way through the legislative process.\u201d\u00a0Senate President <strong>Dominick Ruggerio<\/strong> (D) and scandal-plagued House Speaker <strong>Nicholas Mattiello<\/strong> (D) were both more effusive about the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Neither side made many concessions, although Twin River committed to <!--more-->making its <strong>Providence<\/strong> corporate headquarters permanent. IGT, for its part, will continue to press lawmakers for a contract that runs through 2043, which has been one of the big sticking points on capitol hill.<\/p>\n<p>* The <strong>Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce<\/strong> heard from executives representing eight of the city&#8217;s nine casinos and the mandate\u00a0was clear: No <strong>Showboat<\/strong>. A recent blast by <strong>Hard Rock International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Jim Allen<\/strong> seems to have emboldened <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3248\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/hilton-atlantic-city-casino-hotel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/hilton-atlantic-city-casino-hotel.jpg 264w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/hilton-atlantic-city-casino-hotel-150x129.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/>the casino community to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/9104cfd4e60620f8af9268f3979cfa83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get the message across<\/a>. For example, <strong>Tropicana Atlantic City<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Steve Callender<\/strong> was complaining about &#8220;three-foot potholes&#8221; that had gone unfixed and <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> Regional President <strong>Ron Baumann<\/strong> groused \u201cthe Northeast market is saturated; the last thing <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> needs is another casino.\u201d \u201cWe all agree we\u2019re not pleased with where we are with the Tourism District,\u201d said <strong>Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong> President <strong>Mark Giannantonio<\/strong>, speaking for all. \u201cOur buildings can\u2019t be surrounded by drug addicts and prostitutes,\u201d piled on <strong>Hard Rock Atlantic City<\/strong> President <strong>Joe Lupo<\/strong>. \u201cThe street lights need to work. There\u2019s a lot of work that needs to be done. The city needs to be in better shape. Go out and buy the biggest bulldozer the county has to offer, and you could probably make a lot of positive changes.\u201d And, for once, tearing down <strong>Trump Plaza<\/strong>\u00a0isn&#8217;t the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Atlantic City Mayor <strong>Marty Small<\/strong> (D) turned a deaf ear to the signature industry&#8217;s complaints, choosing to praise himself instead. \u201cI\u2019ve been mayor for a little over three months and we are doing a great job,\u201d he said. \u201cMy administration is committed to safe and clean, and we\u2019ve shown that in a big way.\u201d As for Showboat owner <strong>Bart Blatstein<\/strong>, he chose to stay above (or at least aside from) the fray, probably the best tactic under the circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>* Move along, nothing to see. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/abe-rejects-call-for-probe-on-casino-lobbying-in-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">That&#8217;s the message<\/a> from <strong>Japan<\/strong> Prime Minister <strong>Shinzo Abe<\/strong>, dismissing calls for a corruption probe involving the country&#8217;s nascent casino industry. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Shinzo-Abe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Shinzo-Abe.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Shinzo-Abe-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>Meanwhile, scandal-magnet <strong>Tsukasa Akimoto<\/strong> has been arrested <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/akimoto-indicted-on-casino-bribery-faces-fresh-arrest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8230; again<\/a>. This time the charges are that he received bribes above and beyond those for which he had previously been pinched. Part of the accusation is that he assented to\u00a0a free trip to the <strong>China<\/strong> headquarters of <strong>500.com<\/strong>, which would constitute acceptance of a bribe. Akimoto maintains his innocence. <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> has even been dragged into the evolving scandal, with questions being raised over whether he personally lobbied Abe on behalf of specific gaming operators in 2017. Abe&#8217;s response was that he met with U.S. casino plutocrats but that Trump didn&#8217;t intercede on anyone&#8217;s behalf.<\/p>\n<p>While a delay in the casino program seems unlikely (despite public sentiment to the contrary), <strong>Wynn Resorts Development<\/strong> President <strong>Chris Gordon<\/strong> spun it as a positive, saying, &#8220;you don&#8217;t want to rush these things.&#8221; Not that Japan&#8217;s tortoise-paced casino legalization could ever be described as &#8216;rushed.&#8217; <strong>Marina Bay Sands<\/strong> President\u00a0<strong>George Tanasijevich<\/strong> handwaved the whole matter, saying,\u00a0\u201cWe just let the process unfold, it is the government\u2019s job and it doesn\u2019t involve us. We stay focused preparing for the request for proposal.\u201d As for <strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>, it has troubles of its own. <strong>Reuters<\/strong> reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/melco-resorts-cooperating-with-japan-casino-probe-reuters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it was cooperating<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-japan-casino-melco-resorts\/hong-kong-s-melco-cooperating-with-japan-casino-bribery-probe-source-idUSKBN1ZS0FF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yet another bribery investigation<\/a>. Ironic, isn&#8217;t it, that one of the attractions of Japan was supposed to be that it was squeaky clean?<\/p>\n<p>* First-person-shooter e-sports are uncool, at least in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong>. Game <em>Fortnite<\/em> has been nixed from varsity e-sports play (and with good reason, we think). <strong>Epic Games<\/strong>&#8216; defense is essentially that <em>Fortnite<\/em> &#8220;features no gore and has a cartoon aesthetic.&#8221; \u201cThis announcement [of the game&#8217;s introduction] was particularly troubling in that it came on the anniversary of one of Kentucky\u2019s darkest days, the <strong>Marshall County<\/strong> incident,\u201d wrote <strong>Kentucky High School Athletic Association<\/strong> Commissioner <strong>Julian Tackett<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/esports\/2020\/01\/29\/fortnite-kentucky-ban-high-schools\/?wpisrc=nl_sb_smartbrief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">alluding to a 2018 high school massacre<\/a>. Epic was defiant, saying it would continue to offer <em>Fortnite<\/em> through e-sports clubs. <em>Fortnite<\/em> is the most profitable of video games, identified by none other than <strong>Netflix<\/strong> as its biggest competitor.<\/p>\n<p>* Kudos to <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> President of Global Gaming Development <strong>Brian Sandoval<\/strong> for his past support of the <strong>Army National Guard<\/strong> in <strong>Nevada<\/strong>, where he served two terms as governor. However, we think the real congratulations go to MGM which transcends mere lip service to its employees in the military by continuing to pay out 100% of their base salary while they were deployed. That&#8217;s an example every major company in gaming should be following. Incidentally, in the same press release, MGM said it &#8220;is exploring the possibility of bringing a unique and world-class integrated resort to Japan.&#8221; That&#8217;s an awfully demure way of putting it. How about &#8220;conducting a full-court press&#8221;? There&#8217;s no shame in that.<\/p>\n<p>* Did you know that daily fantasy sports purveyors have dedicated meteorologists? It&#8217;s true. DFS is being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/1\/29\/21112491\/daily-fantasy-sports-betting-dfs-merch-analysis-weatherman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">normalized by leaps and bounds<\/a> but\u2014with so much money being wagered on real sports\u2014is it an idea whose time has come and gone?
