Fears of its spread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/02\/24\/business\/dow-sinks-more-than-900-points-early-trading\/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hit U.S. stock markets hard<\/a>, with the <strong>Dow Jones<\/strong>\u00a0tumbling 840 points, ceding all 2020 gains. Overseas <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Money.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Money.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Money-125x150.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>bourses are taking it hard, too, worse than American ones. Like <strong>Ron Swanson<\/strong> on <em>Parks &amp; Recreation<\/em>, investors are putting their money in gold. Airlines, computer companies, even shoe manufacturers are preparing for their bottom lines to catch the flu. Oil prices are down 4.5% (rare good news for consumers) but your overseas purchases\u2014like that <em>Alpine Symphony<\/em> CD I just ordered from <strong>Amazon<\/strong>\u2014are going to take longer. While most of the infection is confined to <strong>China<\/strong>, some 79,000 cases have been chalked up worldwide. So bad is the situation that a Thursday Chinese bulletin of <!--more-->394 new cases and 114 deaths was taken as good news. Thanks, <strong>Beijing<\/strong>, for bungling the response to the outbreak. Oh, and guess who&#8217;s making out like bandits? Biotech and bleach.<\/p>\n<p>Casino gambling in Macao is described as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/visitation-a-mere-trickle-as-macau-casinos-reopen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a mere trickle<\/a>&#8221; following the 15-day ban. While 29 of 39 casinos chose to reopen, they did so with an <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17045\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Venetian-Macao-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Venetian-Macao-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Venetian-Macao-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Venetian-Macao.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>emaciated offering of all-important table games: roughly 1,800 of 6,754. Players per table are restricted to four, max, so as minimize risk of spreading germs, according to the <em>South China Morning Post<\/em>. Casino chips were cleaned on the spot. Similar operational curbs have been placed on slot machines, idling half of <strong>Venetian Macao<\/strong>&#8216;s 1,700 devices.\u00a0\u201cPreviously, even in the quiet hours, there would be some noise from people who were betting. No one\u2019s here,\u201d one player told the <em>SCMP<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Customers not only have to wear masks but subject themselves to temperature readings at entrances and exits. As a consequence, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/article\/3051571\/macau-casinos-reopen-after-coronavirus-shutdown-gamblers-keep-their\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many halls looked desolate<\/a>.&#8221; At venerable <strong>Casino Lisboa<\/strong>, not one VIP player <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1589\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Casino-Oceanus-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Casino-Oceanus-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Casino-Oceanus-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Casino-Oceanus.jpg 475w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>showed up. None of the 10 shuttered casinos\u2014such as <strong>Sands Cotai Central<\/strong> and <strong>Oceanus<\/strong>\u2014are among the enclave&#8217;s marquee properties. At least five junketeers\u2014including under-scrutiny <strong>Suncity Group<\/strong>\u2014are resuming operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven with the casinos reopening, there will still be a dearth of customers,\u201d wrote <strong>Sanford C. Bernstein<\/strong> analysts.\u00a0\u201cWe currently estimate that hotel occupancy in Macau is around 10 percent-15 percent, with some customers staying over since Chinese New Year. However, the suspension of group travel and IVS visa issuance eliminates the largest source of customers. Until the suspensions are lifted, most mainland Chinese customers will not be able to enter Macau.\u201d So you can see why casino reopening was called an &#8220;empty gesture&#8221; by <strong>Nomura Institnet<\/strong> analyst <strong>Harry Curtis<\/strong>. Revenue declines are forecast at 80% for February and 50% in March.<\/p>\n<p>The ramifications could also extend to casino construction. <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> <strong>Securities<\/strong> predicts further delays to\u00a0<strong>Grand Lisboa Palace<\/strong>, in <strong>The Londoner<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>aka<\/em> Sands Cotai Central) and at <strong>Galaxy Macau Phase III<\/strong>. According to the\u00a0<strong>Macau Federation of Trade Unions<\/strong>, 53% of its members are worried about their <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20244\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Grand-Lisboa-Palace.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Grand-Lisboa-Palace.jpeg 252w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Grand-Lisboa-Palace-150x119.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/>job prospects. (<strong>Macau Gaming Staff Rights Association<\/strong> wants gloves issued to casino workers and for tableside drink service to be ceased.) They&#8217;re certain to be leaning heavily on a &#8220;special aid fund&#8221; that <strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>\u00a0set up for members of the tourist industry. Casino companies looking at cash-flow shortfalls of $127 million (<strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>), $307 million (<strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong>) and $87 million (<strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>) may not be so clement\u2014although displeasing City Hall is always a legitimate fear. In any event, stock analysts are kissing 2020 and its once-projected casino recovery goodbye and pinning their hopes on next year.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, coronavirus has redounded to the benefit of casinos in <strong>Singapore<\/strong>. Both <strong>Marina Bay Sands<\/strong> and <strong>Resorts World Sentosa<\/strong> will receive 10% tax breaks to compensate them for lost business. It&#8217;s an ill wind indeed that doesn&#8217;t blow somebody some good.<\/p>\n<p>* It&#8217;s a big day for sports betting. <strong>William Hill<\/strong> has accessed the <strong>Michigan<\/strong> market, thanks to a new partnership with the <strong>Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa &amp;\u00a0Chippewa Indians<\/strong>. William Hill will be the tribe&#8217;s exclusive sports and Internet-betting provider, in a &#8220;long-term&#8221; (duration unspecified) pact. William Hill will maintain terrestrial footholds at <strong>Turtle Creek Casino &amp; Hotel<\/strong> and at\u00a0<strong>Leelanau Sands Casino<\/strong>. The company hopes to have both operational in time for the next <strong>NFL<\/strong> season.<\/p>\n<p>In a near-simultaneous announcement, <strong>Scientific Games<\/strong> and the <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong> chain unveiled &#8220;a new multi-state, multi-product, multi-channel agreement.&#8221; The deal will provide SGMS&#8217; OpenGaming platform <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10418\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/scientific-games-corp-logo-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/scientific-games-corp-logo-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/scientific-games-corp-logo-150x73.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/scientific-games-corp-logo-1024x503.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/scientific-games-corp-logo.jpg 1862w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>to Nuggets in <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> and <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>, rolling out to other states that provide online betting, as it occurs. The OpenSports suite of applications has also been thrown into the deal, with an option to provide to retail locations in\u00a0New Jersey, <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> and <strong>Nevada<\/strong>.
