Not much time, either. Late yesterday, the <strong>National <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25991\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/LVCVA-300x166.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/LVCVA-300x166.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/LVCVA-150x83.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/LVCVA-768x425.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/LVCVA.jpeg 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Association of Broadcasters<\/strong> pulled the plug on its April convocation, scheduled for the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>. &#8220;We knew that if we could not deliver on &#8230;\u00a0expectations, we would not move forward. More importantly, keeping the community safe and healthy is NAB\u2019s highest priority; therefore, we are deferring to the developing consensus from public health authorities on the challenges posed by coronavirus,&#8221; wrote CEO <strong>Gordon H. Smith<\/strong>, hinting at a possible online version of the NAB show. As convention cancellations go, this is a biggie and other dominos are now certain to topple.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wall Street<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/11\/business\/us-stock-futures-drop-dollar-weakens\/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tumbled into bear-market territory<\/a>, with markets plagued with uncertainty over what measures the federal government would take and how great they would be. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/12\/business\/us-stock-futures-plummet-after-trump-suspends-travel-europe-us\/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trading was halted today<\/a> for the second time this week.) It remains to be seen whether they will heed the advice of a high-ranking federal official who said,\u00a0<!--more-->\u2018\u2018This is not a financial crisis.\u00a0This just a temporary moment of time that we will overcome together as a nation and as a world.\u2019\u2019 Then again, the attending physician to the <strong>U.S. Congress<\/strong> projects a minimum of 70 million cases nationwide.\u00a0\u201cThe government probably should have been thinking about stimulus last month,\u201d said <strong>Invesco<\/strong> Chief Global Market Strategist <strong>Kristina Hooper<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cEvery day that passes makes the economic impact of coronavirus that much worse.\u201d <strong>J.P. Morgan Private Bank<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Patrick Schaffer<\/strong> predicted weeks of a &#8220;whiplash&#8221; market. Added <strong>Commonwealth Financial Network<\/strong> CIO <strong>Brad McMillan<\/strong>,\u00a0\u2018\u2018There\u2019s a real feeling that we don\u2019t know where this ends.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gaming stocks got hammered. As of this moment, <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> is -10%, <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> -20% (The Street obviously expects bad things for the Las Vegas locals market), <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> -21%, <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> -10%, <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MIrage-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MIrage-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MIrage-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MIrage.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong> -27% (!), <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> -15.5%, <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> -11% and <strong>Twin River Holdings<\/strong> -10%. Relatively unscathed was <strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>, down only 3%. One possible interpretation is that Macanese casinos are viewed as less of a risk at the moment than domestic ones. We know if we were Caesars shareholders we&#8217;d want greater compensation in light of Eldorado&#8217;s newly emaciated stock price.\u00a0An attendee at a March 5-8 conference at <strong>The Mirage<\/strong> has tested &#8220;presumptive positive&#8221; for coronavirus, making the Strip&#8217;s first megaresort also its first <strong>Covid-19<\/strong> &#8220;hot zone.&#8221; MGM\u00a0is sending out an appeal to other attendees of the affected <strong>Women of Power Summit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Farther afield, MGM&#8217;s <strong>Yonkers Raceway<\/strong> was closed Tuesday after a veteran trainer died of coronavirus. The track is only six miles from hot zone <strong>New Rochelle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>National Basketball Association<\/strong>, in a move of extreme gravity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/12\/sports\/nba-suspends-remainder-season-due-coronavirus-concerns\/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suspended its season<\/a> after a <strong>Utah Jazz<\/strong> player (believed to be R<strong>udy Gobert<\/strong>) tested positive for Covid-19. Aside from the tremendous <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15025\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/NBA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" height=\"210\" \/>ramifications for the sports world, this kneecaps the sports-betting industry (which just kicked off this week in <strong>Illinois<\/strong> and <strong>Michigan<\/strong>). That&#8217;s billions of dollars in handle down the tubes, although punters needing a placebo will always have daily fantasy sports. Where do large groups of people traditionally <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Newsom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Newsom.jpg 219w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Newsom-110x150.jpg 110w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/>congregate? You guessed it: casinos. As Newsom put it, &#8220;gatherings held in venues that do not allow social distancing of six feet per person should be postponed or canceled.&#8221; Sounds a lot like the precautions currently being taken in <strong>Macao<\/strong>. In further bad news for the resort industry, <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/11\/nation\/trump-says-he-plans-deliver-prime-time-address-nation-wednesday-coronavirus-pandemic\/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clamped down on all travel<\/a> between the U.S. and <strong>Europe<\/strong> for the next month due to the &#8220;foreign virus.&#8221; (Major aspects of the speech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/white-house-scrambles-clarify-key-035128244.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">were almost immediately retracted<\/a>.) Only the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Ireland<\/strong> are exempt, although some Trump critics say that the U.K. is where Covid-19 is ramping up the fastest now.<\/p>\n<p>Trump will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/trump-scraps-trip-to-colorado-nevada-amid-coronavirus-outbreak-2020-3?utm_source=yahoo.com&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">staying close to home<\/a> next week (including nixing a trip to <strong>Nevada<\/strong>, standing up <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>), and <strong>Tom Hanks<\/strong> and <strong>Rita <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10131\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/trump-desk-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/trump-desk-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/trump-desk-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/trump-desk.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Wilson<\/strong> may be wishing they did, after becoming coronavirus&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ozy.com\/presidential-daily-brief\/pdb-288213\/star-infection-288335\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">most famous victims<\/a> whilst overseas. Still, there are those who say the government is closing the door after the horse fled, such as <strong>Georgetown University<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Lawrence Gostin<\/strong>, who said more focus needed to placed on domestic ramifications, tweeting that coronavirus \u201cis already here; germs don\u2019t respect borders.\u201d Added <strong>CMC Markets<\/strong> <strong>Michael McCarthy<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cThe market judgement on that announcement is that it\u2019s too little too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2014a member of the highest-risk demographic, incidentally\u2014continues to urge tapping money normally set aside for entitlement programs but appears to have gone off his previous calls for tax relief for the leisure industry. That groan you heard was from the <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong>. Time will tell.\u00a0(A <strong>Civiqs<\/strong> poll shows that Baby Boomers are the demographic least worried about Covid-19, even though they are the most at risk. Since they are also casinos&#8217; bread-and-butter demographic this should be cause for concern, to put it mildly.)<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Kangwon Land<\/strong>, the only <strong>South Korea<\/strong> casino open to citizens, is bleeding red ink from coronavirus. Initially closed on Feb. 23 on a strictly precautionary basis, the casino has seen its shutdown extended from Feb. 26 to Feb. 29 to March 9 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/kangwon-flags-us67mln-lost-gaming-virus-closure-extended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and now to March 16<\/a>. It expects to lose approximately $70 million from the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>This just in<\/strong> &#8230; <strong>Brazil<\/strong> President <strong>Jair Bolsonaro<\/strong>, after calling coronavirus &#8220;a fantasy,&#8221; has tested positive for Covid-19. Normally we&#8217;d say &#8216;Karma&#8217;s a bitch&#8217; and leave it at that but he dined with Donald Trump and <strong>Mike Pence<\/strong> last Saturday at <strong>Mar-a-Lago<\/strong>, so we hope the <strong>White House<\/strong> has some testing kits handy. (Given the gravity of the crisis, should Trump and Pence even be in the same place at the same time?
