Hornbuckle should have been Murren&#8217;s heir apparent but the exiled CEO had preferred to go on a candidate search. MGM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/mgm-resorts-international-announces-appointment-of-bill-hornbuckle-as-acting-chief-executive-officer-and-paul-salem-as-chairman-of-the-board-301027926.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained the coup d&#8217;etat<\/a> as &#8220;to provide <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-18630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Jim-Murren-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Jim-Murren.jpg 221w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Jim-Murren-111x150.jpg 111w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/>continuity of leadership for the Company,&#8221; which doesn&#8217;t make much immediate sense on the face of it. Replacing Murren as chairman of the board is <strong>Paul Salem<\/strong>, who chairs the real estate committee of the company, which has precious little real estate left to sell. Salem said,\u00a0&#8220;The nation is facing an unprecedented crisis, causing the travel and hospitality industry to grind to a near halt. It is clear that once the threat to the public health has subsided and we are ready to reopen our resorts and casinos, it will take an incredible effort to ramp back up.\u00a0We believe continued steady, skilled leadership is needed in this time of great upheaval and uncertainty. Bill is one of the most experienced operators in the business and <!--more-->we have confidence in his ability to bring this company back online.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The implication is certainly that that the <em>un<\/em>certainty over when Murren would actually leave was complicating the decisionmaking process. But did the outgoing CEO provoke the board&#8217;s ire by nixing an (ill-advised) <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Hornbuckle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Hornbuckle.jpg 190w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Hornbuckle-118x150.jpg 118w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/>$1.25 billion stock buyback? MGM&#8217;s going to need that cash now and Murren was wise to reserve it. Either way, Murren fell on his sword gracefully, saying,\u00a0&#8220;I fully support accelerating the planned leadership transition to help MGM Resorts address the rapidly changing environment.\u00a0I have great confidence in <span class=\"xn-person\">Bill Hornbuckle [<em>right<\/em>],&#8221; even though he snubbed him for CEO presumptive,<\/span>\u00a0&#8220;and the management team to lead MGM Resorts at this critical juncture, as we have together through numerous hardships of the past.&#8221; Hornbuckle has certainly earned his spurs, having been president of Mandalay Bay for four years and chief marketing officer for three. He&#8217;s also one of the last holdovers from the <strong>Mirage Resorts<\/strong> era, having helped open <strong>The Mirage<\/strong> in 1989, and been COO of both <strong>Treasure Island<\/strong> and <strong>Golden Nugget Laughlin<\/strong>. He even ran <strong>Caesars Palace<\/strong> for an interim in the Nineties. The MGM board has chosen well. Mr. Salem, however, hails from private equity, a sector whose influence on gaming has been disastrous and which loves nothing better than debt. Let&#8217;s hope Salem is an exception to that rule.<\/p>\n<p>As for Murren&#8217;s immediate future, <strong>Nevada<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Steve Sisolak<\/strong> (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/murren-exits-mgm-immediately\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">provided a soft (?) landing<\/a> by appointing the ex-CEO as leader of his <strong>Covid-19 Response, Relief &amp; Recovery Task Force<\/strong>. We can&#8217;t imagine a better choice.<\/p>\n<p>Coronavirus won&#8217;t be cheap for Silver State\u00a0casinos and hotels. <strong>Nevada Resort Association<\/strong> President <strong>Virginia Valentine<\/strong> forecasts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsmag.com\/Industry\/News\/Details\/91095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$38.9 billion in\u00a0lost business<\/a> from Sisolak&#8217;s 30-day quarantine. She says the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> is already out $2 billion in defunct convention traffic. In case you think Sisolak overreacted, we point to <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>, where\u2014after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/22\/nation\/coronavirus-testing-remains-crucial-states-response-baker-says\/?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">646 reported cases<\/a> and five deaths\u2014Gov. <strong>Charlie Baker<\/strong> (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/23\/metro\/coronavirus-latest-updates\/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is imposing a similar shutdown<\/a>. You don&#8217;t hear <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> CEO <strong>Matt Maddox<\/strong> complaining and rightly so. This disease is moving faster than governments can get out in front of it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6591\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/trump-lv_1857289_20_b-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/trump-lv_1857289_20_b-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/trump-lv_1857289_20_b-106x150.jpg 106w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/trump-lv_1857289_20_b.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lisettevoytko\/2020\/03\/22\/coronavirus-layoffs-airports-latest-to-shed-jobs-during-pandemic\/#32f67c4a7b9d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">unknown number of layoffs<\/a> have taken place at <strong>Trump International Las Vegas<\/strong>. To his credit, the resort&#8217;s namesake has not rushed to bail it out, saying,\u00a0\u201cI just don\u2019t know what the government assistance would be for what I have. I have hotels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Macao<\/strong>&#8216;s (at the time) seemingly draconian response to <strong>Coronavirus<\/strong> is now being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsmag.com\/Industry\/Blogs\/Details\/91092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">looked at as an exemplar<\/a>. The government has even put idled hotel rooms to good use, employing them house quarantined Macanese. As local hotelier <strong>Gert Noordzy<\/strong> writes, &#8220;Local residents are reassured that the authorities in Macau S.A.R have taken the crisis seriously from the beginning, based on lessons learned from SARS. We are watching in disbelief how <strong>Europe<\/strong>, <strong>Africa<\/strong> and the <strong>Americas<\/strong> have NOT used remaining time, resources and lessons learned to prepare for outbreaks locally.&#8221; For those who do, Heaven forbid, contract <strong>Covid-19<\/strong>, rest assured that there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/23\/metro\/she-attended-biogen-conference-got-miserably-sick-came-through-it\/?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">light at the end<\/a> of the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Sir Sol Kerzner<\/strong> has died at age 84. The <a href=\"https:\/\/finance-yahoo-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/finance.yahoo.com\/amphtml\/news\/sol-kerzner-1935-2020-visionary-195700518.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pioneering gaming mogul<\/a> was primarily active in <strong>South Africa<\/strong> and the <strong>Bahamas<\/strong>, which put him off the <em>S&amp;G<\/em> radar. However, he flirted heavily with <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> during the boom years, tentatively partnering with MGM for a &#8220;<strong>CityCenter II<\/strong>,&#8221; to be built at the north end of the Strip (land now owned by <strong>Phil Ruffin<\/strong>). Kerzner was a child prodigy who simultaneously pursued boxing and a seat in the <strong>Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra<\/strong>. His most famous accomplishment was the <strong>Sun City<\/strong> resort in South Africa, a gaming mecca built in what was then the middle of nowhere. Of Kernzer&#8217;s accomplishments <strong>Nelson Mandela<\/strong> said approvingly,\u00a0&#8220;He makes a difference everywhere he goes.&#8221; One of those places was <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong>, which got its footing thanks to finance from Sol and son <strong>Butch Kerzner<\/strong>. It was a risk that paid off handsomely.<\/p>\n<p>* It looks like convicted felon <strong>Harvey Weinstein<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2020\/03\/coronavirus-harvey-weinstein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has found a way to avoid<\/a> extradition to <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> for further prosecution of his misdeeds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MGM Resorts International canned CEO Jim Murren yesterday, while nobody was looking, promoting Bill Hornbuckle acting CEO and president.
