Cordish&#8217;s myopic push backfired, as Hogan simply extended the closings to more public venues. When business does return to some semblance of normal, Maryland casinos give us an idea of what we can expect: fewer seats at table games, fewer slots.<\/p>\n<p>Cordish employees will be paid for two weeks but then &#8230; ? Hogan&#8217;s edict is open-ended. As\u00a0<strong>Maryland Lottery &amp;\u00a0Gaming Control Agency<\/strong> spokeswoman <strong>Carole Bober Gentry<\/strong> said,\u00a0\u201cAs this situation evolves, <!--more-->the governor needs to remain flexible and, therefore, has not set dates or deadlines. He continues to take every precaution to help slow the outbreak of coronavirus, and is trying to balance the interests of the business community with the need for safety among the citizens of Maryland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a surrealistic exemption to the gaming ban, horse racing has continued, to empty grandstands, at <strong>Laurel Park<\/strong> and <strong>Rosecroft Raceway<\/strong>. It is said that this peculiar form of the sport of kings will continue &#8220;for the foreseeable future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Tribal casinos have had a somewhat ragged response to <strong>Covid-19<\/strong>. In <strong>Wisconsin<\/strong>, <strong>Ho-Chunk Madison<\/strong> closed Tuesday morning, while <strong>Ho-Chunk Wisconsin Dells<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel3000.com\/hochunkgamingmadisoncloses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">waited until last night<\/a>. Giant <strong>Potowatomi Hotel &amp; Casino<\/strong>\u00a0also suspended business this week. Defying common sense, <strong>Oklahoma<\/strong> casinos <a href=\"https:\/\/okcfox.com\/news\/local\/national-indian-gaming-commission-announces-their-oklahoma-casinos-will-remain-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are staying open<\/a>. The rationale is that there have been no presumptive cases of <strong>Coronavirus<\/strong> among them. And the two biggies in <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11157\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Foxwoods-Milford-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Foxwoods-Milford-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Foxwoods-Milford-150x80.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Foxwoods-Milford.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Connecticut<\/strong>, <strong>Foxwoods Resorts Casino<\/strong> and <strong>Mohegan Su<\/strong>n, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcconnecticut.com\/news\/local\/foxwoods-mohegan-sun-to-close-to-help-curb-the-spread-of-coronavirus\/2239713\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have finally heeded<\/a> Gov. <strong>Ned Lamont<\/strong>&#8216;s call for a shutdown on 8 p.m. Tuesday. Foxwoods has never been closed in 28 years, Mohegan Sun never in 24.\u00a0\u201cThis is a humbling reflection on the ongoing public health crisis and it is the right decision,\u201d <strong>Mashantucket Pequot<\/strong> Chairman <strong>Rodney Butler<\/strong> said. Added <strong>Mohegan Tribe<\/strong> Chairman <strong>James Gessner<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cThis is a decision that was made to ensure all of our guests, team members, and our partners across Connecticut, especially in our local communities, remain safe. We are successful if the state is successful, and that\u2019s true in all facets, like public health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* Just before the good times ended, <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> sports books posted $330 million in handle last month, putting it in the top three sports-betting states in the U.S. All that handle translated into just under $5 million in revenue. A $3 million loss on the <strong>Super Bowl<\/strong> ($31 million in handle) was among the culprits. 89% of the wagering was done online, led by <strong>Valley Forge FanDuel<\/strong> sports book with $138.5 million. <strong>Rivers Casino Philadelphia<\/strong> had the most popular walk-up sports book.<\/p>\n<p>As <strong>PlayPennsylvania.com<\/strong> puts it with elegant understatement, &#8220;That revenue will be difficult to replace over the next few weeks.&#8221; Or, as analyst <strong>Dustin Gouker<\/strong> elaborates,\u00a0&#8220;Revenue from online casinos should help fill <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15715\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_-300x178.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_-150x89.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_.png 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>in the gaps, at least in part, while sportsbooks and land-based casinos feel the impact from COVID-19.\u00a0In <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>, online casino revenue already tops $50 million per month, and revenue could really leap forward in Pennsylvania, too. But it will be impossible to completely replace all the revenue lost from the sports world going dark &#8230;\u00a0In fact, Pennsylvania was on track to reach $4 billion in lifetime handle by the beginning of the <strong>NFL<\/strong> season. But it would take a quick recovery from the coronavirus outbreak to reach that milestone now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Could e-sports fill the vacuum? It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/digital\/as-traditional-sports-leagues-are-postponed-due-to-coronavirus-esports-could-fill-some-gaps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already happening <\/a>in <strong>China<\/strong>. Said e-sports boffin <strong>Rod &#8216;Slasher&#8217; Breslau<\/strong>, &#8220;Traditional sports leagues are shutting down, and people are staying home both for work and entertainment. Those two major things lead directly to watching and participating in the video game industry.\u201d He added,\u00a0\u201cCrowds in recent events have been awesome for e-sports, but e-sports have been playing without crowds for a long time. E-sports has a huge advantage in that they can continue competition.