We never thought it would happen so &#8230; hallelujah! Score one for the consumer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mississippi<\/strong> casinos reopen Thursday\u00a0and while the current pandemic may have been &#8220;unprecedented&#8221; in one executive&#8217;s words, that doesn&#8217;t mean the industry was knocked for a loop. <strong>Mississippi Gaming Commission<\/strong> Executive Director <strong>Larry Gregory<\/strong> says, &#8220;This hasn\u2019t been our first rodeo in <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12456\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scarlet-Pearl-300x243.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scarlet-Pearl-300x243.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scarlet-Pearl-150x121.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scarlet-Pearl.jpeg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>terms of closures due to disaster. We\u2019ve dealt with the <strong>BP<\/strong> oil spill, <strong>Mississippi River<\/strong> flooding, and the most memorable, <strong>Hurricane Katrina<\/strong>.\u201d <em>Global Gaming Business<\/em> shines a spotlight on how one casino, <strong>Scarlet Pearl<\/strong>, is handling resumption of business and <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/mississippi-casino-exec-exhausted-excited-at-prospect-of-reopening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there&#8217;s a lot to like<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cShockingly\u2014amazingly to us\u2014very few [customers] are saying, \u2018I\u2019m not comfortable to come back,\u2019\u201d reports President <strong>Luann Pappas<\/strong>. While she hopes to staff back up to 80%, despite being able to run at only 50% capacity,\u00a0\u201cI told [at-risk employees], \u2018We will continue to pay your benefits. Do not come into the casino.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pappas has been a resourceful leader during the crisis. When employees lacked for work, she <!--more-->found some in the form of supplementing Mississippi&#8217;s overburdened unemployment-relief phone lines. And when plexiglas dividers to enforce <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Scarlet-Pearl-2-300x178.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Scarlet-Pearl-2-300x178.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Scarlet-Pearl-2-150x89.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Scarlet-Pearl-2.jpeg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>social distancing proved too time-consuming for suppliers to deliver when needed, she insourced the job to casino employees:\u00a0\u201cSo we did the research, bought the supplies at local stores, built a prototype and had it approved. We built our own. We built them for every table game and every slot machine.\u201d Although employee pay ran out on April 15, the family owned casino has kept health benefits in place indefinitely. As for still-idle workers, Pappas says,\u00a0I don\u2019t want to bring them back if the volume isn\u2019t there. We have to take it slow. We gave them our word we wouldn\u2019t lay them off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* Sports bettors flocked &#8230; to their TVs this weekend. Over six million Americans tuned in to <strong>Fox<\/strong> to watch the running of the <strong>NASCAR Cup Series Race<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www3.bostonglobe.com\/sports\/2020\/05\/18\/live-auto-racing-golf-ratings-hit\/EBGqJSMVnEfJNlLj1HU71L\/story.html?et_rid=753721489&amp;s_campaign=todaysheadlines:newsletter&amp;arc404=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">held without spectators<\/a>) in <strong>Darlington<\/strong>. Another two million-plus actually watched a charity &#8216;skins&#8217; golf match on <strong>NBC<\/strong>. The Darlington race&#8217;s viewership leapt 38% from last year while the golf tourney, won by <strong>Rory McIlroy<\/strong>, raised $5.5 million for <strong>Covid-19<\/strong> relief. Throw in the late-April return of the <strong>UFC<\/strong> and the recent revival of the <strong>Professional Bull Riders<\/strong> tour, and sports bettors finally can wager\u00a0on something without having to get up at dawn to watch Korean baseball.<\/p>\n<p>* Could <strong>Coronavirus<\/strong> be the event that finally pushes <strong>Georgia<\/strong> into the arms of casinos? Even we didn&#8217;t think so until we read the following from <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-27104\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Loeffler.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Loeffler.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Loeffler-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>Sen. <strong>Kelly Loeffler<\/strong> (R): &#8220;the cost of this pandemic has been absolutely devastating in Georgia. In addition to the lives lost, one in three Georgians have lost their job. Crop prices have decreased 50-60%. Food banks have seen a 40% increase in demand.&#8221; If things are as bad as Loeffler says\u2014and we have no reason to doubt her\u2014the Lege may finally act on growing pro-gaming sentiment. The opposition of the <strong>Georgia Lottery<\/strong> (booming during shelter-in-place) will be immense, so it will be a heavy lift, but the political imperative may finally exist.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>M Resort<\/strong> had one of the best buffets in the <strong>Las Vegas Valley<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/5\/18\/21261883\/tropicana-m-resort-restaurants-buffets-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No more<\/a>. <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> is closing it and the one at the <strong>Tropicana Las Vegas<\/strong> for an unspecified period of time. And forget about a traditional sit-<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26639\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Tropicana-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Tropicana-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Tropicana-1-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Tropicana-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Tropicana-1.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>down lunch at an M\/Trop restaurant. This spartan regime is informed by (explicitly) an abundance of caution on Penn&#8217;s part and (we suspect) the company&#8217;s relative penury. Be prepared for the sight of a fog machine (yes, a fog machine) on the casino floor at night, part of the new cleaning regimen. We&#8217;d definitely go to the Trop to check out that novelty. Kudos, incidentally, the Penn for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LasVegasLocally\/status\/1260719166337642497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">donating 45 tons of perishable food<\/a> to local charities as the pandemic raged.<\/p>\n<p>* In a literally underground development during the pandemic, <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Boring Co<\/strong>. has <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/urban-transport\/boring-company-tunnel-vegas\/?utm_source=New+Atlas+Subscribers&amp;utm_campaign=d9a07267df-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_05_18_02_24&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_65b67362bd-d9a07267df-76699609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finished the excavation<\/a> phase of its subterranean people mover for the <strong>Las Vegas Convention Center<\/strong>. When finished, little <strong>Tesla<\/strong> cars will convey conventioneers around a two-mile loop, saving them a lot of wear and tear on their feet. The entire trip should take two minutes.\u00a0\u201cThis milestone not only helps usher in the future of transportation in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>, but it signals the destination\u2019s ability to push through during trying times and continue to meet the evolving needs of our visitors,\u201d remarked LVCVA CEO <strong>Steve Hill<\/strong>. Considering that the project was incepted in May 2019, Musk has been moving along smartly. Once finished, the &#8216;pods&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/technology\/infrastructure\/a32477074\/boring-company-las-vegas-loop-excavation\/?source=nl&amp;utm_source=nl_pop&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;date=051620&amp;utm_campaign=nl20309206&amp;src=nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will carry 12-16 passengers<\/a>, assuming social distancing is no longer in place.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps less smartly, he&#8217;s been flirting with moving one of his factories to Sin City\u00a0(Councilwoman <strong>Michele Fiore<\/strong> proposed naming a street after him in return), which led <strong>California<\/strong> to threaten him with the loss of his tax credits.
