{"id":26105,"date":"2020-02-14T10:06:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T18:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=26105"},"modified":"2020-10-16T07:09:10","modified_gmt":"2020-10-16T15:09:10","slug":"mgms-past-distinguished-future-cloudy-broken-winds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/mgms-past-distinguished-future-cloudy-broken-winds\/","title":{"rendered":"MGM&#8217;s past distinguished, future cloudy; Broken Winds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, while noting <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong>&#8216;s impending departure, we were remiss in noting some of his <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Jim-Murren.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Jim-Murren.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Jim-Murren-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>accomplishments. On Murren&#8217;s 2008-20 watch, the company became synonymous with diversity, environmentalism, LEED certification and community outreach. With becoming modesty, Murren always deflected credit toward &#8220;the company&#8221; and its &#8220;team members,&#8221; whose accomplishment were showcased in the weekly &#8220;MGM Minute&#8221; (a viral innovation of the Murren administration). We thank him for\u00a0that.<\/p>\n<p>Of course you can&#8217;t say &#8220;viral&#8221; these days <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/donaco-flags-layoffs-as-coronavirus-hits-vietnam-biz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">without thinking of coronavirus<\/a>, which has caused MGM to pull all its 2020 earnings estimates. MGM derives 27% of its revenue from <!--more--><strong>Macao<\/strong>, meaning it&#8217;s getting a big, fat zero where a quarter of its income used to be\u2014and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/mgm-murren-to-leave-macau-closure-cost-us1-5mlnday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paying $1.5 million a day<\/a> for the privilege. (Add <strong>MGM Cotai<\/strong> to the list of hotels that have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/mgm-macau-hotel-operations-suspended-temporarily-govt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shuttered by the government<\/a>.) <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-22781\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MGM-Cotai-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MGM-Cotai-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MGM-Cotai-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MGM-Cotai.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Gaming revenue there was already troubled, trending down 8.5% in 4Q19. Nor has less baccarat play in Macao translated to more in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>, where profits from high rollers were down $100 million last year. Meanwhile, a new sports-betting partnership with <strong>GVC Holdings<\/strong> may not be in the black until 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-12\/mgm-s-longtime-ceo-murren-to-step-down-virus-weighs-on-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">The shock on Wall Street<\/a> was sufficient for one brokerage, <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong>, to suspend its coverage of MGM\u2014and there were probably others. MGM blamed an &#8220;unpredictable&#8221; outlook for its earnings revision. Adds <em>Bloomberg<\/em>, &#8220;To placate investors, MGM announced a <span class=\"\" data-value=\"3000000000\" data-original=\"$3 billion\" data-symbol=\"$\">$3 billion<\/span> share repurchase, including a <span class=\"\" data-value=\"1250000000\" data-original=\"$1.25 billion\" data-symbol=\"$\">$1.25 billion<\/span> tender offer that started Thursday morning, and raised its dividend 15%. The company set the price range of the offer at <span class=\"\" data-value=\"29\" data-original=\"$29\" data-symbol=\"$\">$29<\/span> to <span class=\"\" data-value=\"34\" data-original=\"$34\" data-symbol=\"$\">$34<\/span> a share.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Murren, who indicated he would continue to consult on <strong>Japan<\/strong> (a good idea), accentuated the positive.\u00a0\u201cOur growth areas of sports betting, Japan and entertainment have never looked better,\u201d he said. \u201cOur bench of management talent is deep.\u201d True that.<\/p>\n<p>* So much for a grand compromise on <strong>Connecticut<\/strong> sports betting. Both <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> and <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theday.com\/local-news\/20200211\/tribes-stick-to-exclusivity-claim-at-forum-on-sports-betting-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">asserted their claim<\/a> of exclusivity at a recent forum. Characterizing sports betting as a casino <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20636\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Verrengia-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Verrengia.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Verrengia-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>game (we disagree but we also digress), they threatened to yank their 25% share of slot winnings from state coffers. The tribes were challenged by pro-compromise state Rep. <strong>Joe Verrengia<\/strong> (D), who also chastised them for stalling on <strong>Tribal Winds<\/strong> in <strong>East Windsor<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cLitigation is to be expected, but you promised to proceed,\u201d Verrengia said, alluding to MGM. &#8220;Despite assurances, you haven\u2019t moved forward.