Last weekend&#8217;s Run for the Roses saw betting handle of $79.5 million, down 49% from last year. All races run on Sept. 5 saw an aggregate handle of $126 million, half of 2019&#8217;s $251 million. TV ratings were also in the tank. 8.8 million viewers tuned in, compared to double that last year. <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Daniel Politzer<\/strong> blamed a heavy slate of sports competition: &#8220;we attribute this decline to the shift in timing from the first Saturday in May to Labor Day weekend, the Derby being the second leg of the Triple Crown this year (<strong>Belmont<\/strong> ran June 20<sup>th<\/sup>), as well as competing programming (i.e., college football, U.S. Open Tennis, NBA playoffs, etc.).&#8221; However you slice it, CHDN predicted that Coronavirus would be no big thing for the race, a forecast that came up short by several furlongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"920\" height=\"518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Resorts_World_Las_Vegas_rendering.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Resorts_World_Las_Vegas_rendering.jpg 920w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Resorts_World_Las_Vegas_rendering-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Resorts_World_Las_Vegas_rendering-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Resorts_World_Las_Vegas_rendering-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Optimism is in shorter supply at <strong>Maybank<\/strong>, which wrote down its expectations for <strong>Resorts World Las Vegas<\/strong>, attributing &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asgam.com\/index.php\/2020\/09\/03\/maybank-turns-cautious-on-gentings-resorts-world-las-vegas-hopes\/\" class=\"broken_link\">nil value<\/a>&#8221; to the project and lowering <strong>Genting Berhad<\/strong> from &#8220;Buy&#8221; to &#8220;Hold.&#8221; Maybank&#8217;s gloom was not attributable to the project&#8217;s staggering cost ($4.3 billion), <strong>Resorts World<\/strong>&#8216;s dearth of brand equity in the U.S. or the challenge of duking it out with entrenched megaresorts (in more attractive locations) for high rollers. No, \u201cThe <strong>United States<\/strong> is now the country worst hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. If the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States does not stabilize by the time RWLV opens in the summer of 2021, we fear that it will generate losses.\u201d Even should the health picture improve, Resorts World LV is a long-term play. Novelty factor aside, we don&#8217;t see it making immediate inroads on the likes of <strong>Wynncore<\/strong> and <strong>Venelazzo<\/strong>. That said, we like its prospects much better than vaporware like <strong>The Drew<\/strong>. The picture for Genting isn&#8217;t much brighter in <strong>Singapore<\/strong>, where Maybank \u201cdoes not expect [<strong>Resorts World Sentosa<\/strong>] to breakeven in the near future on lack of international gamblers and social distancing requirements.&#8221; With the exception of <strong>Resorts World New York City<\/strong>, it&#8217;s an uphill slog for all of Genting&#8217;s major casinos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Are you puzzled by anemic long-haul tourism to <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>? <em>Global Gaming Business<\/em> has one of the answers. The problem, it seems, isn&#8217;t so much the getting in as what happens when you go home again: quarantine. There&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/nevada-target-of-travel-restrictions-from-17-states-and-d-c\/\">mind-blurring myriad of policies<\/a> depending on your state of origin but the bottom line tends to come out the same\u2014go to Vegas, shelter in place for a fortnight upon your return. That&#8217;s unlikely to change so long as <strong>Nevada<\/strong> is the Typhoid Mary of <strong>Covid-19<\/strong>. Nevada&#8217;s positivity rate is 15%, three times higher than what is considered a &#8220;flattening curve.&#8221; Heck, <strong>Maryland<\/strong> won&#8217;t even let you go <em>to<\/em> Sin City if you test positive. (&#8220;What happens there never gets here.&#8221;) In some states, the quarantine-upon-return mandate is merely suggested, not mandatory. Nonetheless it sends a chilling message about the near future of Silver State tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"986\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Guitar-Building.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Guitar-Building.jpg 986w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Guitar-Building-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Guitar-Building-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Guitar-Building-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 986px) 100vw, 986px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><strong>Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood<\/strong> seemingly had it all: a dazzling, state-of-the-art facility, eye-catching architecture and a <strong>Super Bowl<\/strong> rollout featuring <strong>Jennifer Lopez<\/strong> and <strong>Alex Rodriguez<\/strong>. But there&#8217;s one enemy it can&#8217;t beat: <strong>Coronavirus<\/strong>. The resort just laid off 1,527 people, blaming it on the pandemic. &#8220;If things stay the same, the notification said, the layoffs could become permanent,&#8221; reported the <em>Miami Herald<\/em>. One of the key problems is that the resort&#8217;s concert hall remains closed, idling many employees. Among the downsized are 265 dealers, 100 bartenders and 80 greeters. Seminole Hard Rock hopes to hire back many of the unlucky 1,500 soon but this illustrates the tough choices being made by casinos across the country. On the plus side, the affected workers are still receiving health insurance through the end of the month. The Seminoles are but one casualty of a leisure industry that&#8217;s four million jobs down from this time last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"wp-image-15124\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/NFL.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/NFL.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/NFL-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Speaking of the Super Bowl, it may have a distinct feeling of <em>d\u00e9ja vu<\/em> this season &#8230; if <strong>TheLines.com<\/strong> is correct. Aggregating odds from <strong>FanDuel<\/strong>, <strong>DraftKings<\/strong>, <strong>PointsBet<\/strong>, <strong>SugarHouse<\/strong> and <strong>Bet MGM<\/strong>, it favors the <strong>Kansas City Chiefs<\/strong> to repeat as world champions. If they win, a $100 bet yields a $600 payout. Books also like the <strong>Baltimore Ravens<\/strong> (+650 compared to Kansas City&#8217;s +600). In the <strong>NFC<\/strong> the pickings must be pretty slim, with the <strong>San Francisco 49ers<\/strong> overwhelmingly favored (+900) to punch their tickets for a return to &#8220;the Big Game&#8221; (blech!). Long-suffering New Yorkers and players who favor lengthy odds can pick the <strong>New York Jets<\/strong> (+8,500) or <strong>New York Giants<\/strong> (+8,400), while the <strong>Las Vegas Raiders<\/strong> check in at +6,700 (at least their opening game, at talent-depleted <strong>Charlotte<\/strong>, is all but a gimme\u2014TheLines.com has the Raiders three-point favorites). Leaving out teams that don&#8217;t play in jurisdictions where sports betting is legal, the closest runner-up are the <strong>Philadelphia Eagles<\/strong> at +2,100. No mention is made of the <strong>Washington Football Team<\/strong>. Is it that hopeless?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> has replaced the Koch Brother(s) as the favorite fundraising bogeyman of the Left. He and <strong>Home Depot<\/strong> co-founder <strong>Bernie Marcus<\/strong> have been outed by the <strong>League of Conservation Voters<\/strong> as being the moneybags behind a $30 million ad buy in swing states <strong>Florida<\/strong>, <strong>North Carolina<\/strong>, <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>, <strong>Wisconsin<\/strong>, <strong>Arizona<\/strong>, <strong>Iowa<\/strong>, and <strong>Georgia<\/strong>.