&#8221; After all, with TV networks having huge blocks of airtime intended for traditional sports suddenly vacant, e-sports is a not-uncreative way to fill them. We&#8217;re sure the <strong>DraftKings<\/strong> and <strong>FanDuel<\/strong>s of the world would be quick to capitalize. In the meantime, idled pro teams like the <strong>Phoenix Suns<\/strong> are playing\u2014get this\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/nba-premier-league-teams-are-simulating-cancelled-matc-1842347850\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">simulated games in video form<\/a>, streaming them on <strong>Twitch<\/strong>. We don&#8217;t know if you can legitimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/sports\/college\/asu\/2020\/03\/15\/arizona-state-defeats-usc-pac-12-championship-game-simulation\/5053535002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">bet on this<\/a> but are\u00a0sure someone will try.<\/p>\n<p>* Closure of <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>&#8216;s casinos for an indefinite period of time has idled 26,761 employees, who can only count on two weeks&#8217; pay to tide them over during the crisis. Judging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/atlantic-city-casinos-shutdown-workers-coronavirus-new-jersey-20200316.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on-the-scene reports<\/a>, the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Caesars-AC-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Caesars-AC-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Caesars-AC-150x106.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Caesars-AC.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>closing\u00a0may not have come a day too soon. Reports the <em>Philadelphia Inquirer<\/em>, &#8220;at <strong>Caesars<\/strong> on Sunday, gamblers were shoulder to shoulder around craps tables, and cocktail servers carried trays of drinks around the casino floors.&#8221; One of those employees\u00a0felt that Gov. <strong>Phil Murphy<\/strong> (D) was too slow to act:\u00a0\u201cWe are not six feet from customers. Why is our health unimportant?&#8221; <strong>Borgata<\/strong> is one of the casinos under fire for not acting sooner, after three employees in the table-game pit displayed Coronavirus symptoms. As late as Sunday some casinos were advising customers that it would be business as usual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we checked in, they said we\u2019d probably never close the casinos, because people wanted to gamble no matter what,\u201d said player <strong>Eleanor Whissen<\/strong>. There&#8217;s truth in that, according to podcaster <strong>Justin Vacula<\/strong>, who reported\u00a0\u201cPatrons are eager, however, playing before the impending closure,\u201d especially in the poker rooms.<\/p>\n<p>* In <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>, kudos to MGM Resorts International for being ahead of the curve, closing <strong>Beau Rivage<\/strong> and <strong>Gold Strike Tunica<\/strong> before being told to.\u00a0\u201cWe will work to mitigate the impact this will have on our employees, partners and communities,\u201dsaid MGM President <strong>Bill Hornbuckle<\/strong>. While Mississippi casinos are being evaluated by state regulators on a daily basis, the indefinite closure is flexible enough that hotels and restaurants can remain open. One casino, <strong>IP Biloxi<\/strong>, opted for a full shutdown however. Even card rooms in <strong>California<\/strong> are starting to get the message, albeit not in sufficient numbers.<\/p>\n<p>* &#8220;George&#8221; of the month is <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>, who is vowing to pay all his workforce for the duration of Gov. <strong>Steve Sisolak<\/strong>&#8216;s 30-day casino <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sheladelson1-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sheladelson1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sheladelson1-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sheladelson1.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>shutdown. &#8220;All full time and full time flex, and hourly Team Members will be paid a minimum of 32 hours a week, whether working on the schedule, working from home or are just not scheduled and confined to home,&#8221; stated <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong>. There will even be a special provision made for tipped employees. No unpaid furloughs will be mandated and health benefits will remain in place. Jobless claims in <strong>Nevada<\/strong>, meanwhile, have ballooned from 70,000 to 281,000.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Little Darlings<\/strong> strip club in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> has come up with its forms of economic stimulus. In addition to what are called &#8220;drive-thru lap dances&#8221; (Where&#8217;s the fun in that?) it&#8217;s offering &#8220;Nude hand sanitizer wrestling.&#8221; It may not be erotic but it&#8217;s sure to be salubrious.<\/p>\n<p>* For anybody out there who still doesn&#8217;t believe Covid-19 is serious business, <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> alone has 256 confirmed cases and another 1,168 people in quarantine. The Bay State has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/18\/metro\/day-care-centers-ordered-closed-coronavirus-continues-spread\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only been able to perform<\/a> 2,271 tests. The elite are self-quarantining on <strong>Martha&#8217;s Vineyard<\/strong> and <strong>Nantucket<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/18\/nation\/escaping-coronavirus-well-heeled-flee-nantucket-marthas-vineyard\/?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">somewhat to the resentment<\/a> of full-time residents.<\/p>\n<p>* Showing that Coronavirus is no respecter of party lines, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/03\/18\/politics\/mario-diaz-balart-coronavirus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it has infected both<\/a> Rep. <strong>Mario Diaz-Balart<\/strong> (R) and Rep. <strong>Ben McAdams<\/strong> (D).
