What gives? Well, Detroit was still off-limits (redounding to the considerable benefit of Hollywood Toledo) and discretionary capital was clearly plentiful. The four non-racinos hadn’t even come close to this number since March 2013. “What’s remarkable about these figures is that they were reached when all four casino resorts were dealing with the effects of Covid-19, returning from state-mandated lockdowns with fewer customers, fewer machines and almost no amenities,” reports David Ross. Hollywood Toledo’s $33 million obliterated the previous apogee, a $26 million month for Jack Cleveland. Said Ohio Casino Control Commission spokeswoman Jessica Franks, “July was a weird case scenario and Toledo was very much an outlier.” And a very profitable one, Franks speculates.

“I would guess that for folks who have entertainment dollars, their options are fairly limited and perhaps they’re choosing to go the casinos—that’s one place where they can have some fun,” Franks adds. You can hardly go to the movies in the Buckeye State and concerts are verboten. So long as that’s the case, expect casinos to continue prospering. (Racinos were not including in the OCCC’s report because they answer to the Ohio Lottery.)

Just in time for National Aviation Day, passengers came to blows on an American Airlines flight out of Las Vegas. The cabin was already crammed when one flier’s refusal to abide by American’s mask-wearing rule starting exchanging fisticuffs with another traveler. The fracas was caught on video and, as Fox News put it, “Throwing punches is certainly not social distancing.” Neither is the crowded cabin, one in which we would not set foot knowingly. Authorities were summoned and the woman who caused the ruckus was seen exiting the plane. Well, she got to spend a little more time in Vegas, whether she wanted to or not.

Last week we had the pleasure of interviewing Derek Stevens but forgot to ask him the most important question: Will Sigma Derby be coming to Circa? Perhaps a more relevant query might be whether it is in danger at The D. Stevens has launched a Sigma Derby awareness campaign, complete with video. (He is nothing if not a showman, something Vegas desperately needs.) Stevens is urging you to play Sigma Derby by the pound, the more quarters the better, as it gets you some nice Sigma Derby swag. Were we still based in Vegas, we’d make a beeline for the bank to cash out some 25-cent pieces and play the game that has the best time on device in the casino. Tally ho!

Jottings: Another Vegas locals casino is applying for an extended closure. The longtime CFO of San Manuel Casino in California has been promoted to CEO of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. “In his new role, he will be responsible for all day-to-day leadership and operations of San Manuel Tribal Government Operations, San Manuel Casino, and other entities.” San Manuel is the primary gaming partner of the Las Vegas Raiders, in case you hadn’t heard.

Ohio casinos didn’t just outperform the Midwest during July, they had their best month ever.
