{"id":27164,"date":"2020-05-27T11:31:40","date_gmt":"2020-05-27T19:31:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=27164"},"modified":"2020-11-13T06:30:25","modified_gmt":"2020-11-13T14:30:25","slug":"aga-tackles-irs-stevens-picks-up-the-tab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/aga-tackles-irs-stevens-picks-up-the-tab\/","title":{"rendered":"AGA tackles IRS; Stevens picks up the tab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Perhaps emboldened by its success with the <strong>Small Business Administration<\/strong>, the <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> is tackling\u00a0an even bigger, more formidable foe: the <strong>Internal Revenue Service<\/strong>. Specifically, the AGA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/gaming-association-renews-request-for-higher-irs-jackpot-threshold-2032682\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is taking aim<\/a> at the $1,200 &#8220;IRS lockdown,&#8221; the threshold at <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23114\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/miller.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/miller.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/miller-150x114.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>which slot-jackpot winners have to pay taxes, imposed in 1977. Even more specifically, the AGA wants the cap indexed to inflation, which would raise it to $4,700\u2014although the AGA is pushing for a $5,000 cap. (The Obama administration tried <em>lowering<\/em> it to $600 but that idea was thankfully beaten back.) AGA prexy <strong>Bill Miller<\/strong> isn&#8217;t the first to have this notion. Reps. <strong>Dina Titus<\/strong> (D, below) and <strong>Darin LaHoo<\/strong>d (R) were pushing it last year. The AGA move comes in response to a Trump administration executive order\u00a0for <!--more-->regulatory reforms that could save money\u2014though we&#8217;ll see if a tax cut for bread-and-butter players is what they had in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Still, <strong>Global Market Advisors<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Brendan Bussmann<\/strong> says, &#8220;any time you can also simplify taxes, regardless of who you are, is a positive at any level.\u201d <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14419\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Titus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Titus.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Titus-112x150.jpg 112w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/>Adds Miller,\u00a0\u201cThe increased threshold would not only enable the IRS to focus its limited enforcement resources on those taxpayers who are most likely to have net slot winnings at the end of the taxable year, but would also significantly reduce close interactions required between gaming employees and patrons to issue tax forms.\u201d The regulatory reform &#8220;was already long overdue prior to the pandemic, and now has additional importance as the gaming industry emerges from this crisis.\u201d As Miller says,\u00a0\u201cThe current threshold is outdated and imposes significant compliance burdens on both the IRS and the gaming industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Miller, however got off-topic\u00a0with a blame-the-messenger blast for running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-basketball-nba-esports-gambling\/bookmakers-suspend-betting-after-nba-2k20-results-leaked-online-idUSKBN21O34U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stories like this<\/a> that source offshore bookmaking operations. It&#8217;s not the media&#8217;s fault that there are potentially dodgy bookies operating overseas or that Americans can access them. The AGA should be putting <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15025\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/NBA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" height=\"210\" \/>its voice toward having the federal government crack down on those operations, not demanding that the media bury its head in the sand. Miller&#8217;s <em>causus belli<\/em> is particularly ill-chosen: a case where bookies tipped bettors to a fix that was in in <strong>NBA<\/strong> match play. Were it not for clear communication between the books and the media, many would not have been the wiser. Miller fulminates, &#8220;Editorial coverage is still perpetuating the illegal sports betting market by continuing to confuse consumers. Simply calling these operators &#8216;offshore&#8217; is not enough. If I had my way, the media wouldn\u2019t write about these sportsbooks at all, but I recognize that stories on prop bets on atypical things such as politics or the weather will naturally draw some eyes.&#8221; If Miller had his way, we wouldn&#8217;t have a Fourth Estate or a First Amendment but, fortunately, it&#8217;s not up to him.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0This is mighty &#8220;george&#8221;: <strong>Derek Stevens<\/strong> is offering to foot the bill for 1,000 free airlifts as part of his &#8220;Keep America Flying&#8221; promotion, for <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-770x1024.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>which you can sign up\u2014first come, first served\u2014at <strong>The D<\/strong>&#8216;s Web site.
