Ditto health benefits. Cautioned CEO <strong>Keith Smith<\/strong>,\u00a0This is a highly fluid situation, and it is too early to determine at what point we may be able to resume operations at each property.\u201d Workers will still have to cannibalize paid time off to scrape by the week between the cutoff of severance pay and the April 17 scheduled resumption of business, but this is a praiseworthy move nevertheless, as is Boyd&#8217;s suspension of dividend payments.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s certainly a more time-sensitive one that the recommendation of <strong>MGM China<\/strong> to\u2014<em>Ka-ching!<\/em>\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/mgm-china-to-spend-us41-million-on-dividend-payment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pay out $41 million in dividends<\/a>. Hello? Heard of <strong>Coronavirus<\/strong>? The thing that shut your casinos down for 15 days and has caused business to become <!--more-->a shadow of the past? This is not the time to throwing cash around like drunken sailors. You might need that 16% of your profits later. &#8220;MGM China\u2019s announcement comes as <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-24681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/MGM_Cotai-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/MGM_Cotai-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/MGM_Cotai-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/MGM_Cotai.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Macao<\/strong>\u2019s casino market faces a challenging business environment related to the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on operations,&#8221; reports <em>GGR Asia<\/em>, citing projections of 31% less gaming revenue and 50% lower cash flow. (Compulsory mask-wearing, mandatory temperature scans, and suspension of traditional table-side F&amp;B service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/casinos-shut-by-coronavirus-get-a-glimpse-of-the-future-in-macau-11585280952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won&#8217;t create a party-hearty atmosphere<\/a>.)\u00a0The penny drops in the next paragraph, in which is revealed that 56% of the dividend goes right to <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>: a backdoor cash infusion. Meanwhile, says <strong>Ben Lee<\/strong> of <strong>IGamiX Management<\/strong>, &#8220;With the mainlanders and Hong Kongers now effectively barred from entering Macao, the only rationale possible for keeping the casinos in Macao open right now is a social one which is to keep Macao residents employed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>MGM should bear that in mind\u2014<strong>Wynn Macau<\/strong> did, suspending dividends in light of ongoing financial uncertainty. Not that the company is in danger of running low on money. It has $1.8 billion cash on hand and can tap credit lines for another $401 million. Wynn wrote it\u00a0\u201cwill be continuously monitoring the situation and market conditions in Macau and Greater <strong>China<\/strong>, and may consider a special dividend in the future when such conditions have stabilized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just casinos: The new recession is going through the jobs market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2020\/3\/30\/1932740\/-From-retail-to-newspapers-these-corporate-giants-are-furloughing-workers-during-COVID-19-pandemic?detail=emaildkre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">like a scythe<\/a>. The <strong>University of Washington<\/strong> has good news\u2014the Coronavirus pandemic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/31\/metro\/mass-coronavirus-peak-likely-mid-april-some-epidemiologists-predict\/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">should peak in two weeks&#8217; time<\/a>\u2014and bad news: The death toll will probably reach 80,000 by mid-July.\u00a0\u201cIf we don\u2019t social distance through May &#8230;\u00a0things will be worse,\u201d said the University&#8217;s <strong>Christopher Murray<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cThe trick is figuring out how we make some kind of adjustments going forward that minimize the risk but still enable economic activity and other aspects of normal life to resume,\u201d added <strong>University of Notre Dame<\/strong> epidemiologist <strong>Alex Perkins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Arizona<\/strong>&#8216;s casino industry has pretty much closed up shop, although with multiple sovereign nations involved, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/arizona-health\/2020\/03\/17\/arizona-casinos-remain-open-midst-coronavirus-covid-19-desert-diamond-casino-west-valley\/5064903002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">there&#8217;s no one-size-fits-all policy<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>Twin Arrows Casino Resort<\/strong> in\u00a0<strong>Flagstaff<\/strong> reopens April 6. By contrast, <strong>Gila River Indian Community<\/strong> has shuttered its three casinos through April 30.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Desert-Diamond-2-300x165.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Desert-Diamond-2-300x165.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Desert-Diamond-2-150x83.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Desert-Diamond-2.jpeg 303w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Ak-Chin Indian Community<\/strong> says it, not <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>, made the call on the\u00a0shutdown of <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Ak-Chin<\/strong>, which appears to be indefinite. <strong>Talking Stick<\/strong> and <strong>Casino Arizona<\/strong> are set to reopen after April 30, while <strong>Desert Diamond Casinos &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s four properties are looking at an April 24 resumption. Champing at the bit,\u00a0the <strong>Yavapai-Prescott<\/strong> tribe is looking to reopen its two casinos on April 4, while <strong>Cliff Castle<\/strong> and <strong>Fort McDowell Casino<\/strong> are dark until further notice. Unlike some of his colleagues, Gov. <strong>Doug Ducey<\/strong> (R) is pursuing an aggressive shelter-in-place policy and is to be commended for it.