That&#8217;s the literal price of owning 432,000,000 shares of <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong>. Not that ill-fortune is crimping Sheldon&#8217;s lifestyle. He just put down $17 million on a <em>pied-a-terre<\/em> in <strong>Malibu<\/strong>, his ninth residence in the <strong>Colony<\/strong> gated community. Compared to the $138 million that <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong> wants for his SoCal mansion, we&#8217;d say Adelson is a real bargain hunter. Speaking of the Wynn family, <strong>Elaine Wynn<\/strong> lost a cool billion in the stock market, bringing her wealth down to $1.4 billion. The <strong>Fertitta Brother<\/strong>s are now worth $1.6 billion apiece, which they&#8217;ll need as the fallout of a <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> recession on <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> would be dire indeed. But the really ill-advised tycoon may be <!--more--><strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> plurality stockholder <strong>Carl Icahn<\/strong>, who has seen his net worth wither from $17 billion to $13 billion. Bad timing on that Caesars move, Uncle Carl.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;somewhat surreal&#8221; meeting between soon-to-be-ex-CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> and <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> took place last week, according to industry consultant <strong>Richard Schuetz<\/strong>. He said that Murren\u00a0\u201cwho is personally taking over $50 <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11976\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/James-Murren.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/James-Murren.jpg 290w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/James-Murren-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/>million out of [<strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>], went to the <strong>White House<\/strong> to meet a billionaire that bankrupted numerous casinos by not paying his lenders, to work on a plan to secure taxpayers\u2019 money.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/u-s-gaming-industry-to-dc-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Also somewhat surreal<\/a> were the priorities of the <strong>American Gaming Industry<\/strong>, which implored the Trump administration to summarily reopen the casino industry, health consequences be damned. We have to agree, though, that various forms of financial ill-health are cohabiting with <strong>Coronavirus<\/strong>. According to AGA figures, the 95% shutdown of the gaming industry is costing $74 billion in wages to front-line workers (who should be the top priority of any bailout), $41 billion in tax collections and $52 billion to casino-dependent small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. <strong>Dina Titus<\/strong> (D) took up the cudgels for the industry, emphasizing to Speaker of the House <strong>Nancy Pelosi<\/strong> (D) that &#8220;any long-term relief package must include the travel and tourism industry and the millions of <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14419\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Titus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Titus.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Titus-112x150.jpg 112w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/>workers whose jobs depend on it,\u201d according to Titus&#8217;s communications director. The <strong>Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers<\/strong> is also <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/suppliers-face-covid-19-fallout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">among the White House mendicants<\/a>. It&#8217;s business as usual for manufacturers in <strong>Nevada<\/strong> during Gov. <strong>Steve Sisolak<\/strong>&#8216;s quarantine but\u00a0\u201cWhen our customers shut down, they don\u2019t have as much money to spend on buying anything &#8230;\u00a0When we reach 30 days in Nevada, I don\u2019t pretend to think you\u2019re going to turn on the lights and there\u2019s going to be a return to business as usual. It\u2019s going to take some time,&#8221; said AGEM President <strong>Marcus Prater<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Gaming REITs may want in on the discussion, as they look at a possible, long-term loss of rent. Fortunately for them, they are protected from lease defaults. &#8220;They do have highly sophisticated lease structures, structured as cross-collateralized master leases (meaning all properties are under one lease, as opposed to multiple individual leases, essentially protecting <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Hollywood-Bangor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Hollywood-Bangor.jpg 298w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Hollywood-Bangor-150x85.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/>the REIT from the tenant picking and choosing to close bad assets),\u201d <strong>Fundamental Income<\/strong> co-founder\u00a0<strong>Alexi Panagiotakopoulos<\/strong> told <strong>Casino.org<\/strong>. However, by only lately diversifying out of the gaming sector, REITs like <strong>Gaming &amp; Leisure Properties Inc<\/strong>. are being pummeled on <strong>Wall Street<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cAmidst the coronavirus drawdown, and forced closing of nearly all businesses and real estate, the REIT sector as a whole was hit extremely hard, including gaming REITs, which were essentially thrown out in a \u2018baby with the bathwater\u2019 sell-off of all hotels\/lodging, hospitality and experiential type operations and real estate,\u201d said\u00a0Panagiotakopoulos. \u201cHowever, the selloff was too and far too fast.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The good news is twofold. One, it&#8217;s a good time to get in on REIT stocks and, two, casino companies have $4 in cash for every $1 in rent they are obligated to pay. Whew!<\/p>\n<p>Tribal-gaming interests, meanwhile, are reiterating their call for $18 million in government grants, arguing that health and education services are at risk during the shutdown.\u00a0\u201cProviding the means for tribal governments to continue paying all employees\u2019 salaries and benefits will immensely help this country recover,\u201d the <strong>National Indian Gaming <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-25513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Harris-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Harris-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Harris-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Harris-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Harris-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Association<\/strong> wrote to Congress. In addition, they want 26 weeks of loan and interest relief while they restructure debt. Taylor<\/strong> (pictured with Sen. <strong>Kamala Harris<\/strong> [D]) saying,\u00a0\u201cWe have problems with unemployment. We have a crisis brewing on health care. We have a crisis on housing. We have a crisis on sick-leave pay. And, we\u2019ll probably have a crisis on food stamps because if it\u2019s that hard to do unemployment &#8230;\u00a0The American worker needs to be at the table when we have discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far that&#8217;s not been the case. The economic-recovery bill currently before the Senate includes businesses that haven&#8217;t been negatively impacted by Covid-19 and creates a slush fund that would be administered at the discretion of Treasury Secretary <strong>Steve Mnuchin<\/strong>, to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15718\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Capitol-Hill-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Capitol-Hill-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Capitol-Hill-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Capitol-Hill.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>the tune of $500 billion. We seem to be headed for a repeat of the <strong>TARP<\/strong> fiasco of 2008-9. Meanwhile, virologist extraordinaire Dr. <strong>Anthony Fauci<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2020\/03\/i-m-going-keep-pushing-anthony-fauci-tries-make-white-house-listen-facts-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">tries to talk sense<\/a> about the pandemic, something that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2020\/3\/22\/1930179\/-In-an-Interview-Dr-Fauci-Tells-the-Truth-and-Likely-Soon-Will-be-Sidelined-or-Sacked?detail=emaildkre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">could cost him his job<\/a>. The federal government&#8217;s response (and that of some media) to Coronavirus has been that when the news is bad, shoot the messenger. On a positive note, Las Vegas casinos are making lemonade out of lemons, donating foodstuffs to <strong>Three Square<\/strong> and other Sin City charities\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shulmansays.com\/archives\/BOSVIEW\/LV-Casinos-Employees-Support-Their-Community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">too many to name<\/a>. <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> has opened three food banks, <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> has dissipated 35K hygiene kits and <strong>Wynncore<\/strong> has donated 96,000 pounds of food, while <strong>Treasure Island<\/strong> is bypassing charities and donating directly to the needy. And that&#8217;s just for starters. But with no Kentucky Derby to watch until September, this looks like a good investment of your spare time.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jottings<\/strong><\/em>: Selective closures of the <strong>Macao<\/strong> border to foreigners have taken hold after a second wave of Coronavirus manifested itself.
