It was deemed that the Lege had exceeded its remit by classifying DFS as a game of skill, not of chance. New York is a leading market for DFS, and operators like <strong>DraftKings<\/strong> and <strong>FanDuel<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17142\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Draft-Kings-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Draft-Kings-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Draft-Kings-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Draft-Kings.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>thought they had reached an accommodation with the Empire State. The state gaming commission is defying the court by continuing to maintain its position that DFS is a skill game. The ruling, nonetheless, makes New York one of six states where DFS is illegal. As <em>Fox Business<\/em> reports, &#8220;Some states, such as the gambling capital of America, <strong>Nevada<\/strong>, have no fantasy operations because it is seen as gambling and as a gambling operation, a company such as DraftKings would require a state gambling license.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gambling debts were the source of DFS&#8217; Empire State setback. Losses incurred playing fantasy sports were <!--more-->the impetus for <strong>Stop Predatory Gambling<\/strong> to sue at the behest of four disordered gamblers. National Director <strong>Les Bernal<\/strong> called DFS &#8220;consumer financial fraud,&#8221; continuing that\u00a0This isn&#8217;t about people having a <strong>Super Bowl<\/strong> office pool. This is about state government cheating and exploiting people, contributing to the huge debt culture in the state.&#8221; While the state is undecided about an appeal, FanDuel is moving ahead with one, saying that it will be business as usual in the meantime.<\/p>\n<p>* Gerontic <strong>Maine<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Janet Mills<\/strong> (D) has been overriden by the state Senate in her attempt to veto sports betting. Five Republicans joined 15 Democrats in stomping Mills, who now must hope for less bipartisanship <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-25808\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Mills-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Mills-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Mills-110x150.jpg 110w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Mills-768x1046.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Mills-752x1024.jpg 752w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Mills.jpg 842w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>in the House. The legislation, a mashup of seven bills, would enable sports betting at tribal venues, private-sector ones, horse tracks and OTBs. Casino operators like <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> and <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong> opposed it, saying they should be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2020\/02\/06\/maine-senate-overrides-mills-on-legalized-sports-betting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">double down on their monopoly<\/a> on casino gambling, something Sen. <strong>Louis Luchini<\/strong> (D) persuaded his colleagues to resist. \u201cWhere there is brick and mortar there is investment,\u201d responded casino supporter Sen. <strong>Scott Cyrway<\/strong> (R). Maine lawmakers expect $5 million a year in tax revenue from sports wagering, which has generated $17 million in handle in its first legal month in neighboring <strong>New Hampshire<\/strong>. The bill goes to the House this week.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"148\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein.jpg 148w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein-111x150.jpg 111w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 148px) 100vw, 148px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>* It only took five years but <strong>Rob Goldstein<\/strong> has been licensed as COO and president of <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong>. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/3-gaming-leaders-win-recommendation-for-licensing-in-nevada-1952003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clerical oversight<\/a>&#8221; is blamed for the delay. Also approved was new <strong>Affinity Gaming<\/strong> CEO <strong>Mary\u00a0Elizabeth Higgins<\/strong>. Congratulations to both but especially to Higgins, who brings needed diversity to the executive suites.<\/p>\n<p>* Advocating a &#8216;clean&#8217; bill as the best way to approach sports betting in <strong>Connecticut<\/strong>, state Rep. <strong>Joe Verrengia<\/strong> (D) has proposed a counterpoint to state Sen. <strong>Cathy Osten<\/strong>&#8216;s tribes-only approach. Verrengia would deal the tribes, OTB operator <strong>Sportech Venues<\/strong> and the state lottery all into sports wagering\u2014and only that. (Osten wants to give <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14304\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Foxwoods-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Foxwoods-logo.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Foxwoods-logo-150x102.