In Las Vegas<\/strong> over Christmas with nothing to do? Try playing the Megabucks<\/em> slot machines at Suncoast<\/strong>. As Kevin only put $40 into the International Game Technology<\/strong> machine, he got a fantastic return on investment. Since Megabucks<\/em> is a revenue-sharing machine, Boyd Gaming<\/strong> isn’t on the hook for the entire jackpot … and to think that casinos actually petitioned the Nevada<\/strong> Lege in 1999 to outlaw revenue-sharing slots (an unfair restraint of trade, it was determined). Kevin, a snowbird from Alaska<\/strong>, told Boyd that he intends to “pay it forward” with his newfound wealth and support his business. He sounds like a good man. Nevada has not seen such a large jackpot since 2012, although it’s not a patch on the $34.9 million won at the Desert Inn<\/strong> in 2000 or the $39.7 million achieved at low-roller joint Excalibur<\/strong> in 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

After years of inscrutability, the government of Japan<\/strong> has finally said at least some of what it wants from casino mega resorts but, according to Global Gaming Business<\/em>, “may not have the political time or muscle to accomplish it.” Could this be the grand fizzle of Shinzo Abe<\/strong>‘s glacial progress toward casino gaming? His successor, Yoshihide Suga<\/strong>, seems more focused on reaching the arbitrary goal of 60 million tourists by 2030 (as Japan continues to put all its eggs in the tourism basket) rather than standing up a viable casino industry. The government has chosen to lead<\/a> with health-and-safety protocols, of all things. And Suga, who faces reelection in three months, could be long gone by the time the RFP phase crawls over the finish line in April 2022. Some analysts continue to blow sunshine up the industry’s ass by predicting that Nippon will be bigger than Macao<\/strong> but we stopped believing that a long time ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawaii<\/strong> remains off-limits to casinos but politicians are proposing one for Kapolei<\/strong>. Opposition in the Lege is predicted to be “stiff.” We’ve not heard anything on the subject since the Linda Lingle<\/strong> administration, when the daffy proposal was made for a one-year ‘experimental’ casino, an idea quickly forgotten.
