{"id":26487,"date":"2020-03-21T10:36:58","date_gmt":"2020-03-21T18:36:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=26487"},"modified":"2020-10-16T07:09:34","modified_gmt":"2020-10-16T15:09:34","slug":"the-cost-of-not-doing-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/the-cost-of-not-doing-business\/","title":{"rendered":"The cost of not doing business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saying &#8220;This is not the time to look for loopholes,&#8221; <strong>Nevada<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Steve Sisolak<\/strong> (D) doubled down on his quarantine order, threatening nonessential business that remain in business in defiance of his directive <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sisolak.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sisolak.jpg 210w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sisolak-150x143.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/>(and there have been some) to close up shop or face legal consequences. &#8220;I repeat, if you\u2019re not an essential business, I\u2019m using my power as governor under an emergency declaration to order you to close,\u201d Sisolak said in a teleconference. \u201cIf businesses defy this directive and stay open, state and local law enforcement will have the ability to treat this as a criminal act.\u201d\u00a0Local governments are given discretion as to what fine or other punishment to levy.<\/p>\n<p>Sisolak&#8217;s iron fist <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/3\/20\/21188809\/governor-criminal-nonessential-business-open-nevada-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was brought down by scofflaws<\/a> like <strong>Little Darlings<\/strong> strip club (whose activities were reported in <em>S&amp;G<\/em> earlier) and <strong>Downtown<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Heart Attack Grill,<\/strong> which thumbed its nose at public safety, proclaiming,\u00a0<!--more-->\u201cnon of this whimpy [<em>sic<\/em>] \u2018take out only\u2019 crap!\u201d (Other restaurants are finding ingenious, <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/3\/20\/21188318\/las-vegas-restaurants-grocery-stores-wholesale-meats-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remunerative and legal ways<\/a> to stay in business.) On the more-clement side, Sisolak eased rules for unemployment-insurance applicants and announced a special enrollment period for <strong>Silver State Health<\/strong>, adding, &#8220;If you need health insurance, do not wait.&#8221; At latest count Nevada had 109 <strong>Covid-19<\/strong> cases and two deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Panicky public officials\u2014like <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> Mayor <strong>Carolyn Goodman<\/strong>\u2014who are in a rush to get back to &#8216;normal&#8217; (calling for a slim, one-week quarantine, Heaven help us) need to read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.augustachronicle.com\/zz\/news\/20200320\/nih-chief-francis-collins-on-covid-19-best-response-one-people-would-find-too-drastic?rssfeed=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">this sobering interview<\/a> with <strong>National Institutes of Health<\/strong> Director <strong>Francis Collins<\/strong>. For instance, did you know that &#8220;even flat out for a vaccine means we\u2019re a year to a year-and-a-half away. And that would be breaking the record by a factor of three or so given how long it usually takes to get something fully ready to be distributed to the public.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A measured view was taken by <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong>, who wrote, &#8220;The recent wave of mandated casino closures is unprecedented and unfortunate, but necessary.&#8221; The downside, in part, are the fixed costs that casinos will have to carry, regardless. Added Greff, &#8220;Our conclusion is that larger cap stocks are better positioned in terms of liquidity to weather this downturn and survive, but if these trends persist for an elongated period (greater than a year), it will be troubling.&#8221; Ironically, <strong>Macao<\/strong>-exposed companies are expected to come out best, followed by Las Vegas Strip operators and then by regional ones. (We&#8217;re looking at you, <strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p>How much is it costing to pay the house nut? $13 million a day if you&#8217;re <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>, $7.5 million for <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong>, a <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-lion-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-lion-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-lion-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-lion-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-lion.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>surprisingly low $5.5 million for far-flung <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> (Penn incidentally, halted construction on <strong>Hollywood Casino Morgantown<\/strong> and <strong>Hollywood Casino York<\/strong> in Pennsylvania. Said CEO <strong>Jay Snowden<\/strong>, &#8220;We also believe it&#8217;s prudent to revisit any and all capital expenditure commitments in order to help preserve liquidity in light of the impact of COVID-19 on our business.&#8221;), $5 million for <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>, <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> $2 million and <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> $1 million, and less than a million for <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong> and <strong>Golden Entertainment<\/strong>. As for cash reserves, MGM has $4.4 billion, Sands over $8 billion, Penn $967 million, Wynn $3.6 billion, Station $551 million, Boyd $907 million, Golden $324 million and Churchill Downs $791 million. Keep in mind that fixed costs are 40% of the budget for a Strip resort and 30% of a regional casino.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to make sure money is flowing to your employees\u2014they\u2019re your critical resource,\u201d <strong>Innovation Capital<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Matt Sodl<\/strong> counseled <em>Global Gaming Business<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s hard to find and keep good people. So they\u2019re going to prioritize their employees, first and foremost. Casino operators will be stepping up and making sure their employees get paid. Most disturbingly, oddsmakers are only 82% convinced that the November election will take place on schedule. That&#8217;s uneasy food for thought.<\/p>\n<p>* There&#8217;s almost nothing left upon which to bet at <strong>DraftKings<\/strong>. However, hard times aren&#8217;t deterring the sports-wagering provider from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/20\/business\/despite-stock-market-collapse-draftkings-plans-go-public-next-month\/?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moving ahead with an IPO<\/a>. Mergers with <strong>SBTech<\/strong> and <strong>Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp<\/strong>. have to be completed first. This may be a good time to get in on the company, which lost $143 million last year and is debuting in a depressed stock market.<\/p>\n<p>* It arguably took awhile but <strong>Seminole Tribe<\/strong> casinos in <strong>Florida<\/strong> shut down at 6 p.m. yesterday. Said the tribe by way of explanation, &#8220;This decision was not taken lightly as Seminole Gaming employs nearly 14,000 Seminole Gaming team members in the state. The goal has been to protect their livelihood without jeopardizing public safety.