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>and <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> Internet gambling and an online lottery.) Explained Verrengia,\u00a0\u201cIn the past, we\u2019ve approached this in a holistic way through comprehensive gaming policy, but given the number of hurdles and how problematic it is to get anything passed beyond sports betting, I think we should stick to sports betting.\u201d Easier said than done. The tribes would have to back down from their insistence on exclusivity and <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> would want to be dealt into the game, which Verrengia would restrict to in-state stakeholders. As for that proposed, $675 million MGM casino in <strong>Bridgeport<\/strong>, it may have tiptoed away. Says Mayor <strong>Joe Ganim<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cMGM\u2019s been very quiet,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* &#8220;Good faith&#8221; got <strong>MGM Grand Detroit<\/strong> out of an appeals-court scrape involving &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/US\/2020\/02\/05\/Detroit-casino-not-liable-after-6-million-is-gambled-away\/8151580929918\/?lh=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the worst gambler on the planet<\/a>,&#8221; <strong>Gino Accettola<\/strong>, who blew through $6 million in money from investors that was supposed to have been spent on <strong>Michigan<\/strong> and <strong>Florida<\/strong> construction projects. Instead, Accettola gambled it away at MGM, which was not found liable, even though its due diligence left something to be desired when extending him credit. (Accettola is currently doing time for unrelated felonies.) <a href=\"http:\/\/publicdocs.courts.mi.gov\/OPINIONS\/FINAL\/COA\/20200204_C345284_34_345284.OPN.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wrote the court<\/a>, &#8220;a background check would have revealed that Accettola had no employment or other source for the millions he used to gamble at defendant&#8217;s casino.\u00a0It also would have revealed that he had a criminal history involving identity theft and larceny by conversion, among other crimes, and that he had served significant time in prison.&#8221; Whoops.<\/p>\n<p>On a brighter note, MGM Grand Detroit just opened the first in-casino pharmacy in Michigan, serving both employees and the community at large. That&#8217;s an example worth emulating.<\/p>\n<p>* Protesting <em>Playboy<\/em> bunnies at a casino trade show may be taking things a little too far. But England&#8217;s <strong>Gambling Commission<\/strong> may also have been out of the office when the <strong>#MeToo<\/strong> movement happened and hasn&#8217;t checked back in. Its response to reports of scantily clad models at the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/resorts_casino_flapper-189x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/resorts_casino_flapper-189x300.jpg 189w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/resorts_casino_flapper-94x150.jpg 94w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/>prestigious <strong>ICE<\/strong> show was to call for self-regulation. &#8220;It is a matter for the organizers to enforce that code,&#8221; yawned new commission supremo <strong>Neil McArthur<\/strong>. His predecessor, <strong>Sarah Harrison<\/strong> said, &#8220;A woman from the gambling industry is <strong>Britain<\/strong>&#8216;s highest paid boss. Yet from walking around the exhibition you wouldn&#8217;t know this. Instead you saw men representing their companies wearing expensive tailored suits whilst their female colleagues were expected to wear nothing more than swimsuits.&#8221; One attendee, <strong>Flavio Grasselli<\/strong>, was unfazed by the fuss, likening attending ICE to geeking out a sci-fi convention or something of that ilk. &#8220;Gambling is linked with the forbidden,&#8221; he argued, likening female sexuality to &#8220;the sensuality of the roulette wheel.&#8221; That&#8217;s a new one. Anyway, we haven&#8217;t seen any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-51390091?intlink_from_url=&amp;link_location=live-reporting-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pictures from ICE<\/a> which should raise umbrage, so we&#8217;d advise everyone to take a chill pill until the show leaves town.<\/p>\n<p>* You&#8217;ve heard of historic racing. Now here comes historic basketball, in which you gamble\u00a0on a 60-sample of an <strong>NBA<\/strong> game. It&#8217;s only offered online in <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> at present but, <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/hoop-dreams-historic-basketball-games-head-to-new-jersey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">with myriad side bets<\/a>, it promises to be a good deal more intricate than wagering on which horse finishes first.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong> reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-health-melco-resorts\/casino-operator-melco-drops-crown-deal-as-coronavirus-hits-travel-idUSKBN2002RQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plans to liquidate its existing, 10% stake<\/a> in <strong>Crown Resorts<\/strong>, completing a Crown exit strategy.
