The question: To smoke or not to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/smoking-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/smoking-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/smoking-150x96.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/smoking.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>smoke? Leaving aside our (negative) feelings about tobacco and its side effects, if the casino industry has the willpower to extirpate smoking in casinos, this is the moment when it can make that happen. Normally, this would be commercial suicide but gamblers want to play again. Where are they going to do that if not in the casinos? Online? Only in a few states and even there Big Gaming\u00a0owns the action. Besides, how many people want a potential airborne pathogen blown in their faces, cosseted amidst a cloud of cigarette smoke?<\/p>\n<p>Also, gambling = smoking turns out to be something of a myth. <em>Global Gaming Business<\/em> reports <!--more-->that there are 800 smoke-free casinos in the <strong>United States<\/strong>. Laura mercy! Somebody tell the tobacco lobby. Also, as casino demographics grow greener, they also become more anti-smoking. At least one casino has had a moment of truth during <strong>Coronavirus<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Angel of the Winds Casino Resort<\/strong> near <strong>Arlington<\/strong>, <strong>Washington State<\/strong>, has just gone no-smoking.\u00a0\u201cThis disease affects the respiratory system, I\u2019ve read that smokers have a great chance of going downhill if they get it,\u201d reported General Manager <strong>Travis O&#8217;Neil<\/strong>. &#8220;It came down to the health and safety of our team members.\u201d (Always a good priority.)<\/p>\n<p>The tribes may be taking the lead (as they so often do) but the big boys may be getting religion as well. <em>VitalVegas<\/em> reports that <strong>Park MGM<\/strong> will reopen <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalvegas.com\/park-mgm-to-be-first-entirely-non-smoking-resort-in-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as a smoke-free resort<\/a>. It&#8217;s popular with smoking-averse <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-25709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Park-MGM-3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Park-MGM-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Park-MGM-3-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Park-MGM-3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Park-MGM-3-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Park-MGM-3.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Millennials and is relatively new, meaning there&#8217;s less tobacco-related depreciation to reverse. And if it doesn&#8217;t fly, well, <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> has 12 other <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> resorts to fall back upon. The company has already sounded customers out on going smoke-free and ex-CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5vegas.com\/coronavirus\/las-vegas-strip-dealer-seeks-changes-smoking-ban-ahead-of-casinos-reopening\/article_8a7a0c36-8f51-11ea-bc62-f32697b253e8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently\u00a0prophesied<\/a> the coming of a tobacco-less Sin City. &#8220;We\u2019ve gone non-smoking in multiple venues in the resorts and I think that over time, we\u2019ll gravitate toward that.\u201d Writes <strong>Scott Roeben<\/strong>, &#8220;We\u2019ve heard there are a lot of MGM Resorts executives who are very nervous about this decision, and if the rumor pans out, we look forward to seeing how this surprising twist unfolds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whatever private-sector casinos decide to do, O&#8217;Neil reports no averse effect on &#8220;nuts&#8221; levels of business: &#8220;We maintain a 50% capacity, masks and cleanliness. We take it very seriously. And people are very happy.\u201d Two <strong>California<\/strong> tribal casinos previously experimented with going smoke-free but pulled back. Perhaps that&#8217;s because tribal casinos are the last refuge of the tobacco addict in the Golden State.\u00a0\u201cOur data showed that air quality was very, very bad indoors [if] the number of smokers was 9% to 11% at any one time,\u201d <strong>California Clean Air Project<\/strong> Director\u00a0<strong>Narinder Dhaliwal<\/strong> told <em>GGB<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cA very low number of smokers cause air quality to be extremely low. It begs [<em>sic<\/em>] the question, why continue to allow smoking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bear River Casino<\/strong> won&#8217;t. Neither will\u00a0<strong>Spotlight 29 Casino<\/strong> in <strong>Coachella<\/strong>, two that are going smoke-free as an anti-Coronavirus response. Even though <strong>Sycuan Casino<\/strong> remains a smokers&#8217; haven, it <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Talking-Stick.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Talking-Stick.jpg 290w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Talking-Stick-150x90.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/>knows the times are changing: Last year&#8217;s expansion was all smoke-free. Latest aboard the bandwagon is <strong>Talking Stick Resort<\/strong> in <strong>Arizona<\/strong>. Customers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/news\/continuing_coverage\/coronavirus_coverage\/want-to-gamble-talking-stick-resort-back-open-with-changes-including-no-smoking-inside\/article_da485bd0-a53d-11ea-8d70-9b20aa6cf776.html#utm_source=azfamily.com&amp;utm_campaign=%2Fnewsletters%2Flists%2Fnoon-news-update%2F%3F-dc%3D1591210803&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=image\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seemed OK with the change<\/a>: Drinking beer while wearing a mask was more of a sticking point. The resort reported normal levels of business, although they would not commit to the no-smoking regime on a permanent basis. That&#8217;s all right. One skirmish will not win this war. But who&#8217;d ever have thought that players would want to gamble <em>more<\/em> than to smoke? Evidently so.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong>, usually an also-ran among the Boardwalk&#8217;s casinos, is making a stir about its reopening plans (although there is yet to be a date certain for casino resumption). President <strong>Mark Giannantonio<\/strong> is <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6589\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Mark_Giannantonio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"140\" \/>promising a number of capex improvements. These include &#8220;significant capital investment to improve air quality.&#8221; Also, &#8220;installation of advanced bipolar ionization and UV technology to purify the air and clean surfaces&#8221; will take place. The prexy&#8217;s five-point plan is big on ultraviolet technology as a preventive\u00a0mechanism against <strong>Covid-19<\/strong>. Additionally\u00a0promised is &#8220;The installation of a bipolar ionization air purification system which purifies and disinfects the air flowing into a space and reduces the spread of airborne viruses and bacteria resulting in healthier indoor air quality.&#8221; Who knew it was positive\u00a0to be bipolar?<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, this all sounds very much to the good. Employees will be masked and subject to testing before returning to work. They&#8217;ll also be schooled in <strong>Centers for Disease Control<\/strong> health protocols. As for guests, they&#8217;re encouraged to check in and out remotely, avoid crowding and not get into elevators more than four at a time (the latter is actually official policy). It&#8217;s an ambitious comeback regime but, with reopening unlikely for another month, Giannantonio has plenty of time to finish putting this into place.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Excalibur<\/strong> is back. Or soon will be. MGM has announced a June 11 reopening for the kingly casino, so <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong> wasn&#8217;t too far off the mark when he named it as one <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/excalibur-pic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/excalibur-pic2.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/excalibur-pic2-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>of the first MGM casinos to return. The resumption of business at the Ex speaks well to the demand levels MGM is seeing in its lower price tiers. \u201cWe are very pleased by the enthusiasm we are seeing from guests ready to come back to <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>,\u201d said CEO <strong>Bill Hornbuckle<\/strong>. MGM continues to promote its &#8220;Seven-Point Safety Plan&#8221; (which actually has 12 points) and the Ex&#8217;s casino floor is such a rat&#8217;s nest\u2014arguably the most confusing in Vegas\u2014that maintaining a salubrious atmosphere in that property will be MGM&#8217;s biggest reopening challenge yet. <strong>King Arthur<\/strong> supposedly promised to return to <strong>England<\/strong> in its time of greatest need.
