We admire Goodman normally but think she&#8217;s out of her depth here or, as a veteran travel-magazine editor put it, flying &#8220;totally in the face of good sense and reason.&#8221; Goodman should let Sisolak&#8217;s quarantine run its course. Even Rep. <strong>Dina Titus<\/strong> (D), who constituency is the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>, writes, &#8220;Avoid social gatherings of 10 people or more.&#8221; Speaking of Las Vegas, some of the best restaurants\u2014such as <strong>March\u00e9 Bacchus<\/strong>\u2014are hanging tough, offering take-out and curbside dining. Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/16J3DMCBOsSqaE1UYfvzd1zJYGaq6owuKZA8P08argAw\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a list in progress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Someone else who doesn&#8217;t seem to get it\u2014and who appears to think that it&#8217;s the federal government&#8217;s prerogative (which, thankfully, it isn&#8217;t) to close and reopen casinos is <!--more--><strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> President <strong>Bill Miller<\/strong>. His latest statement is so clueless I will let it speak for itself as much as possible:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn estimated 616,000 casino gaming employees are prevented from working because of the important health and safety decisions made by state governments. Nearly all (95%) of the country\u2019s 465 commercial <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-23114\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/miller.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/miller.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/miller-150x114.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>casinos, and three-in-four (76%) of the country\u2019s 524 tribal casinos, have shuttered their doors &#8230;\u00a0The federal government must act swiftly and comprehensively to get America\u2019s hospitality employees, and the small businesses that support them, back to work. Gaming employees, their families, and communities are bearing the brunt of this economic standstill and will continue to suffer if Congress and the administration don\u2019t take immediate action.\u00a0In total, these mass closures will rob the U.S. economy of $43.5 billion in economic activity if American casinos remain closed for the next eight weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Miller threatens <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, with the loss of tax revenue\u2014which is actually proportionate to business, of which there won&#8217;t be very much for a while. Tax relief is presumably Miller&#8217;s endgame but demanding that the feds reopen the casino industry <em>en masse<\/em> seems not only bizarre but irresponsible. Bill is a nice guy but he&#8217;s gone off the deep end.<\/p>\n<p>* Former <strong>Washington State Gambling Commission<\/strong> Chairman <strong>Chris Stearns<\/strong> defends the slowness to close of the state&#8217;s tribal casinos <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/former-washington-commissioner-commends-tribal-response-to-virus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in an interview<\/a> with <em>Global Gaming Business<\/em>. \u201cThe federal government can issue debt or a $5 billion bill and tack it onto the national debt,\u201d Stearns said. \u201cWith our city budgets, we\u2019re required by the state constitution to be budget-neutral\u2014we can\u2019t spend more than we have.\u201d Tribal casinos are looking to Washington, D.C. for financial relief. Says Stearns,\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re are in a tough situation. They rely a lot on gaming revenues to fund basic services. It\u2019s not an earnings or profit loss, or for shareholders. They\u2019re concerned about whether they can keep electricity and water running. Can they provide schools, school lunches and breakfasts?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Marriott International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Arne Sorensen<\/strong> yesterday called the present health crisis worse than <strong>9\/11<\/strong> and the <strong>Great Recession<\/strong> *combined.* He also had at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsmag.com\/Industry\/News\/Details\/91062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one helpful tip<\/a> for companies looking for budget cuts: \u201cWe spend $1 billion a year on marketing; why would we be marketing when people are social distancing and not traveling?\u201d He looks for drive-in markets to do better, convention-dependent hotels to do worse. As for getting federal aid for furloughed employees and for credit-liquidity underwriting,\u00a0\u201cWe are encouraged by the\u00a0constructive response and the speed at which these things are being considered.\u201d So far casino companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/news\/nation\/2020\/03\/19\/cash-payments-plan-sowing-division-among-republicans\/nBh65vOVhZKsKd2cjXA5yO\/story.html?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aren&#8217;t being included<\/a> among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/19\/business\/next-up-trumps-1-trillion-plan-stabilize-economy-hit-by-coronavirus\/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">competing stimulus packages<\/a> tussling for priority on <strong>Capitol Hill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Georgia<\/strong> Sen. <strong>David Perdue<\/strong> (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/state--regional-govt--politics\/perdue-loeffler-among-senators-whose-stock-trading-during-coronavirus-raises-questions\/YjEYsWqAVwZh52HTpl1EpL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dumped $165,000<\/a> in <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> stock after being briefed on the severity of <strong>Covid-19<\/strong>. \u201cFor Senator Perdue to betray his oath to Georgians by profiteering on an impending pandemic while downplaying the threat in public\u2014if that\u2019s not a crime, it should be,\u201d challenger <strong>Jon Ossoff<\/strong>\u00a0said. Speaking of Caesars, an <em>S&amp;G<\/em> source says it is using its enforced downtime to install many, <em>many<\/em> more self-check-in kiosks. Welcome to the Eldorado Era.<\/p>\n<p>* Nevada entrepreneur <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong> is offering to go into ventilator manufacturing if supplies run short. We have only one question: Why wait?<\/p>\n<p>* Good news for sports bettors: <strong>Major League Soccer<\/strong> has set May 10 for resumption of play. English football, meanwhile, remains on indefinite suspension. Hey, if you put money on <strong>Liverpool<\/strong> to win it all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/20\/sports\/silver-considers-nba-fundraising-exhibition\/?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you&#8217;re in like Flynn<\/a>. Bad news for <strong>Genting Group<\/strong>, though: Horse racing at <strong>Aqueduct Racetrack<\/strong> is suspended at least for this weekend after a worker tested positive for You Know What. And forget any bets on the <strong>Monaco Grand Prix<\/strong>. It&#8217;s been canceled.<\/p>\n<p>* Sorry to get your hopes up, <strong>Las Vegas Raiders<\/strong> fans: <strong>Tom Brady<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/20\/sports\/tom-brady-announces-hes-joining-tampa-bay-buccaneers\/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has signed with the<\/a> <strong>Tampa Bay Buccaneers<\/strong>.
