{"id":26140,"date":"2020-02-19T08:37:52","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T16:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=26140"},"modified":"2020-02-19T11:12:11","modified_gmt":"2020-02-19T19:12:11","slug":"crime-pays-dream-ing-big","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/crime-pays-dream-ing-big\/","title":{"rendered":"Crime pays; Dream-ing big"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> granted executive clemency to four convicted criminals, three of whom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/news\/nation\/2020\/02\/18\/trump-grants-clemency-high-profile-individuals-including-blagojevich-milken-and-kerik\/r9mzqGcTHUbs5Bl36NL4LN\/story.html?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">had\u2014surprise!\u2014casino connections<\/a>. <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong>&#8216;s money man <strong>Michael Milken<\/strong> benefited from the support not of the tainted Wynn <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-24334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trump-191x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trump-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trump-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trump.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/>but of <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>. (<strong>Mirage Resorts<\/strong> was financed with junk bonds, you may recall.) Former <strong>San Francisco 49ers<\/strong> owner <strong>Edward DeBartolo<\/strong> not only failed to report being shaken down for a bribe by then-<strong>Louisiana<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Edwin Edwards<\/strong> (D), he <em>paid<\/em> the bribe (and got a casino license in return). Yesterday&#8217;s DeBartolo reprieve\u00a0should embolden crooked politicians everywhere, as should that of ex-<strong>Illinois<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Rod Blagojevich<\/strong> (D), the man who ratcheted the state&#8217;s top tax rate for casinos to a kleptocratic 75% and tried to sell <strong>Barack Obama<\/strong>&#8216;s vacated senate seat. He also tried to extort $100,000 from a racetrack owner in exchange for extending horse racing subsidies. Whatta guy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2018He\u2019s been in jail for seven years over a phone call where nothing happens\u2014over a phone call which he <!--more-->shouldn\u2019t have said what he said, but it was braggadocio, you would say,&#8221; Trump bloviated.\u00a0\u2018\u2018I would think that there have been many politicians\u2014I\u2019m not one of them, by the way\u2014that have said a lot worse over the telephone.\u2019\u2019 We&#8217;re solidly with Illinois&#8217; five Republican congressmen, who opposed the commutation\u00a0on the grounds that it&#8217;s imperative to take\u00a0\u2018\u2018a strong stand against pay-to-play politics.\u2019\u2019 The Trump message to politicians and others with power over gaming licenses is, in <a href=\"https:\/\/politics.theonion.com\/rod-blagojevich-trying-to-sell-presidential-commutation-1837076931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Blagojevich<\/a>&#8216;s immortal words, &#8220;you don\u2019t just give it away for nothing.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of crooked politicians, we reported yesterday that <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> state Rep. <strong>David Nangle<\/strong> (D) was arrested for &#8220;a systematic pattern of theft and fraud.\u201d This included allegedly pilfering his campaign coffers of 70 dimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/02\/18\/metro\/state-rep-david-nangle-arrested-federal-charges\/?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=metroheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to underwrite his gambling habit<\/a>. (We <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-26141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Nangle.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Nangle.jpeg 183w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Nangle-100x150.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/>can see the &#8216;diminished capacity&#8217; defense being formulated already.) Although Internet gambling is illegal in the Bay State, Nangle did it anyway, as well as patronizing casinos in <strong>Rhode Island<\/strong>, <strong>Connecticut<\/strong> and his home state. Yesterday&#8217;s 19 federal counts have been upped to 28,\u00a0wire fraud, bank fraud, making a false statement to a bank and filing false tax returns. Nangle has been ordered by a judge to stop gambling. They&#8217;d better confiscate his computer, then.<\/p>\n<p>Nangle&#8217;s misdeeds date back to at least 2009. They supposedly include fraudulently renting cars to drive to the casinos (Nangle did nothing by half measures, it would appear) and blaming his bad credit on his ex-wife. \u00a0The defaulted loans in question were apparently spent on gambling, too. Reported the <em>Boston Globe<\/em>, &#8220;Authorities said he reported consulting work he never did, claimed phony business expenses and fake charitable contributions, and inflated mileage and commuting expenses.&#8221; After stiffing a contractor for work on Nangle&#8217;s home, the <strong>House Ethics Committee<\/strong> member allegedly made it up by awarding the individual &#8220;lucrative,&#8221; state-funded work. Nangle told a confederate he would\u00a0&#8220;take the blame if anything happens.\u201d We&#8217;d say something happened.<\/p>\n<p>* There&#8217;s a new, 21-story hotel planned for the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> by <strong>Dream Hotel Group<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsmag.com\/Industry\/News\/Details\/90375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in conjunction<\/a> with <strong>Contour<\/strong> and <strong>Shopoff Realty Investments<\/strong>. The 450-<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26143\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/DREAM-LV-High-Angle-01_DLR-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/DREAM-LV-High-Angle-01_DLR-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/DREAM-LV-High-Angle-01_DLR-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/DREAM-LV-High-Angle-01_DLR-768x438.