Enjoy, dear readers &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve lived through the anti-<strong>Vietnam<\/strong> years in the Sixties, the gas crisis of the Seventies, the real estate meltdown in the late Eighties, and the great recession of 2008, but have never seen anything like the pandemic of <strong>COVID-19<\/strong> in my lifetime.\u00a0To ease the impact, we must do the following to get <!--more-->the <strong>Nevada<\/strong> economy back on track.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Support our Governor on the shut-down order.\u00a0<\/strong>First, we need to stop the bleeding of COVID-19 and get the infection trends moving downward as soon as possible. As a lifelong Republican, I believe in limited government and individual responsibility. That said, now is not the time to debate the political principles or legal niceties of <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sisolak.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sisolak.jpg 210w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sisolak-150x143.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/>the governor\u2019s shut-down order. In a crisis, the best decisions are made too late and never as effective as a good decision made and implemented quickly. I can only imagine the stress under which our governor is working, but he has a key quality no one can deny\u2014fortitude. He\u2019s a good man with top notch medical advisors. Is he tough and hard-nosed? Yes, but that\u2019s the <strong>exact<\/strong>\u00a0kind of leader we need right now. If you\u2019re a business owner or principal, for the sake of Nevada, our future and our children\u2019s future, comply with the governor\u2019s shut-down and help your employees and community as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increase and extend unemployment benefits.\u00a0<\/strong>For all of our loyal employees who\u2019ve been laid off, they need help and need it now. I read that the average weekly unemployment check is under $400. That won\u2019t cover rent and food in <strong>Reno<\/strong> or <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> for even the smallest <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Nevada-flag.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Nevada-flag.png 175w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Nevada-flag-150x90.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/>apartment and requires an immediate change. Whether it\u2019s federal or state funding mechanisms, the amount of those checks needs to double, immediately. Furthermore, we need to extend the term of eligibility to 24 months, as the projections I\u2019ve seen indicate our economy may not recover to a stable situation for 12-18 months. Putting this additional cash into the pockets of those good people out of work will not only keep food on their table. it will help power our state economy through recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-4586201678106135283ydpdaf21bd7yiv4309212683ydp710899f2msolistparagraph\"><b>Focus on saving, sustaining, and enabling the major employers.\u00a0<\/b>Once the governor\u2019s shutdown is lifted, government leaders must focus on getting the major employers and facilities, such as casinos and large <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Reno_skyline.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Reno_skyline.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Reno_skyline-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>manufacturers, up and running to immediately return people to work.\u00a0 We need to make sure these companies feel appreciated and confident to stay in Nevada for the long haul.\u00a0The <strong>Governor\u2019s Office of Economic Development<\/strong> (GOED) should strategize to help large employers re-hire, re-staff, and restart, which will help jump start small business through powerful payrolls and large service contracts.
