But it happened in <strong>Louisiana<\/strong>, suggesting a stronger-than-expected comeback from the casino shutdown. Given that there was one fewer weekend day last month, the numbers may be even better than they initially appear. <strong>Harrah&#8217;s New Orleans<\/strong> and <strong>Fair Grounds<\/strong> racino were only open for 18 days, and paid the price, plunging 75% and 49% respectively. The <strong>New Orleans<\/strong> market had the worst of it (-47.5%) while the happy surprise was <strong>Baton Rouge<\/strong>, off a mere 4.5%. <strong>Lake Charles<\/strong> did second best, in terms of recovery, down 7%. Partly due to the <strong>Diamond Jacks<\/strong> closure, <strong>Shreveport<\/strong>\/<strong>Bossier City<\/strong> missed by 17%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harrah&#8217;s New Orleans grossed a mere $5.5 million while Fair Grounds brought home $2 million. <strong>Boomtown New Orleans<\/strong> only missed 6% ($9 million), <strong>Treasure Chest<\/strong> was 27% down at $7 million. <strong>Amelia Belle<\/strong> sank 41% to $2 million. (It was a bad month for <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> generally, a good one for <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>.) <strong>L&#8217;Auberge Baton Rouge<\/strong> was flat (a triumph!) at $12 million, <strong>Casino Rouge<\/strong> was down 2.5% at $4.5 million while doomed <strong>Belle of Baton Rouge<\/strong> plummeted 31.5% to $1.5 million. <strong>L&#8217;Auberge Lake Charles<\/strong> slipped 6% but still took first place in its market with $24.5 million. Close behind with $24 million was the <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong>, down 7.5%. <strong>Isle Grand Palais<\/strong> (due for overhaul) shed 19.5% to $6.5 million while <strong>Delta Downs<\/strong> was off 2% to $15 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Margaritaville<\/strong> continued beating the pants off <strong>Horseshoe Bossier City<\/strong>, grossing $15 million for a 7% <em>gain<\/em>. Horseshoe won $13 million, down 8.5%. Nobody else came close. <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Louisiana Downs<\/strong>\u2014a candidate for divestiture\u2014grossed $4 million, still a 1.5% uptick. <strong>Eldorado Shreveport<\/strong> plunged 41% to $5.5 million, <strong>Boomtown Bossier<\/strong> slipped 2.5% to $4 million and <strong>Sam&#8217;s Town<\/strong> tumbled 34.5% to $4 million. Dame Fortune may be smiling on Louisiana but she&#8217;s not exactly spreading the wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Wind-Creek.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25128\" width=\"575\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Wind-Creek.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Wind-Creek-150x87.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Wind-Creek-300x175.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Casinos in <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> reopened June 9 but only eked out $74 million. (<strong>Rivers Casino Philadelphia<\/strong> stayed closed.) Slots plunged 69% to $62.5 million while tables spiraled 83% downward to $12 million. Gambling houses operated with 36% fewer slots but only 3% table-game positions. Win\/slot\/day was an anemic $130. Boyd&#8217;s unlucky streak persisted, as <strong>Valley Forge Resort<\/strong> plunged 79% to $2 million. <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> didn&#8217;t do much better at <strong>Chester Downs<\/strong>, falling 74% to $5.5 million. <strong>Lady Luck Nemacolin<\/strong>, unthinkably, did as much revenue as Valley Forge, off only 11%. <strong>Pittsburgh<\/strong> was the headline, with <strong>Rivers Casino<\/strong> winning $20 million, off 34% but tops in the Keystone State. Traditional leader <strong>Parx Casino <\/strong>fell off the cliff (-93%), grossing only $3.5 million. <strong>Wind Creek Bethlehem<\/strong>, sucking wind, did as badly, with $3 million for -92.5%. <strong>Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs<\/strong> grossed $6.5 million, -65%, while <strong>The Meadows<\/strong> raked in $13 million, -36.5%. <strong>Mount Airy<\/strong> fell 57.5% to $7 million and <strong>Hollywood Casino at Penn National<\/strong> dipped 54.5% to $9 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The salvation of Pennsylvania was sports betting, which generated $89 million in handle. Almost all of that was online, with <strong>FanDuel<\/strong> at Valley Forge handling $33 million in wagers while retail betting was negligible. &#8220;The disruption in sports betting is something no one could have seen coming, but even with it, the industry is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was last year,&#8221; said analyst&nbsp;<strong>Valerie Cross<\/strong>. New Internet casinos were also a hit, grossing $50 million, not as good as May but still robust. Despite being dark, Rivers Philadelphia made $15 million online while Mount Airy, enjoying a monopoly on i-poker, raked in $3 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">In <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>, what happens here sure as hell doesn&#8217;t stay here\u2014especially if it&#8217;s <strong>Covid-19<\/strong>. <em>USA Today<\/em> reports that at least 123 tourists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/2020\/07\/16\/least-123-visitors-nevada-test-positive-coronavirus-after-casinos-reopen\/5453831002\/\" class=\"broken_link\">have tested positive<\/a> for <strong>Coronavirus<\/strong> after visiting Sin City. &#8220;The cases jumped in the weeks after <strong>Nevada<\/strong>\u2019s casinos reopened on June 4 after being shuttered for nearly three months.&#8221; At the time, Gov. <strong>Steve Sisolak<\/strong> (D) said, \u201cWe\u2019re encouraging visitors to come and enjoy themselves and have a good time.\u201d We don&#8217;t think the unlucky (or possibly careless) 123 are having much fun at the moment, a 14-day quarantine being the best-case scenario. Californians make up the plurality of both the victims and of Vegas visitors (46%), although some cases range as far afield as <strong>Brazil<\/strong>. This just isn&#8217;t the time to be visiting Nevada, despite its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/itineraries\/family-friendly-nevada?utm_source=Atlas+Obscura+Daily+Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=3abf7b7604-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_07_15&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_f36db9c480-3abf7b7604-64289113&amp;mc_cid=3abf7b7604&amp;mc_eid=57524cd942\" class=\"broken_link\">historical, artistic and natural wonders<\/a>. With 31,915 confirmed cases and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgj.com\/story\/news\/2020\/07\/16\/nevada-covid-19-cases-deaths-washoe-county-reno-las-vegas\/5448531002\/?_ga=2.57282666.1991133724.1595006267-60338760.1595006266\" class=\"broken_link\">a record-setting<\/a> 1,447 daily new cases on the 15th, it seems time to think the unthinkable and ponder a shutdown of the casino industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"314\" class=\"wp-image-24334\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trump.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trump.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trump-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trump-191x300.jpg 191w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Sisolak&#8217;s hand might be forced by, of all unlikely people, <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>. The <strong>White House<\/strong> has declared <strong>Clark County<\/strong> a &#8220;red zone,&#8221; banning gatherings of more than 10 people and recommending closure of gyms. If you thought Sisolak was strict, you should see what the federal guvmint <a href=\"https:\/\/news3lv.com\/news\/local\/white-house-suggests-closing-all-gyms-limiting-gatherings-to-10-or-fewer-in-clark-county?fbclid=IwAR0NF3lMQL_Py9VLaW0FwivRZZULFQOl0fUCTTDxEBgEEhlCIdkuuRp-dz4\">is recommending<\/a>.