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/DREAM-LV-High-Angle-01_DLR-1024x584.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>room Dream hotel would have seven &#8220;nightlife and dining venues,&#8221; three &#8220;feature&#8221; restaurants, a casino, plus an &#8220;epic&#8221; rooftop pool, all catering to a &#8220;luxury lifestyle.&#8221; Construction is set to begin in a year, with opening planned for 2023, by which time we&#8217;ll probably still be waiting for <strong>Resorts World Las Vegas<\/strong>. This solves the mystery of why 38 acres across from <strong>Mandalay Bay<\/strong> went back on the market. Our surmise that they would become <strong>Allegiant Stadium<\/strong> overflow parking was off by a mile.<\/p>\n<p>Dream seems to have all the money in the bank, thanks to Contour and Shopoff, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamhotelgroup.com\/development\/default-en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">it solicits investors<\/a> on its Web site\u2014and is more of a franchisor than a developer\u2014and we can&#8217;t help but wonder how it&#8217;s going to amortize a 21-story tower with only 450 suites. (We guess that&#8217;s where the casino comes in.) Those room rates are going to be astronomical. According to the official announcement, <strong>DLR Group<\/strong>&#8216;s design &#8220;will feature a diverse mix of dramatic venues distributed vertically throughout the composition roof decks and terraces of the hotel design. The undulating contemporary design will feature a lustrous glass and metal fa\u00e7ade, boasting stylistic details such as radiused corners, spacious double-height terraces, oversized windows and a unique aerodynamic character influenced by its context.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why a new hotel and why now? Contour CEO\u00a0<strong>David Daneshforooz<\/strong> says\u00a0\u201cThere is no shortage of mega-resorts in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>, but there is a lack of boutique hotels that offer a more intimate curated experience.\u201d Unless you&#8217;re <strong>The Cromwell<\/strong>, small hasn&#8217;t been beautiful in Las Vegas for a long <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-18873\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/stadium_renderings-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/stadium_renderings-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/stadium_renderings-150x79.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/stadium_renderings.jpg 653w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>time. Added backer <strong>William Shopoff<\/strong>, &#8220;this location won\u2019t just be close to the action\u2014it will be the heart of it, especially with the [<strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>] <strong>Raiders<\/strong> games within a few miles.\u201d Dream PR claims the location is &#8220;two short blocks&#8221; from <strong>Allegiant Stadium<\/strong>, except that anybody who&#8217;s lived in Sin City knows there&#8217;s no such thing as a &#8220;short&#8221; block in <strong>Clark County<\/strong>. Expect a bit of a hike on game days. However, high rollers can take comfort in the fact that Dream will be &#8220;adjacent&#8221; to the private-jet terminal at <strong>McCarran International Airport<\/strong>. So will this be the next <strong>Lucky Dragon<\/strong> or the new Cromwell? Only time will tell.<\/p>\n<p>* If your Vegas visit wasn&#8217;t complete without dinner at <strong>Olives<\/strong>, we have glad tidings for you. The <strong>Todd English<\/strong> eatery, late of <strong>Bellagio<\/strong> (where it made way for\u2014shudder!\u2014<strong>Spago<\/strong>) <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/2\/18\/21141796\/todd-englishs-olives-returns-las-vegas-fall-2020-virgin-hotel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will turn up again<\/a> at the <strong>Virgin Hotel<\/strong> when it reopens. A <strong>Hugh Jackman<\/strong> coffee house will also be part of the new Virginity. In our opinion, <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/maps\/best-downtown-las-vegas-fremont-east-dining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">if you really want fine dining<\/a>, then head <strong>Downtown<\/strong>, for a more authentic (and varied) experience.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jottings<\/strong><\/em>: The good news for <strong>Macao<\/strong> is that casinos are expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/macao-casinos-set-reopen-shuttered-amid-coronavirus-outbreak\/story?id=69029495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reopen tomorrow<\/a>. The bad news is that it comes too late to save a February in which revenues are expected to plummet 80% &#8230; British betting exchange <strong>Matchbox<\/strong> has had its license suspended, for undisclosed <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26142\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Chao.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Chao.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Chao-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>reasons &#8230; Transportation Secretary <strong>Elaine Chao<\/strong> awarded $34 million in federal grants to five <strong>Nevada<\/strong> airports, including some di\u00f1ero to <strong>North Las Vegas<\/strong> for an unspecified study. <strong>Reno<\/strong> got $31 million-plus &#8220;to fund rebuilding a runway and a taxiway and [for] repairing runway lighting&#8221; &#8230; <strong>Alaska<\/strong> may finally become gambling-friendly. Gov. <strong>Mike Dunleavy<\/strong> (R) is exploring the possibilities of a lottery and sports betting &#8230; <strong>Colorado<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Limited Gaming Control Commission<\/strong> will issue sports-betting licenses Feb. 20. As many as seven could be handed out &#8230; Now there are six: <strong>Oklahoma<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Quapaw Nation<\/strong> has joined five other tribes that are dickering with Gov. <strong>Kevin Stitt<\/strong> (R) &#8230; Illinois sports betting will be up and running in time for <strong>March Madness<\/strong>, promises Gov. <strong>J.B. Pritzker<\/strong> (D).
