(Some would say you get screwed in both.) Neither can reopen during Phase One of Gov. <strong>Steve Sisolak<\/strong>&#8216;s multi-stage resumption of business as usual in <strong>Nevada,<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sisolak.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sisolak.jpg 210w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sisolak-150x143.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/>starting tomorrow.\u00a0Most of the continuing closures make sense as they include things like gyms (think of all that sweat in the air), bars that don&#8217;t serve food, public pools, live entertainment, movie theaters, zoos, aquariums, bowling alleys, miniature golf, &#8216;adult entertainment establishments,&#8217; spas and tattoo parlors, among others. Compared to many of those types of businesses, casinos seem as safe as a nursery ward. For the first time we&#8217;re beginning to think gaming is getting a bum rap.<\/p>\n<p>Business <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalvegas.com\/nevada-governor-announces-first-phase-reopen-of-las-vegas-on-may-9\/?fbclid=IwAR1aK64qIuxpMIU7ECmhO0Zos4i-IA6rrevBYptX6hqjaO_zOMU7g0NB_pE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that did make the grade<\/a> for reopening include restaurants (<a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/5\/7\/21251276\/governor-nevada-restaurants-reopen-dine-in-service-may-9-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at 50% capacity<\/a>), barber shops and hair salons, provided there is social distancing. Now we&#8217;re overdue for a haircut but how <!--more-->do you maintain &#8216;social distancing&#8217; with a barber breathing down your neck? The 50-percent rule also applies to retail, including grocery stores. Most importantly for some of our readers, cannabis stores will be allowed to resume service, although curbside deliver is still encouraged. Some <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26525\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/The-Strip-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/The-Strip-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/The-Strip-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/The-Strip-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/The-Strip-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/The-Strip.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>changes of lifestyle will include no beverage self-service in restaurants and no more waiting for your table indoors. Hair and nail care will be by appointment only\u2014which might constitute an improvement\u2014and customers should wear facemarks &#8220;to the extent practicable.&#8221; Open-air malls are fair game to reopen, indoor ones are not. And you can resuming test-driving new cars but without that pesky salesman riding shotgun. Sisolak courted the stoner vote during his run for office and the marijuana industry gets a chit in the form of having the discretion to turn away any customer not wearing a face mask. We&#8217;d call that a solid.<\/p>\n<p>Getting a little antsy (and looking mighty haggard), <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> CEO <strong>Matt Maddox<\/strong> pressed for a May 25 reopening of casinos. Now, if Coronavirus cases continue to trend downward, to the point where Sisolak can enact a phase a week, casinos\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/maddox.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/maddox.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/maddox-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><em>might<\/em> be open by Maddox&#8217;s deadline. But God forbid that public health should trump raking in that Memorial Day weekend business. Maddox <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/5\/7\/21250566\/wynn-reopening-las-vegas-resorts-may-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">allowed that<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWhile I can\u2019t guarantee that we\u2019re going to be opening at the end of May, it is really dependent on the science and the data coming out. We are preparing for that eventuality.&#8221; The upside for Wynn employees is that a May 25 or even June 1 resumption of bidness means they wouldn&#8217;t miss a day of pay, a not-inconsiderable consideration. Given that Wynn has been the most proactive of the Big Four (with <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> ignominiously in the rear), a certain impatience on Maddox&#8217;s part can be forgiven.<\/p>\n<p>(Maddox will &#8220;continue to monitor the situation in <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>.&#8221; Alas, that&#8217;s about all he can do, as Coronavirus continues to spread like wildfire in the Bay State. Reopening <strong>Encore Boston Harbor<\/strong> within the months seems hopelessly optimistic and we suspect Maddox knows as much.)<\/p>\n<p>With unemployment (which hit almost 15% on a national scale this week) swamping Nevada&#8217;s jobless-relief infrastructure, <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> Mayor <strong>Carolyn Goodman<\/strong> seized on this <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/5\/7\/21250252\/las-vegas-city-council-state-reopen-nevada-record-unemployment-numbers-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as a new excuse to make trouble<\/a>. In Goodman&#8217;s simple-minded worldview, you flip a switch to &#8216;reopen&#8217; the economy and\u2014presto!\u2014all the problems go away. She should try living in<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2020\/5\/7\/1943379\/-Sweden-never-shut-down-now-their-death-rate-AND-economy-is-worse-than-their-neighbors?detail=emaildkre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the real world for a while<\/a>. Unfortunately, the <strong>Las Vegas City Council<\/strong> is a <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-27015\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Fiore_Goodman.0-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Fiore_Goodman.0-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Fiore_Goodman.0-150x100.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Fiore_Goodman.0-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Fiore_Goodman.0.jpeg 920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>hotbed of jingoism, filled with fellow cranks who have been listening to too much talk radio. &#8220;We&#8217;re not stupid. We&#8217;re Americans,&#8221; huffed xenophobic <strong>Stavros Anthony<\/strong> (frankly, we&#8217;ve seen a lot of &#8216;covidiocy&#8217; rampant in <strong>America<\/strong> these last few weeks). Reading from a prepared jeremiad, Councilwoman <strong>Michele Fiore<\/strong>\u00a0(the blonde\u00a0having the good hair day) repeated a now-familiar trope:\u00a0\u201cFear is a great way to control people, and make no mistake, if you are staying home for Nevada without underlying conditions, you are in fear and you are being controlled,\u201d she said, impugning the courage of people who are behaving circumspectly. We&#8217;re less scared of <strong>Covid-19<\/strong> than by the thought that Fiore is second in line to run the City of Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0Coronavirus has claimed another convention casualty. Speaking of which, we are reliably informed that <strong>Global Gaming Expo<\/strong>, normally a beehive of activity, is hanging by a thread: The <strong>Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers<\/strong> is said to have serious reservations about proceeding with the autumn trade show, one of the biggest in gambling.<\/p>\n<p>* Cashless gambling has been the coming thing in casinos for some time now and the present pandemic <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/ggb-news-special-report-will-covid-19-mean-the-end-of-cash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">may force the issue<\/a>. After all, handling crumbled dollar bills seems a bit squicky post-coved. But will players cling to old habits? <strong>Global Payments<\/strong> President <strong>Christopher Justice<\/strong> thinks not and predicts that &#8220;one-third of guests would return tomorrow.&#8221; That number rises to 53% over three months &#8230; if and when there&#8217;s a vaccine. &#8216;Convenience&#8217; gaming will do even better, we suspect, which is either the up- or downside of the gaming industry having planted its flag in virtually every state, depending on how highly you value destination gambling or not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do brothels and casinos have in common?
