It&#8217;s an eyesore, a civic embarrassment and a product for which demand does not exist. We perhaps should be saying &#8220;The Drew&#8221; but\u2014per <strong>Scott Roeben<\/strong>&#8216;s all-but-<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/F-blew-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/F-blew-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/F-blew-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/F-blew.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>infallible <em>VitalVegas<\/em>, <strong>The Drew<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalvegas.com\/plug-pulled-on-the-drew-project-in-default\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is in default<\/a>, meaning that it&#8217;s time for CEO <strong>Bobby Baldwin<\/strong> to update his resum\u00e9, presuming he wants people to know he was affiliated with this white elephant. <strong>Steven Witkoff<\/strong> (over)paid <strong>Carl Icahn<\/strong> for the incredible hulk (F-blue, not Baldwin) and his business plan always seemed to have more optimism than logic. Among Roeben&#8217;s revelations is that Witkoff&#8217;s capital\u2014$490 million\u2014was pathetically short of what he needed. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesskorea.co.kr\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=46705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The backers were<\/a> &#8220;<strong>Mirae Asset Daewoo<\/strong>, <strong>NH Investment &amp; Securities<\/strong>, <strong>Hana Financial Investment<\/strong>, <strong>Kangwon Land<\/strong> and a <strong>Hyundai Motor Group<\/strong> subsidiary.&#8221; (Witkoff also had some tobacco money in the project.) If Kangwon Land sounds familiar, it&#8217;s the only casino <!--more-->in <strong>South Korea<\/strong> that citizens are allowed to patronize.<\/p>\n<p>The entire project would have cost three trillion won and it might as well have been three trillion dollars for all of Witkoff&#8217;s ability to raise the billions needed to complete The Drew. As for the Korean consortium, it over-exposed itself to the U.S. hotel market at the worst possible time. As a source said,\u00a0\u201cThe hotels took a more direct hit from the pandemic due to their profit volatility, higher than that of office buildings.\u201d Regarding\u00a0Witkoff&#8217;s alleged &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/drew-las-vegas-developer-expects-to-close-2b-construction-loan-soon-1942440\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beehive of activity<\/a>,&#8221; it mysteriously evaporated at least as soon as <strong>Coronavirus<\/strong> struck. The Drew was ticketed for late-2022 completion but we&#8217;ll take a page from <strong>Buzz Lightyear<\/strong> and describe its timeline as &#8220;To infinity\u2014and beyond!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Derek Stevens<\/strong>\u00a0carved time out from his busy green-shooting of the <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> market to take <em>Global Gaming Business<\/em> into his confidence about some of his strategies. One of his business secrets was to keep casino <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens-770x1024.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Derek-Stevens.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/the-big-countdown-derek-stevens-on-the-reopening-of-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in touch with players<\/a> weekly during the shutdown, reinforcing loyalty.\u00a0\u201cWhat I found were that a couple of thousand customers really wanted to come to Las Vegas again,\u201d hence Stevens&#8217; 2,00 comped, one-way tickets to Sin City. If he&#8217;d wanted, he probably could have booked 15,000 passengers, so intense was the demand. <strong>Southwest Airlines<\/strong>, <strong>Frontier<\/strong> and <strong>Sun Country<\/strong> were the carriers more receptive to the highly successful scheme. Stevens had been watching regional jurisdictions resume business robustly and thought, Why not Vegas?<\/p>\n<p>Counter-intuitively, Stevens believes\u00a0Las Vegas sports books will &#8220;surge&#8221; despite a dearth of major-league sports (with baseball bickering itself into oblivion). Yes, there will be some hockey, a bit of the <strong>NBA<\/strong> but\u00a0\u201cWe really think the interest level is going to accelerate in the back half of the year.\u201d <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/New-Golden-Gate.jpg-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/New-Golden-Gate.jpg-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/New-Golden-Gate.jpg-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/New-Golden-Gate.jpg.jpg 347w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Calling the casino shutdown the toughest period of his career, period, Stevens decided to go rogue and reopen his hotel rooms today, likening tomorrow to <strong>Repeal Day<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cEveryone wants to be here when we open everything at midnight.\u201d The mogul also promises to open <strong>Circa<\/strong> on schedule and to have health-screening procedures in place at his extant casinos that exceed what the <strong>Centers for Disease Control<\/strong> and Nevada regulators mandate.<\/p>\n<p>And he remains bullish on <strong>Downtown<\/strong>, saying,\u00a0\u201cWe love <strong>Fremont Street<\/strong>, we love sports, and we love meeting our customers and hanging out with them. It\u2019s fun for us and our customers, which is something you can do when you are a smaller company.\u201d With the exception of charging resort fees, Stevens seems to &#8216;get&#8217; the Vegas experience better than nearly all his rivals. We could use a few more of him.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jottings<\/strong><\/em>: According to <em>VitalVegas<\/em>, a company is creating socks that &#8220;smell like Las Vegas.&#8221; And what might that fragrance be? Cigar smoke? The nostril-choking perfume in <strong>Venelazzo<\/strong> elevator lobbies? <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5463\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ruffin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"130\" \/>Suggestions, anyone? &#8230; <strong>Phil Ruffin<\/strong> is suing his insurance company for denying a business-loss claim for <strong>Treasure Island<\/strong>&#8216;s pandemic shutdown. Doesn&#8217;t that fall under &#8220;Acts of God&#8221;? &#8230; Horse racing will return June 6 to <strong>Hawthorne Race Course<\/strong> in <strong>Illinois<\/strong>, in a fan-less arrangement called &#8220;studio racing.&#8221; A variety of social-distancing measures (even for horses) enabled the re-start &#8230; World, meet <strong>Alexia<\/strong>, a wine-serving robot debuted in <strong>Pamplona<\/strong>. Five-foot-tall, roving Alexia enables the twin needs of alcohol service and social distancing. We foresee her soon at a casino near you.