\u00a0&#8230; The state\u2019s losing $25 million a year without East Windsor.\u201d Tribal lawyer <strong>Aaron Bayer<\/strong> responded that none of the anti-Tribal Winds lawsuits have been successful, which only begs Verrengia&#8217;s question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mashantucket Pequot<\/strong> Chairman <strong>Rodney Butler<\/strong>, intervened to say Tribal Winds would have to redo its zoning process (which could take five months), followed by 1.5 to two years of construction, no inception date given. The Mohegan and Pequots took differing paths with legal weed, with the Mohegans wanting no part of it and the Pequots asking the Lege for\u00a0\u201cthe ability to get involved.\u201d Said Butler,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s extremely hypothetical.\u201d Smoke &#8217;em when you&#8217;ve got &#8217;em, Rod.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong> has been cleared by <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> regulators to take over Caesars Entertainment, bringing with it <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Philadelphia<\/strong>. It occurs to us that the absurd horseracing subsidy is actually a pretty sweet deal for racinos like Harrah&#8217;s. They pay the state in <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11814\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/harrahs-chester-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/harrahs-chester-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/harrahs-chester-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/harrahs-chester.jpg 587w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>theory but the money comes right back to them. No wonder companies like Caesars and <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> have doubled down on racinos in the Keystone State. Speaking of the ponies, a <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong> joint venture, $200 million <strong>Oak Grove Racing, Gaming &amp; Hotel<\/strong> is about to open in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong>. It will have 1,200 slots, er, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theleafchronicle.com\/story\/news\/local\/clarksville\/2020\/02\/11\/oak-grove-racing-gaming-hotel-preparing-open-2020\/4693179002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">historical racing machines<\/a>. It will also include a track where actual horses will race, although that&#8217;s more and more of a loss-leader these days. An Oak Grove without HRMs is economically unthinkable.<\/p>\n<p>* Congratulations to <strong>Wynncore<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.forbestravelguide.com\/forbes-travel-guide-unveils-its-2020-star-award-winners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">for being added<\/a> to Forbes&#8217; collection of five-star hotels. A recent room makeover may have pushed <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> over the top, and the spa and <strong>Wing Lei<\/strong> restaurant clearly helped. How do you qualify for five-star status? The <em>Daily Mail<\/em>&#8216;s <strong>Neil Simpson<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/travel\/travel_news\/article-7986875\/Sparkling-secrets-five-star-luxury-worlds-glamorous-hotels-earn-stripes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lays out the criteria<\/a>. For instance, &#8220;Gone are the days when a hotel could claim five-star status just for having a pool or spa. Today the pool and spa staff must also be the best trained and most welcoming in the business.&#8221; Sounds like Vegas to us.<\/p>\n<p>* It was tribes 3, <strong>Maverick Gaming<\/strong> 0 in <strong>Washington State<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>House Appropriations Committee<\/strong>\u00a0as it overwhelmingly voted to send a sports-betting bill to the House floor. The winning bill (of three) restricts wagering to the state&#8217;s 29 tribal casinos. Two rival bills that would have<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-26107\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Drew-Stokesbary-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Drew-Stokesbary-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Drew-Stokesbary-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Drew-Stokesbary.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 134px) 100vw, 134px\" \/>dealt in the state&#8217;s 44 card rooms (19 of which are owned by Maverick) went down to defeat. State Rep. <strong>Drew Stokesbary<\/strong> (R), the ranking Republican on the committee called the outcome &#8220;a reasonable middle ground,\u201d adding, &#8220;It permits adults who are responsible to engage in an activity that doesn\u2019t harm other people. But it doesn\u2019t make it so prevalent or so pervasive in our society that we as a legislature have to worry about the morality and ethics of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* The <strong>Las Vegas Valley<\/strong> has been named by <strong>Zillow<\/strong> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunset.com\/home-garden\/best-housing-markets?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Sunset%20Home%20%26%20Garden%20Newsletter%20%28Actives%29%202020-02-13&amp;utm_content=Final&amp;utm_term=SUN%20Outdoor%20Living%20NL:%20Actives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the fifth-best housing market<\/a> in the West. Home values have appreciated most in the <strong>College Park<\/strong> neighborhood (8%) and in <strong>Blue Diamond<\/strong> (8%) to the south.
