It&#8217;s unclear why Sisolak moved casinos <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/5\/22\/21268300\/nevada-las-vegas-strip-casinos-reopen-june-4-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">up to Phase Two<\/a> of his resumption plan but we can&#8217;t say it&#8217;s a bad idea. The industry seems more than ready. Among those is <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>, which plans to open two casinos on a trial basis. One, we always knew, would be <strong>Caesars Palace<\/strong>. As for the other, if you had the <strong>Flamingo<\/strong> in your office pool, collect your winnings. (<strong>Harrah&#8217;s Las Vegas<\/strong>\u2014our pick\u2014and <strong>The Linq<\/strong>&#8216;s casino <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/5\/21\/21267121\/caesars-palace-flamingo-open-first-casinos-nevada-linq-harrahs-high-roller-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will be next.<\/a>) As for the Sisolak plan, it&#8217;s a bit of a gamble.\u00a0\u201c<strong>Las Vega<\/strong>s can never be known as <!--more-->the place where people go and get sick,\u201d says Robert Lang, executive director of <strong>Brookings Mountain West<\/strong> at <strong>UNLV<\/strong>. Thusly, get used to no valet parking, masked dealers and disinfected dice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know what we\u2019ve gone through for the last 10 weeks. No one\u2019s having fun,\u201d <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Bill Hornbuckle<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Hornbuckle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Hornbuckle.jpg 190w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Hornbuckle-118x150.jpg 118w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/>complained to the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cThe simple idea that I could get out, come to a resort, lay at a pool, enjoy a nice dinner, sit at a blackjack table. There\u2019s something to be said for all of that.\u201d Hornbuckle can also cross <strong>Cirque du Soleil<\/strong> of off his list of things to do: The fey French-Canadian shows are remaining dark for the nonce. Hornbuckle has, however, pulled slot machines in favor of hand-washing stations. Of <strong>Bellagio<\/strong>&#8216;s 4,000 hotel rooms, only 1,200 will be let. <strong>Wynncore<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/5\/22\/21267559\/wynn-reopen-restaurants-inside-casino-strip-coronavirus-pandemic-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opening five restaurants<\/a>\u2014<strong>SW Steakhouse<\/strong>, <strong>Allegro<\/strong>, <strong>Jardin<\/strong>, <strong>Lakeside<\/strong> and <strong>Mizumi<\/strong>\u2014June 1. Caesars is still bent upon reopening its white elephant, the <strong>Las Vegas High Roller<\/strong>. Good luck maintaining social distancing in one of its gondolas.<\/p>\n<p>Lang predicts the recovery curve will start with locals, followed by drive-in Californians (nobody, it seems to want to fly until there&#8217;s a vaccine), then domestic travelers and finally international tourists. Speaking of fly-in travelers, <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> still appears inclined to keep its three<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26437\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-Lion-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-Lion-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-Lion-2-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-Lion-2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MGM-Lion-2.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><strong>Downtown<\/strong> casinos closed, at least until demand from <strong>Hawaii<\/strong> beings to manifest. Hotel rates on the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> appear to be bottoming out (or peaking, if you&#8217;re paying them). They&#8217;re -32% for the week of June 14. Business travel looks stronger than leisure, with midweek rates -26% but weekend ones -41% (for a blended rate of $129\/night). <strong>MGM Grand<\/strong> has begun taking bookings (<em>Aha!<\/em>), with MGM rates -37% on weekdays and -39% weekends. Caesars Entertainment has improved dramatically midweek (-19%) although not on weekends (-43%), while weekday travelers are avoiding <strong>Wynncore<\/strong> (-40%) and weekends are weak (-36%). As for <strong>Venelazzo<\/strong>, it&#8217;s looking strong with a -20%\/-30% weekday\/weekend split. By the way, Caesars has temporarily waived self-parking fees. Huzzah! Let&#8217;s hope the change becomes permanent, as economic imperatives would seem to dictate.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Scrooge McDuck<\/strong> of the Vegas shutdown turns out to be <strong>Treasure Island<\/strong> owner Phil Ruffin whose employees &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/vegas.eater.com\/2020\/5\/22\/21236898\/las-vegas-hospitality-workers-layoffs-reopening-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">were not offered any kind of <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5463\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ruffin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"130\" \/>relief<\/a>.&#8221; Even <strong>Sahara<\/strong> owner <strong>Alex Meruelo<\/strong> put together packages of free food for terminated workers. <strong>Culinary Union<\/strong> spokeswoman Bethany Khan minced few words:\u00a0\u201cMany gaming corporations are owned by straight-up billionaires, like Phil Ruffin at Treasure Island [$3.1 billion], Alex Meruelo at the Sahara, and <strong>David Siegel<\/strong> at <strong>Westgate<\/strong>.\u00a0Those are three billionaires who are not paying their workers anything during closure and have left them to figure out food banks and fend for themselves. It\u2019s shameful that they abandoned their workers during a global crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a bit of history the Silver State would rather not have made, it set an all-time record for unemployment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktvn.com\/story\/42165319\/nevadas-unemployment-rate-is-highest-in-us-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">topping 28%<\/a>. Employment fell 244,800 in April. That percentage leads the nation, by the way, and painfully illustrates the dangers of premising a state&#8217;s economy solely on <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2710\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/DSCN1930-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/DSCN1930-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/DSCN1930-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/DSCN1930.JPG 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>tourism. With casinos reopening, that number will recede but slowly rather than dramatically. (How many maids do you need when your hotel is operating with only 30% of its rooms?)\u00a0&#8220;Together, these numbers show about 573,000 Nevadans affected by the COVID-19 shutdown,&#8221; said Nevada Chief Economist <strong>David Schmidt<\/strong>.\u00a0&#8220;We may go another month at levels comparable to this but then as more reopening starts to happen, we would expect to see people returning to work and no longer being unemployed and reengaged with the labor force and see those numbers fall.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Admitted Sisolak,\u00a0&#8220;Nevada is facing record high unemployment and the\u00a0sheer numbers are difficult to comprehend,&#8221; adding,\u00a0&#8220;Nevada is working diligently to get people back to work as fast as possible, in a safe and responsible manner.&#8221; \u00a0The last time Silver State employment levels were this low was in 2013 and initial claims are six times what they were in December 2008, when the Great Recession hit.<\/p>\n<p>And if you think casino employees are chafing to get back to work, think <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/DSCN1787-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/DSCN1787-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/DSCN1787-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/DSCN1787.JPG 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/>again.\u00a0\u201cWe are not an experiment,\u201d bristled <strong>The Rio<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Angelica Garcia<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cMost of our union members are women and minorities and we\u2019re going to be used as guinea pigs. I don\u2019t want to go back and risk myself and my family getting sick just for money.\u201d Add Treasure Island&#8217;s <strong>Yolanda Scott<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cWe deal with a lot of tourists.\u00a0In my opinion, we need to be the last place to open.\u201d As Sisolak said,\u00a0\u201cThe lives of Nevadans are more important than profit.\u201d Are you listening, Phil?<\/p>\n<p>* While Americans may harken to Las Vegas&#8217; siren song in the near future, that doesn&#8217;t necessarily bode well for airlines.