<\/p>\n<p>* Over in <strong>Oklahoma<\/strong>, the <strong>Muscogee (Creek) Nation<\/strong> is extending its casino closures through April 15, while the <strong>Cherokee Nation<\/strong> is waiting at least two days longer. Employees will still be paid. \u201cUnfortunately, we don\u2019t know when it will be safe for operations to resume,\u201d said Cherokee Principal Chief <strong>Chuck Hoskin Jr<\/strong>., adding, &#8220;with the guidance of federal and tribal health experts, we are working to determine our next best steps.\u201d Despite Gov. <strong>Kevin Stitt<\/strong>&#8216;s indifference to the health crisis, local shelter-in-place orders seem to be being observed with a vengeance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tulsaworld.com\/news\/local\/state-tribes-extend-shutdown-of-casinos-through-mid-april\/article_df2f3583-6fee-5081-80bb-1d8df52aeed7.html#9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">judging by the ghost-town photos<\/a> in the <em>Tulsa World<\/em>. (Scroll to bottom of story.)<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Scientific Games<\/strong> is feeling the <strong>Covid-19<\/strong> pinch and has instituted cost-reduction policies. The include reductions in pay and hours. But the sacrifice is going all the way to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-15717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Scientific-Games-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Scientific-Games-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Scientific-Games-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Scientific-Games.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/>the top, where CEO <strong>Barry Cottle<\/strong>\u00a0is forfeiting his 2020 salary and other executives are taking a 50% hit. Leading by example, Cottle also donated to the company&#8217;s Hardship Relief Fund &#8220;to provide short-term assistance to those employees and their immediate families who incur unexpected and onerous personal, family, or living expenses as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.&#8221; Such actions speak for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Similar stringencies are taking place at <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong>, where top execs are absorbing pay cuts and front-line workers are being furloughed. &#8220;This is not a decision any company ever wishes to make, and it is particularly tough when those affected are deeply respected <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21268\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Churchill-Downs.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>team members who have helped us build great facilities and strong businesses of which we are all very proud,\u201d CEO <strong>Bill Carstanjen<\/strong> said. Only two of 12 CHDN properties are unaffected: <strong>Kentucky<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Turfway Park<\/strong> and racino <strong>Miami Valley Gaming<\/strong> in <strong>Ohio<\/strong>. Thanks to the intervention of deep-pocketed co-owner <strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong>, all workers at <strong>Rivers Casino Des Plaines<\/strong> are being paid during <strong>Illinois<\/strong>&#8216; casino closure (at least until April 8), with tipped workers receiving an &#8216;average&#8217; wage. Resumption of racing at CHDN&#8217;s titular racetrack remains clouded with uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>* Buy! Buy!! Buy!!! That&#8217;s <strong>Frank Fantini<\/strong>&#8216;s advice regarding stocks in the time of Coronavirus. There doesn&#8217;t seem to be any company he doesn&#8217;t like as a prospect. In fact, except for some passing doubts about <strong>Japan<\/strong> (political in nature), there&#8217;s nothing on which he <em>isn&#8217;t<\/em> upbeat. Throwing caution to the winds, Fantini proclaims, \u201cMany [companies] will use this financial strength to survive and recover, and they\u2019ll provide investors with returns of 100 percent, 500 percent, 1,000 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* Finally, a big <em>S&amp;G<\/em> &#8216;thank you&#8217; to <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> CEO <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>. He&#8217;s gone above and beyond the call of duty during the Coronavirus crisis and his latest move is similarly <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sheladelson1-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sheladelson1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sheladelson1-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sheladelson1.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>&#8220;george.&#8221; Through his Chinese connections, Adelson managed to get his hands on two million surgical masks, which he is donating to U.S. hospitals. An eighth of them will go to the Trump administration while the rest will stay in <strong>Nevada<\/strong> and hot zone <strong>New York<\/strong>. Yes, Adelson aspires to a casino in <strong>New York City<\/strong> but we&#8217;re not going to look this gift horse in the mouth. Also, <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> has kicked in a substantial amount of medical supplies, according to\u00a0<strong>Nevada COVID-19 Response, Relief &amp; Recovery Task Force<\/strong> boss <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong>, including half-a-million surgical gloves. Politically, Adelson is keeping his powder dry: He has yet to make a contribution this year.
