If you put your money on a Donald Trump<\/strong> upset special, you might still cash in big. Bloomberg<\/em> reports that the Biden-Harris campaign is blowing it<\/a> in battleground states like Pennsylvania<\/strong> and Florida<\/strong>. The short version is that black and Latino voters are staying home in droves, little has been done in the form of old-fashioned retail politics and the Biden team is relying on the discredited Hillary Clinton<\/strong> playbook. Hopefully vote-counting will be relatively swift and we’ll be put out of our uncertainty in 48 hours or so. (Axios<\/em> reports that Trump plans to declare victory regardless of the ultimate outcome.) If you’ve been inundated with pro-GOP campaign commercials, you can thank Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>, who is richer than God. It must be nice to be able to simply buy a government<\/a> of your own choosing, right Shel? We’d all do it if we had that kind of di\u00f1ero<\/em>. ($32 billion net worth.) As Center for Responsive Politics<\/strong> director Sheila Krumholz<\/strong> told the Guardian<\/em>, \u201cSomehow, promises to change the culture in Washington<\/strong> or \u2018drain the swamp\u2019 fade away when the usual mega-donors line up to throw millions at the election. It\u2019s a seasonal amnesia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

One of the more unwittingly ironic Adelson-backed ads claims that Joe Biden<\/strong>, 77, is too old to run the country. That’s pretty rich coming from Sheldon, a veritable Methusaleh<\/strong> at 87. Other Adelson-backed PAC ads sport his characteristic bitterness, including some racist dog whistles, like “Jobs vs. Mobs” (whites against blacks) or one in which two clueless suburban housewives ask, “What do you know about Jaime Harrison<\/strong>?” (“He’s black” is the subtext. Can’t trust those negroes.) Actually this is pretty mild coming from a man who once called for genocide<\/a> against Iran<\/strong>. In addition to Trump, Adelson is spending large on behalf of senatorial shill Lindsey Graham<\/strong> (R), Sheldon’s one reliable puppet against Internet gambling. (Uh, that horse has left the barn, Shel.) Other Adelson-backed PACs are the Senate Leadership Fund<\/strong> ($50 million) and the House Leadership Fund<\/strong> ($40 million), as well as various dark-money groups. Adelson’s $250 million election putsch, er, push dwarfs even that of Michael Bloomberg ($107 million). We never thought we’d live to see the day when Sheldon Adelson was making common cause with neo-Nazis but this election cycle has taken us irretrievably through the looking glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adelson’s local archnemesis, meanwhile, the Culinary Union<\/strong>, is pulling out all the stops for Biden after infamously sitting on the fence during the Nevada<\/strong> primary. (Bernie Sanders<\/strong> cleaned up.) The Culinary has been deploying 400 door-to-door activists<\/a> since Aug. 1. Now that’s what we call “retail politics.” When the Culinary masses its troops, “Everyone has their temperature taken before they enter, and no one has to be asked to wear a mask.” Good on them. And if there’s one unifying issue, it’s Coronavirus<\/strong>. Flamingo<\/strong> cocktail server Aretha Wilder<\/strong> says of her aunt, \u201cShe was on a ventilator for three weeks. She\u2019s paralyzed on her left side, so it\u2019s personal to me. This election is personal to me.\u201d The union says it has knocked on 450,000 doors so far and it won’t let up canvassing, not even on Election Day. Culinary Secretary-Treasurer Geocond<\/strong>a Arg\u00fcello-Kline<\/strong> says it’s a high stakes gambit: \u201cDonald Trump is a threat to the livelihoods of workers and our families.\u201d Can the Culinary keep Nevada ‘blue’? After its primary-election stumble it has a lot to prove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casinos owned by Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> seem to have picked up on the Trump administration’s “Covid? Who cares?” mantra. One of our reliable sources reports that Caesars Atlantic City<\/strong>, Harrah’s Resort<\/strong> and the Tropicana<\/strong> all now eschew thermal checks of incoming guests. For the record, “Golden Nugget<\/strong> has checkpoints at the entrance from the self-park garage, from the building across the street where Chart House<\/strong> is located, and the main front entrance. Ocean<\/strong> [Casino Resort<\/strong>] has checkpoints at the Boardwalk entrance, the entrance to the hotel on the 11th floor and the two entrances to the casinos from the self-park garage.” Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong> has them at its two main entrances, Hard Rock Atlantic City<\/strong> at the main entry, the Boardwalk one and at the self-park garage, while Borgata<\/strong> deploys temperature scanners at the main entrance, the Water Club<\/strong> one and (again) the self-parking garage.
