Me, I&#8217;m contemplating a trip back to <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> in the near future, so I&#8217;m working on my <em>sangfroid<\/em>. As one<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20982\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NY_NY_Hotel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NY_NY_Hotel.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NY_NY_Hotel-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>tourist told the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, &#8220;Fewer people means shorter lines.&#8221; I&#8217;m not sure the casinos see it that way. Then again, it would be nice if we didn&#8217;t have a repetition of their cavalier attitude toward the Great Recession. (&#8220;Shut up and play,&#8221; infamously counseled <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>.) For now there are no signs of a <strong>Macao<\/strong>-style mass avoidance of the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>, which speaks well to consumer confidence and the circumspection of local authorities. Still, as historian <strong>David G. Schwartz<\/strong> counsels, &#8220;The magnitude has yet to be seen.&#8221; And we&#8217;re already seeing downward pressure on room rates: A Sunday-night stay at the <strong>Flamingo<\/strong> has a base rate of $9 for <strong>Caesars Rewards<\/strong> members. At least Las Vegans don&#8217;t have to live in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/quarry-bay-monster-building?utm_source=Atlas+Obscura+Daily+Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=9be0f94643-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_06&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_f36db9c480-9be0f94643-64289113&amp;mc_cid=9be0f94643&amp;mc_eid=57524cd942\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">virus magnets like this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Said one cabbie,\u00a0\u201cI used to wait only around 25 minutes to pick people up at the airport. Recently, I\u2019ve been waiting <!--more-->45 minutes.\u201d The casino industry is taking a more proactive approach to healthy public spaces but &#8220;Those on the front lines\u2014housekeepers, janitors, managers, dealers, promoters\u2014have been told to implement stricter hygienic measures in a clandestine manner so as not to scare visitors.&#8221; Is the industry conducting itself with the necessary transparency? According to an <em>LAT<\/em> source, &#8220;secrecy in the name of protecting business interest has always remained a top priority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For the time being, Las Vegas can continue to bank on hardcore customers, whether it&#8217;s the man who likes smaller crowds anyway, to the slot player who boasts,\u00a0\u201cI can beat it! I can beat anything! I have a high metabolism.\u201d Let&#8217;s hope he&#8217;s right.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>, meanwhile, it appears to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/05\/business\/owners-mass-casinos-already-feeling-effects-coronavirus\/?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">business as usual<\/a> for <strong>Encore Boston Harbor<\/strong> and <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong> even though coronavirus manifested itself in that region\u00a0sooner. &#8220;Analysts say both companies have a lot of cash that they can use to help them during a <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-24221\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Encore-BH-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Encore-BH-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Encore-BH-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Encore-BH.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>downturn.&#8221; That&#8217;s good for planned capex at both properties. Some argue that the Bay State casinos will actually become <em>more<\/em> important to MGM and <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> as their <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/article\/the-china-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Macao revenues wither<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>SunTrust Robinson Humphrey<\/strong> analyst <strong>Barry Jonas<\/strong> is among those finding a silver lining, telling the <em>Boston Globe<\/em>,\u00a0\u201cThe spending is done.\u00a0Maybe there are plans down the road for some select expansions, but for now, I think the ramp likely has more to do with marketing campaigns, advertising approaches.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both companies are emphasizing their &#8220;highest standards for health and safety.\u201d Since coronavirus has been contained in Massachusetts to date, <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21582\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Springfield-3-300x172.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Springfield-3-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Springfield-3-150x86.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Springfield-3.png 538w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>the casinos have little to fear at the moment. Should the disease go wide, though, its&#8217;s Katy bar the door.\u00a0\u201cWhether that\u2019s schools, sporting events\u2015any sort of meeting places, I think we\u2019d have a lot more to worry about,&#8221; said Jonas.\u00a0&#8220;For now, we\u2019re not seeing that level of panic. But we need to monitor this closely to see if it gets worse from here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While we have not been fans of the federal government&#8217;s coronavirus-response priorities (more tax cuts?!?), we have to give an attaboy to <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> for his george gesture of donating $100,000 in presidential salary toward efforts to battle the outbreak. Here&#8217;s hoping other philanthropists step up to the plate. However &#8230; could a taxpayer-funded bailout of <strong>Trump International Las Vegas<\/strong> be in the works? Some think so.<\/p>\n<p>* Meanwhile, in flyover country, gambling revenues were up 5% last month in <strong>Illinois<\/strong>. There was an extra weekend day, aiding a $102 million gross. Also, it compares favorably with February 2019&#8217;s sickly -6.5%. (Enjoy it while you can, guys: March has *two* fewer weekend days than <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>last year.) Over one-third of the state&#8217;s revenue was booked by <strong>Rivers Casino Des Plaines<\/strong>, grossing $36 million and rocketing 21% upward. <strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong> eked out a 1.5% gain at <strong>Grand Victoria<\/strong>, coming in at $12 million. Only <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Metropolis<\/strong>\u2014vaulting 47% to $5.5 million\u2014was also revenue-positive. <strong>Empress Joliet<\/strong> ceded 4.5% to $8 million and <strong>Hollywood Aurora<\/strong> was down 4%, also to $8 million. <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Joliet<\/strong> slipped 5% to $13 million, while <strong>Par-A-Dice<\/strong> stumbled 13% to $5 million. <strong>Jumer&#8217;s Casino Rock Island<\/strong> was down 5% to $5 million, <strong>Argosy Belle<\/strong> slid 7% to $3 million and <strong>Casino Queen<\/strong> tumbled 11% to $6.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Maryland<\/strong> staged a rally of its own, jumping 10.5% to $151 million. <strong>MGM National Harbor<\/strong> led the field with $61 million, a 13% increase. Slots were up 11% and table win jumped 17%. <strong>Maryland Live<\/strong> grossed $55 million, a 19% leap, while <strong>Horseshoe Baltimore<\/strong> goes from bad to worse, its $18 <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Arundel-Mills-Casino-rendering1-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Arundel-Mills-Casino-rendering1-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Arundel-Mills-Casino-rendering1-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Arundel-Mills-Casino-rendering1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>million a 13% falloff. <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analysts were projecting outlying casinos to have a flat trajectory but they&#8217;re all outperforming expectations. <strong>Hollywood Perryville<\/strong> was up 10% to $7 million, while <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong>&#8216; little\u00a0<strong>Ocean Downs<\/strong> gained 4% to $6 million. Out west, <strong>Golden Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Rocky Gap Casino<\/strong> grossed $5 million, an 11.5% bump. Despite strong table win (up 18%), <strong>West Virginia<\/strong> casinos were looking at a 4% revenue decrease, as slots slid 8%. <strong>Charles Town Races<\/strong> bucked the trend, up 3% despite 6% less slot win, as it cleaned up at the tables, winning 49% more.
