Covid-19<\/strong> has claimed its first Cirque du Soleil<\/strong> casualty. Zumanity<\/em> has gone permanently dark at New York-New York.<\/strong> We’ll miss the sexually charged show, which logged 7,700 performances in 17 (!) years. “We\u2019re grateful to the cast, crew and team at Cirque\u00a0<\/em>for having created something very special.\u00a0 We look forward to sharing plans for new entertainment programming at the New York-New York Theater in the months ahead,\u201d said MGM Resorts International<\/strong> entertainment prexy George Kliavkoff<\/strong>. Given Coronavirus<\/strong> attendance restrictions, MGM will have plenty of time to mull its next offering. Zumanity<\/em> seems to have been sacrificed to save Cirque’s five other Vegas shows. Not only has Phil Ruffin<\/strong> re-upped Mystere<\/em> (and hopes for another Cirque spectacle at Circus Circus<\/strong>) but MGM has extended O<\/em>, Love<\/em>, Ka<\/em> and Michael Jackson<\/em> One<\/em> for an unspecified number of years. There is still no timeline for reopening any of the spectaculars and, given the mandate of only 250 attendees per show, it just doesn’t make any sense now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MGM suffered another blow on the entertainment front when David Copperfield<\/strong>‘s magic show had to be suspended<\/a> indefinitely. The illusionist is fine but a member of his stage crew tested positive for Covid-19. The return of Copperfield was one of the few bright spots along the Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>, which just can’t catch a break. Copperfield promises to return ‘as soon as possible.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Derek Stevens<\/strong> is flying customers in the friendly skies again. The D<\/strong> has teamed with Spirit Airlines<\/strong> to hold a contest. The objective: Win a one-way flight to Las Vegas<\/strong>, leaving Orange County<\/strong> at 7 a.m. tomorrow. “Be one of the first 150 people to reserve your seat and fly free on Spirit Airlines, receive a special swag bag, discounted room rates here at #theD and plenty of in-flight fun,” The D tweeted. It’s a very short hop from behind the Orange Curtain to Sin City, so we don’t know how much in-flight revelry is possible … but hey, freebies are never to be sneezed at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of sneezing, the exponential resurgence of Coronavirus threatens a positive trend outlined by the American Gaming Association<\/strong>. Third-quarter revenues reached 81% of pre-pandemic levels<\/a>. Slot sufferings (-19%) and table game debility (-31%) were offset by humongous gains in sports betting (47%) and Internet gambling (232.5%). That’s $9 billion over all and 294% from a near-nonexistent second quarter. Cautioned AGA President Bill Miller<\/strong>, “There is a long road ahead, especially as state and local officials introduce reclosures and restrictions, making urgent Congressional action on additional COVID-19 relief even more crucial. The AGA continues to advocate for a package that aids employee retention and rehiring, provides liability protections for responsible operators, supports tribal nations, and jumpstarts the travel and tourism industry.” He also warned of a far-worse-than-average lag in gaming’s performance (-35%) per the GDP. Miller has clearly not booked passage on the LSD trip that Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> CEO Tom Reeg<\/strong> has been taking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

94% of U.S. casinos are presently open and Ohio<\/strong> continues to be the coffee achiever, up 7.5% on average. Dimmer receipts from the tables were offset by slot gains in Arkansas<\/strong> (1%), Mississippi<\/strong> (3%) and South Dakota<\/strong> (7.5%). Slots and tables tumbled 18.5% in Pennsylvania<\/strong> but the introduction of Internet play (+1,898%) and the continuance of sports betting (73.5%) lifted the Keystone State 4%. Nationwide sports betting handle was $6 billion, translating into $352 million of revenue. Internet play continues its jailbreak, generating $435 million (excluding Nevada) although the growth rate slowed as terrestrial play\u201497% of overall revenue\u2014came back into business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
